A dan AN

A dan AN disebut indefinite articles. “Indefinite” berarti “tidak spesifik”. A (AN) digunakan ketika kita
berbicara tentang suatu hal secara umum dan bukan suatu hal yang spesifik.
contoh:
 We need a car. Bukan sebuah mobil yang spesifik, bisa berupa mobil apa saja
 Maria wants a motorcycle. Bukan jenis motor tertentu, motor secara umum
 Do you have a driving license? Surat izin mengemudi apa saja. Bisa berupa SIM A, SIM B,
SIM C dll
A (AN) digunakan ketika berbicara tentang hal yang baru, tidak diketahui, atau diperkenalkan kepada
pendengar untuk pertama kalinya. Kita juga menggunakan A (AN) ketika kita bertanya tentang
keberadaan sesuatu.
contoh:
 I have a computer. Komputer ini diperkenalkan untuk pertama kalinya
 Tonny is a lecturer. Ini adalah informasi baru untuk pendengar
 Is there a key in your backpack? Bertanya tentang keberadaan kunci
Demikian pula, A (AN) digunakan untuk memperkenalkan apa jenis hal yang kita bicarakan.
contoh:
 This is an excellent room. Menggambarkan jenis ruangan
 Do you live in a tree house? Bertanya tentang jenis rumah
 She ate a huge, milky pudding. Menggambarkan jenis pudding
INGAT: Kita tidak dapat menggunakan A (AN) untuk kata benda jamak karena A (AN) berarti “satu”
atau “single”.

 I saw a rhinos in Ujung Kulon National Park. Salah
 I saw rhinos in Ujung Kulon National Park. Benar
THE
THE disebut definite article. “Pasti” atau “khusus”. THE digunakan ketika berbicara tentang sesuatu
yang sudah diketahui pendengar atau yang telah disebutkan, diperkenalkan, atau dibahas
sebelumnya.
contoh:
 Moly have a dog. The dog is black.
 There was a soft drink in my backpack. The soft drink is very sweet.
 Do you know where she left the helmet? Pendengar tahu persis helm yang Anda bicarakan.
 Do you own a bike? Is the bike red? Anda menganggap mereka memiliki motor setelah
bertanya tentang hal itu dalam kalimat pertama.
 Nobody lives on the Jupiter. Jupiter diketahui semua orang.
PENTING: THE dapat digunakan dalam kedua kata benda tunggal dan kata benda jamak.
