 HOW TO PRONOUNCE "A AND
AN"
• Perhatikan huruf awal dari kata bendanya.
• Jika kata bendanya diawali terdengar seperti huruf vokal (a, e, i, o, u),
maka kita menggunakan “an”, seperti “an apple”.
• Sedangkan jika kata bendanya diawali huruf konsonan, kita
menggunakan “a”, seperti “a bicycle”.
• Akan tetapi, huruf “u” pada “university” tidak dibaca layaknya huruf
“u”, melainkan “yu”. Contoh lain adalah “a uniform” dan “a euphoria”.
Ada pula kata yang diawali huruf konsonan tapi diawali dengan “an”
karena huruf konsonan tersebut tidak terbaca, dan yang terbaca atau
terdengar adalah huruf vokal di belakangnya. Contohnya “an hour”.
Huruf “h” di kata “hour” tidak dibaca, maka dari itu kita menggunakan
“an”. Contoh lainnya yaitu “an honor”.

pengucapan "the" ada dua cara tergantung apakah suara yang
muncul setelah the itu vokal atau konsonan. Ketika yang muncul
adalah huruf vokal, maka huruf “e” di “the” dibaca seperti huruf “i”,
sedangkan ketika huruf konsonan yang muncul maka terdengar
seperti “e” biasa. "the apartment" "the group" "the country"
