Tentang Penulis
Dari Wartawan ke Novelis, Dari Sumatera ke Amerika

Ahmad Fuadi lahir di Bayur, kampung kecil di pinggir Danau Maninjau tahun 1972, tidak
jauh dari kampung Buya Hamka. Fuadi merantau ke Jawa, mematuhi permintaan ibunya
untuk masuk sekolah agama. Di Pondok Modern Gontor dia bertemu dengan kiai dan ustad
yang diberkahi keikhlasan mengajarkan ilmu hidup dan ilmu akhirat. Gontor pula yang
mengajarkan kepadanya mantera sederhana yang sangat kuat, man jadda wajada, siapa
yang bersungguh sungguh akan sukses.

Lulus kuliah Hubungan Internasional, UNPAD, dia menjadi wartawan Majalah Tempo. Kelas
jurnalistik pertamanya dijalani dalam tugas-tugas reportase di bawah bimbingan para
wartawan senior Tempo. Tahun 1999, dia mendapat beasiswa Fulbright untuk kuliah S-2 di
School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University, USA. Merantau ke
Washington DC bersama Yayi, istrinyayang juga wartawan Tempoadalah mimpi masa

kecilnya yang menjadi kenyataan. Sambil kuliah, mereka menjadi koresponden TEMPO dan
wartawan Voice of America (VOA). Berita bersejarah seperti tragedi 11 September
dilaporkan mereka berdua langsung dari Pentagon, White House dan Capitol Hill.

Tahun 2004, jendela dunia lain terbuka lagi ketika dia mendapatkan beasiswa Chevening
Award untuk belajar di Royal Holloway, University of London untuk bidang film
dokumenter. Seorang scholarship hunter, Fuadi selalu bersemangat melanjutkan sekolah
dengan mencari beasiswa. Sampai sekarang, Fuadi telah mendapatkan 10 beasiswa untuk
belajar di luar negeri. Dia telah mendapat kesempatan tinggal dan belajar di Kanada,
Singapura, Amerika Serikat, Italia dan Inggris.

Novel pertamanya, Negeri 5 Menara telah diangkat ke layar lebar tahun 2011 dan buku ini
mendapatkan beberapa penghargaan: Nominasi Khatulistiwa Award 2010 dan Penulis dan
Buku Fiksi Terfavorit 2010 versi Anugerah Pembaca Indonesia, sedangkan tahun 2011,
Fuadi dianugerahi Liputan6 Award, SCTV untuk kategori motivasi dan pendidikan, Penulis
Terbaik IKAPI dan Juara 1 Karya Fiksi Terbaik Perpusnas. Tahun 2012, Fuadi terpilih
sebagai resident di Bellagio Center, Italia dan tahun 2013 mendapat penghargaan dari
DJKHI Kemenhuham untuk kategori Karya Cipta Novel. Sedangkan tahun 2014, Fuadi
diundang sebagai artist-in-residence di University of California at Berkeley.

Fuadi telah diundang jadi pembicara di berbagai acara internasional seperti Frankfurt Book
Fair, Ubud Writers Festival, Singapore Writers Festival, Salihara Literary Biennale,
Makassar Writers Festival, Byron Bay Writers Festival serta Melbourne Writers Festival di
Australia.

Penyuka fotografi ini pernah menjadi Direktur Komunikasi The Nature Conservancy,
sebuah NGO konservasi internasional. Kini, Fuadi sibuk menulis, menjadi public speaker,
serta membangun yayasan sosial untuk membantu pendidikan anak usia dini yang kurang
mampu--Komunitas Menara.

1. Contoh Bidang Ilmu Pasti. MA in Bio Energy

Being a new researcher in environment sector that related to renewable energy technology is a
blessing granted to me. Since my interest in renewable energy has been occupied my mind when I
studied chemical engineering in .. . It is a reputable university in Indonesia which has
been known for the highly competitive selection and scientific environment.
I was one of the lucky people who could experience such a wonderful education process which
has built my character and knowledge. Moreover, getting a chance to be supervised by a famous national
bio-fuel expert in doing my thesis research on bio-avtur has strengthened my motivation in devoting
myself in bio-energy sector. In addition, I also had a chance to be a teaching assistant for Industrial
Wastewater Management subject that has built my interest in environment sector. More specifically
about biogas that I think is a most appropriate technology that integrates environment and renewable
energy sector.
These interests have brought me to my current job. Working at the present time for the
.. I generate a comprehensive picture about Indonesias environment problems and where
renewable energy could be a part of the solution. In my office, I am not only getting opportunity to apply
my knowledge I obtained in my study but also gaining new knowledge about how policies could be an
important factor to support the technology implementation. Being a researcher in a government research
institution who provides technology service for the society surely is a big achievement for me after my
graduation from university.
I reckon when I was in the first grade, being graduate from university without having experience
in student organization can bring about the imperfection for my student live. Furthermore, experience in
organization might build network, friendship, various feelings and problems that have to be dealt with. It
could prepare me properly in facing society when I graduated. Based on these thought, in the university I
involved myself in several organizations which attracted me most, for example community development
division of Student Executive Board. I even took active participation in voluntary activities for helping
earthquake victims occurred in Indonesia at 2009. I reckon that these extracurricular activities have
increased my awareness about society until now, although in managing all the activities properly, I didnt
get the perfect grades for several subjects. But, I had tried my best effort to accommodate all of my study
and organizations activities.
I am actually a hard worker, enthusiastic, and very motivated person. I am also an extrovert and
sanguine person, hence I like making friend, building new network, easily getting along with other people
and being involved in community activities.
When I was involved in biogas project in my office, for me it is an utterly remarkable chance
because I could not only utilize and deepen my knowledge in renewable energy and environment sector,
but also devote myself to give significant contribution for helping society in solving wastewater problems
and exploring the provision of biogas renewable energy. My experiences when I was involved in biogas
project for two years have strengthened my motivation to indulge myself in this role. Furthermore, I have
determined my goal to be a national biogas expert who could bring biogas technology to the society. This
is definitely the area in which I wish to devote my attentions to both in my academic career and my future
employment.
This intention could be achieved if I enable to provide myself with excellent postgraduate
education to improve my knowledge significantly. Moreover, I strongly motivate myself to continue
research activities in my own country after finishing my study.
Being nominated for the prestigious Scholarship has strongly encouraged me to be a part of the
wonderful education system in the US. Studying in the United States will bring me to a worldwide network
with the US excellent academic environment, and this will empower me with the excellent substantial
knowledge to achieve and realize my dream

2. Contoh Bidang ilmu sosial. MA in Media
I see myself as a journalist who has been through different facet of media, starting from print, TV, radio and
internet. Three years living in the US I can see that the next phase of media industry advancement is heavily
depending on visual media, especially moving image in TV and film. Choosing this field is to maximize my
skills in visual communication in order to anticipate this next phase of media industry trend. I believe that to
produce a better quality TV and film product, I need special training in this field. Moreover, as Indonesia TV
industry is flourishing, a professional trained individual in this field is highly in demand while only limited
number of people have this kind of expertise in Indonesia
The UKs advanced technology in the field will enhance my skills and knowledge and will complete my
media-related skills to start a new venture in a TV and film production. My acquired TV/visual
communication skills in the UK and my hand-on experiences in electronic and printed media will be my
valuable asset to start my own business in TV and film production.
As I am committed to start my own business, I will not seek for new job in Indonesias already high
unemployment situation after completion of my study in the UK. Instead I will provide more jobs for
more Indonesians by starting my own venture in TV and film production. I hope that my acquired skills in
the UK will help me in producing better quality TV programming and film for Indonesia audience.
Programs which are not only entertaining but also educating and opening new horizon for Indonesians

During my academic years and professional experiences, I have won many highly competitive schemes.
For example, I won 2 different international fellowships to Malaysia in 1997 and Australia in 1995. In 1999
I was awarded Ford Scholarship to pursue my education in Washington DC. In my professional life, I won
Media Fellowship in University of Maryland in 2002. These consistent good records resulted from
commitment, persistence and perseverance to whatever I do.
With these good track records I have bright future in Indonesian leadership and my further education in
the UK can be a good investment for the UK-Indonesia relationship

3. Bidang Sosial. Ditulis orang asing MA in Writing Studies

Through six years of teaching experience in the public schools, nothing has proved more challenging and
intriguing to me than the teaching of writing. My experience in writing instruction has led me to two
principal areas which I desire to research further in my graduate work: computers in the composing
process and writing across the curriculum. Over the past three years I have become especially interested
in the developing field of composing with computers. I have used my English classes as informal
laboratories to observe different stages of writing processes on computers. My current experimentation is
in the use of computers as tools for response and revision via a distance network. In my graduate study, I
would like to further explore the range of possibilities of computers and networks assisting in revision
processes. I am also interested in the design of computer writing centers and would like to study how
these environments both change our approaches and aid us in our writing tasks.

My second principal area of research interest is cross-curricular approaches to writing. My personal
academic interests have always been very eclectic; presently I would like to expand my knowledge of
composition modes to encompass the broad range of writing tasks which occur across the university
curriculum. Further, I would like to research how writing can be used as a tool for learning in diverse
subject domains. My current team teaching in Geography and English have reinforced my belief that there
is a tremendous amount of untapped potential in the area of writing to learn.

The literature from the University of Decatur impressed me with its value placed upon the teaching
experiences of its graduate students. Beyond my research goals, I hope that my continued teaching during
graduate study will build and expand my skills for university instruction. I first became interested in the
teaching of writing when tutoring Freshmen at the University of California for a remedial English course.
Their diverse problems and processes in composition fascinated me, as do those of my current students in
English 7 and 12 Honors. By teaching during the course of my studies, I look forward to broadening both
my teaching repertoire and my understanding of students' diverse points of development as writers.

When I have completed my Ph.D., I plan to seek employment in an English or rhetoric department as a
university composition instructor or coordinator of a university-wide writing program. I would like to work
in both instruction and in the development of new programs to help students to think (compose) more
effectively. Further, I plan to work in my research and development in frequent association with the
public schools so as to aid in the flow of discovery between their world and that of the university. Among
my most rewarding professional experiences over the past three years has been my frequent involvement
in the Mediterranean Area Writing Project as a presenter to teachers in various countries. To help
mediate between public schools and universities, I hope to maintain my involvement in the National
Writing Project, and my belief in its philosophy that no single organization or individual has a corner on
the very best ideas.
