Recount Text - Belajar bahasa Inggris pada kesempatan kali ini akan membahas mengenai
Recount Text. Mungkin banyak teman-teman yang masih bingung apa sih perbedaan antara
Recount Text dengan Narrative Text. Memang keduanya merupakan jenis teks Narration
(lihat: Jenis Teks Bahasa Inggris) yang merupakan jenis teks yang menceritakan cerita masa
lalu. Untuk tahu lebih jauh mengenai Recount Text, di bawah ini penulis hadirkan penjelasan
lengkap mengenai Recount Tex. Semoga bermanfaat. Check this out!!!

A. Pengertian Recount Text

Recount Text adalah salah satu dari jenis teks bahasa Inggris yang menceritakan kembali
kejadian-kejadian atau pengalaman-pengalaman di masa lampau. Tujuan dari Recount Text
adalah untuk memberikan informasi atau untuk menghibur pembaca. Di dalam Recount Text
tidak terdapat komplikasi (Complication) seperti halnya di Narrative Text.

B. Tujuan Komunikatif Teks Recount

Tujuan komunikatif Recount Text seperti penjelasan di atas adalah untuk melaporkan
peristiwa, kejadian atau kegiatan dengan tujuan memberitakan atau menghibur tentunya
tanpa ada konflik di dalam cerita tersebut.

C. Generic structure Teks Recount

1. Orientation
Orientation atau pengenalan yaitu memberikan informasi tentang siapa, di mana, dan kapan
peristiwa atau kegiatan itu terjadi di masa lampau.

2. Events
Events merupakan rekaman peristiwa yang terjadi, yang biasanya disampaikan dalam urutan
kronologis, seperti "In the first day, I ... . And in the next day ... . And In the last day ..." . Di
bagian Events ini juga biasanya terdapat komentar pribadi tentang peristiwa atau kejadian
yang diceritakan.

3. Reorientation
Pada bagian Reorientation, terdapat pengulangan pengenalan yang ada di Orientation,
pengulangan yang merangkum rentetan peristiwa, kejadian atau kegiatan yang diceritakan.

D. Ciri Kebahasaan Recount Text

Terdapat beberapa ciri-ciri kebahasaan yang mungkin akan teman-teman temukan ketika
membaca sebuah Recount Text. Ciri-ciri kebahasaan dari Recount Text tersebut adalah:

 Menggunakan Past Tense. Misalkan we went to zoo, I was happy, etc.

 Menggunakan Conjunction dan Time Connectives untuk mengurutkan peristiwa atau
kejadian. Misalnya and, but, the, aftar that, etc.
  Menggunakan Adverbs dan Adverbial Phrase untuk mengungkapkan tempat, waktu
dan cara. Misalkan yesterday, at my house, slowly, etc.
 Menggunakan Action Verbs. Misalkan went, slept, run, brought, etc.

E. Contoh Recount Text

Contoh 1
Our trip to the Blue Mountain

Orientation

On Friday we went to the Blue Mountains. We stayed at David and Della’s house.
It has a big garden with lots of colourful flowers and a tennis court.

Events

On Saturday we saw the Three Sisters and went on the scenic railway. It was
scary. Then, Mummy and I went shopping with Della. We went to some antique
shops and I tried on some old hats. On Sunday we went on the Scenic Skyway
and it rocked. We saw cockatoos having a shower.

Reorientation
In the afternoon we went home. That was very pleasent moment with my family
that I ever got.

Contoh 2

My Best Friend, Haruka

In Senior high school, I had best friend from Korea. Her name was Haruka. She
was beautiful, smart, and low profile. For that many people loved her, included
of me myself. It was because, even though she was from foreign country that
considered by many students would be arrogant with students in my school, but
Haruka was different. She was a good girl.

I and Haruka became good friend each other. I was really glad in having friend
like her. It was because even though she was from rich family and I was not
from rich family. She wanted to have a friend like me. She wanted to share
everything to me. So, did I. For the example, when she had something, like
knowledge, foods, or even gift, she would give to me. Then, I did the same thing
like her, for the example if my mom made a food, traditional food, I would give
that food also to Haruka.

One day, I was invited by Haruka’s family to attend Haruka’s birth day. I came
to Haruka’s house as shown in invitation card. I was very surprised when I
looked the house of Haruka that was very luxurious, and beautiful. I felt afraid
to enter Haruka’s house. For that, I only waited on the outside of Haruka’s
house. I stood at fence. Then, seven minutes, I stood at fence. I saw Haruka
went to out from her house. She came to me and she asked why I did not enter.
I did not answer, I only smiled. Then, she said to me that her birthday would not
be started without the existence of me. I was very touched in hearing that. I
hugged her. Then, I and Haruka entered to Haruka’s house. Many guests looked
at me and Haruka. Then, the party started. Before that, Haruka’s parents
introduced me to the guests that I was the best friend for her daughter and
Haruka’s family wanted me follow them to holiday in Korea next month. Many
people gave applause to me and Haruka’s family. I was so touched. I felt to cry.

I was fortunate having friend like Haruka, and knew Haruka’s family.

Contoh 3

Pangandaran Beach

The tour to Pangandaran Beach started on holiday last semester. We decided

to go to Pangandaran Beach by our motorbike. That was very interesting tour.
Riding a motorbike from my hometown, Cirebon, to Pangandaran Beach with my
best friends made me feel exited.
The tour to Pangandaran Beach began at 09.00 a.m. in the morning and it took
5 hours riding to Pangandaran Beach. There were so many story that my friends
and I got when we were in the tour such as there was my friend who got lost,
ran out of fuel in the middle of jungle, and so forth. But it was interesting,
because it was the first moment that I ever had in touring.
We arrived at Pangandaran Beach at 02.00 p.m. and we stright to move to the
beach. At beach we just lied down there to stretch our muscle because of 5
hours riding. We also had a lunch there by eating some foods that we brought
from Cirebon. That was very nice moment when we shared our own food to
others.
After we had enough rest, we began to explore Pangandaran Beach. Started
by exploring the beach, and the sea using rented boat. Then we went to dive by
renting some diving equipment. We could see many coral there. We just had 2
hours to enjoy Pangandaran Beach because we had to come back to Cirebon.
We came back to Cirebon at 04.00 p.m. It was imposible to ride in the night,
so we just decided to stay over in our friend house in Ciamis and we started to
come back in the morning. That was very nice experience that I and my friends
ever had. We would never forget that moment.

Contoh 4

My First Experience to Ride Motorcycle

One day, when I was ten years old, my father bought an old motorcycle. That
was " Honda 75". I think it was small light object and easy to ride it. I
persuaded my father to teach me to ride " Honda 75 ". Firstly, my father
refused my request and promised that he would teach me two or three years
later, but I still whimpered. Finally, my father surrendered and promised to
teach me.

He began to teach me riding the motorcycle around a field in my village. My

father was very patient to give me some directions. I was very happy when I
realized my ability to ride a motorcycle. " Yes, I can ".

One day later, when I was alone at home, I intended to try my riding ability. So,
myself tried bravely. All ran fluently in the beginning, but when I was going back
to my home and I must passed through a narrow slippery street, I got nervous. I
lost my control and I fell to the ditch.

After that, I told my father about the last accident. I imagined my father
would be angry and never let me ride again. But the reality is exactly on the
contrary, my father was very proud of me. He just gave me some advices and
since that accident, I got my father's permission to ride motorcycle.

Contoh 5

5 Serangkai

When I am sitting under mango tree alone, I remembered my good friends a

long time ago. They were Tuti, Pipit, Nurul, and Siska. At the time, they were a
friend who really loyal with their own friends. It could be known from their
actions every day. For the example, we went to school, backed to school, played,
and studied always together. Even though, we were not in the same class(e.g. I ,
Tuti, and pipit were on one class and Nurul and Siska were different class with
us), but we were so chummy. Even, many my other friends called us as “5
Serangkai”
At the time, I and my friends went to school at 6 o’clock in every day. It was
caused by the distance between I and my friends to the school was so far. In
addition, I and my friends might across river, might go around the forest to go
the school. Nevertheless, I and friends did not feel tired to do that. We were
very spirit full every day. If there was one of us did not meet one day. We
would search our friend until we met her.

One day, after I and my friends backed to school, at 13.00 o’clock. We planned
to study together in Tuti’s home especially under Tuti’s mango tree which was
very calm, and cool. In addition, under Tuti’s mango tree was prepared some
benches. So that, it made all people felt enjoy when staying on this place.

At 13.30 o’clock all members of 5 Serangkai completed. I, Tuti, Pipit, Nurul, and
Siska came on time. We never would be late, except there was obstacle that
disturbed us. At 13. 45, we started to study to discuss each other about the
answer of our homework. Nevertheless, when we did not finish yet in answering
our homework, there was event which happened to Tuti. Tuti had fallen to the
ground from the bench that she sat. I, Pipit, Nurul and Siska were very shocked
about it. Then, we all tried to make Tuti became conscious by giving the first
aid. Nevertheless, God had another plan, Tuti backed to God. Tuti Died. We all
were very sad.

B. NARRATIVE

NARRATIVE TEXT - Semua orang pasti sudah tahu atau paling tidak pernah mendengar
kata Narrative sebelumnya. Narrative merupkan jenis teks bahasa inggris yang sering
muncul dan di ajarkan pada tingkat pendidikan SMP atau SMP. Tapi apa sih sebenarnya
Narrative itu?

A. PENGERTIAN NARRATIVE TEXT

Narrative Text adalah satu dari 13 jenis teks bahasa inggris (genre) yang lahir dari
kalangan Narration (lihat Types Of Text) seperti halnya Recount Text dan News Items
Text yang mana berfungsi untuk menceritakan kisah masa lampau dan untuk hiburan.

B. TUJUAN KOMUNIKATIF NARRATIVE TEXT

Tujuan Komunikatif Narrative Text seperti yang dijelaskan di atas adalah untuk
menghibur pendengar atau pembaca tentang suatu kisah atau cerita masa lampau yang
bertalian dengan pengalaman nyata, khayal atau peristiwa-peristiwa pelik yang
mengarah ke suatu krisis, yang pada akhirnya menemukan suatu penyelesaian.

C. GENERIC STRUCTURE OF NARRATIVE TEXT- (Struktur Teks Narrative)

Setiap jenis teks bahasa Inggris (genre) memiliki struktur teksnya sendiri-sendiri.
Struktur dari Narrative Text terdiri dari tiga bagian yaitu :

1. Orientation
Pada bagian Orientation atau pengenalan berisi tentang pengenalan tokoh dalam cerita
serta waktu dan tempat kejadiannya.

2. Complication
Pada bagian Complication berisi tentang gambaran munculnya krisis atau masalah yang
di alami oleh tokoh pada cerita tersebut yang harus dipecahkan.

3. Resolution
Pada bagian Resolution berisi tentang bagaiman tokoh dari cerita tersebut memecahkan
masalah yang ada pada bagian Complication.

Pada beberapa referensi tentang Narrative Text, terdapat tambahan generic structure
pada Narrative Text, yaitu penambahan Coda setelah Resoultion. Jadi susunan Narrative
text adalah Orientiation, Complication, Resolution dan Coda.

Coda adalah bagian terakhir dari structure Narrative Text yang berisi perubahan yang
terjadi pada tokoh dan pelajaran yang dapat dipetik dari cerita tersebut.

D. LANGUAGE FEATURE OF NARRATIVE TEXT - Ciri Kebahasan Narrative Text

Pada Narrative Text, terdapat beberapa ciri-ciri antara lain sebagai berikut :
 Mengunakan Action Verb dalam bentuk Past Tense (Verb II). Misalnya : Climbed,
Turned, Brought, dsb.
 Menggunakan Nouns tertentu sebagai kata ganti orang, hewan dan benda tertentu
dalam cerita. Misalnya : the king, the queen, dsb.
 Menggunakan Adjectives yang membentuk noun phrase. Misalnya : long black hair,
two red apples, dsb.
 Menggunakan Time Connectives dan Conjunctions untuk mengurutkan kejadian-
kejadian. Misalnya : then, before, after, soon, dsb.
 Menggunakan Adverbs dan Adverbial Phrase untuk menunjukkan lokasi kejadian
atau peristiwa. Misalnya : here, in the mountain, happily ever after, dsb.
 E. Contoh teks Narrative

Contoh 1
Snow White
(Putri Salju)

Orientation
Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. She lived
with her Aunt and Uncle because her parents were dead.

Complication 1
One day she heard her Uncle and Aunt talking about leaving Snow White
in the castle because they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t
have enough money to take Snow White.

Resolution
Snow White did not want her Uncle and Aunt to do this so she decided it
would be best if she ran away. The next morning she ran away from home
when her Aunt and Uncle were having breakfast. She ran away into the
woods.

Then she saw this little cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she
went inside and fell asleep.

Resolution
Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They went
inside. There they found Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up.
She saw the dwarfs. The dwarfs said, “what is your name?” Snow White
said, “My name is Snow White.”

Doc, one of the dwarfs, said, “If you wish, you may live here with us.”
Snow White said, “Oh could I? Thank you.” Then Snow White told the
dwarfs the whole story and Snow White and the 7 dwarfs lived happily
ever after.

Contoh 2

The Story of Toba Lake

Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a
simple hut in a farming field. The did some gardening and fishing for his daily
life.

One day, while the man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It
was the biggest catch which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish
turned into a beautiful princess. He felt in love with her and proposed her to be
his wife. She said; “Yes, but you have to promise not to tell anyone about the
secret that I was once a fish, otherwise there will be a huge disaster”. The man
made the deal and they got married, lived happily and had a daughter.

Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the
fields. One day, his daughter was so hungry and she ate his father’s lunch.
Unfortunately, he found out and got furious, and shouted; “You damned
daughter of a fish”. The daughter ran home and asked her mother. The mother
started crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his promise.

Then she told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was
about to come. When her daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big
earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain.

The whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake. She turned into a fish again
and the man became the island of Samosir.

Contoh 3

Romeo and Juliet

In the town of Verona there lived two families, the Capulets and the Montagues.
They engaged in a bitter feud. Among the Montagues was Romeo, a hot-blooded
young man with an eye for the ladies. One day, Romeo attended the feast of the
Capulets’, a costume party where he expected to meet his love, Rosaline, a
haughty beauty from a well-to-do family. Once there, however, Romeo’s eyes
felt upon Juliet, and he thought of Rosaline no more.

The vision of Juliet had been invading his every thought. Unable to sleep, Romeo
returned late that night to the Juliet’s bedroom window. There, he was
surprised to find Juliet on the balcony, professing her love for him and wishing
that he were not a “Montague”, a name behind his own. “What’s in a name? That
which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Romeo was ready
to deny his name and professed his love. The two agreed to meet at nine o-clock
the next morning to be married.
Early the next morning, Romeo came to Friar Lawrence begging the friar to
marry him to Juliet. The Friar performed the ceremony, praying that the union
might someday put an end to the feud between the two families. He advised
Romeo kept the marriage a secret for a time.

On the way home, Romeo chanced upon his friend Mercutio arguing with Tybalt,
a member of the Capulet clan. That quarreling last caused Merquito died. Romeo
was reluctant no longer. He drew his sword and slew Tybalt died. Romeo realized
he had made a terrible mistake. Then Friar Lawrence advised Romeo to travel to
Mantua until things cool down. He promised to inform Juliet.
In the other hand, Juliet’s father had decided the time for her to marry with
Paris. Juliet consulted Friar Lawrence and made a plot to take a sleeping potion
for Juliet which would simulate death for three days. The plot proceeded
according to the plan. Juliet was sleeping in death.

Unfortunately, The Friar’s letter failed to reach Romeo. Under the cover of
darkness, he broke into Juliet’s tomb. Romeo kissed the lips of his Juliet one
last time and drank the poison. Meanwhile, the effects of the sleeping potion
wear off. Juliet woke up calling for Romeo. She found her love next to her but
was lying dead, with a cup of poison in his hand. She tried to kiss the poison
from his lips, but failed. Then Juliet put out his dagger and plunged it into her
breast. She died

Contoh 4

Buffalo, Tiger, and Farmer as

Once there was a farmer from Laos. Every morning and every evening, he
ploughed his field with his buffalo.

One day, a tiger saw the farmer and his buffalo working in the field. The tiger
was very surprised to see a big animal listening to a small animal. The tiger
wanted to know more about the big animal and the small animal.

After the man went home, the tiger spoke to the buffalo; “you are so big and
strong. Why do you do everything the man tells you?” The buffalo answered;
“oh, the man is very intelligent”.
The tiger asked; “can you tell me how intelligent he is?”. “No, I can’t tell you”,
said the buffalo; “but you can ask him”
So the next day the tiger asked to the man; “Can I see your intelligence?”. But
the man answered; “it at home”. “Can you go and get it?” asked the tiger. “Yes”
said the man; “but I am afraid you will kill my buffalo when I am gone. Can I tie
you to a tree?”

After the man tied the tiger to the tree, he didn’t go home to get his
intelligence. He took his plough and hit the tiger. Then he said; “Now you know
about my intelligence even you haven’t seen it.

Contoh 5

Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih

Bawang Putih lived with her step mother and her step sister, Bawang Merah.
Bawang Putih’s mother died when she was a baby. Her father remarried another
woman and later her step sister was born. Unfortunately, not long after that
her father died. Since then, Bawang Putih’s life was sad. Her step mother and
her step sister treated Bawang Putih badly and always asked her to do all the
household chores.

One morning, Bawang Putih was washing some clothes in a river. Accidentally,
her mother’s clothes were washed away by the river. She was really worried so
she walked along the river side to find the clothes. Finally she met an old
woman. She said that she kept the clothes and would give them back to Bawang
Putih if she helped the old woman do the household chores. Bawang Putih helped
her happily. After everything was finished, the old woman returned the clothes.
She also gave Bawang Putih a gift. The old woman had two pumpkins, one pumpkin
was small and the other one was big. Bawang Putih had to choose one.

Bawang Putih was not a greedy girl. So she took the small one. After thanking
the old woman, Bawang Putih then went home. When she arrived home, her step
mother and Bawang Merah were angry. They had been waiting for her all day
long. Bawang Putih then told about the clothes, the old woman, and the pumpkin.
Her mother was really angry so she grabbed the pumpkin and smashed it to the
floor. Suddenly they all were surprised. Inside the pumpkin they found
jewelries. “Bawang Merah, hurry up. Go to the river and throw my clothes into
the water. After that, find the old woman. Remember, you have to take the big
pumpkin,” the step mother asked Bawang Merah to do exactly the same as
Bawang Putih’s experience. Bawang Merah immediately went to the river. She
threw the clothes and pretended to search them. Not long after that, she met
the old woman. Again she asked Bawang Merah to do household chores. She
refused and asked the old woman to give her a big pumpkin. The old woman then
gave her the big one. Bawang Merah was so happy. She ran very fast. When she
arrived home, her mother was impatient. She directly smashed the pumpkin to
the floor. They were screaming. There were a lot of snakes inside the pumpkin!
They were really scared. They were afraid the snakes would bite them. “Mom, I
think God just punished us. We had done bad things to Bawang Putih. And God
didn’t like that. We have to apologize to Bawang Putih,” said Bawang Merah.

Finally both of them realized their mistakes. They apologized and Bawang Putih
forgave them. Now the family is not poor anymore. Bawang Putih decided to sell
all the jewelries and used the money for their daily lives.
