KELAS XI/SEMESTER GENAP KD 3.7/4.7

Ketuntasan Pembelajaran pada semester genap Tahun Pelajaran 2019/2020 sebentar lagi akan berakhir
dengan penentuan kenaikan kelas, mengingat ketertinggalan beberapa materi yang belum sempat diujikan kepada
peserta didik, maka sebagai guru mata pelajaran berusaha merangkum dan menyusun materi pembelajaran terkait
kompetensi dasar yang termuat dalam semester genap sesuai Kurikulum 2013.
Berharap agar peserta didik kelas XI IPA, IPS dan IPB dapat menyelesaikan Tugas Bahasa Inggris tersebut
secara mandiri di rumah dengan bantuan orang tua selama masa karantina, sebagaimana instruksi Pemerintah
dalam hal ini Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia untuk tetap bekerja dari rumah, belajar
dari rumah dan bahkan berdoa dari rumah, akibat dari Wabah Virus Korona atau Corona Virus diseases (Covid 19)
yang menyerang manusia tanpa memandang usia, latar belakang, status dan lain sebagainnya dan memiliki tingkat
transmisi yang sangat significant yang dihadapi Bangsa dan Negara kita sekarang.
Tugas Bahasa Inggris dapat dikerjakan pada lembaran ini, dan akan dikumpulkan pada hari Jumat, tanggal 1
Mei 2020 tepat pukul 09.00 WIT. Semua bentuk penilaian akan diakumulasi dan dijumlahkan untuk mendapatkan
nilai akhir pada raport sesuai kriteria yang ditentukan oleh Satuan Pendidikan. Demikian penjelasan saya terkait
tugas mandiri tersebut, dan Atas kerja sama yang baik (kepada orang tua dan peserta didik sendiri) saya ucapkan

Jane : Hi, Ray! What are you doing?
Ray : Hi, Jane! I am reading an article on smoking.
Jane : Smoking! Why?
Ray : For presentation in my Science class.
Jane : So what did you learn about smoking?
Ray : Did you know that smoking is one of the main causes of sickness in smokers? For example
smoking weakens the lungs due to which there is a build up of poisonous substances,
smoking causes heart attacks, strokes, ulcers
Jane : Really? It sounds scary.
Ray : It is! If we do not educate people about the effects of smoking, there will be a lot of people
suffering from these diseases.
Jane : You are right. We have to do it.

Read the following dialog. What is dialog about?
Bobby : Dad, I am hungry. Will we drop by a restaurant and have meals?
Mr.Andy : Sure. What food do you want to eat?
Bobby : Fast food.
Mr.Andy : What don’t we choose another food? Consuming too much fast food is not good for
our health.
Bobby : Really?
Mr.Andy : Yeah. It may cause several diseases.
Bobby : How can it be?
Mr.Andy : Fast food usually contains substances that stimulate people to eat continuously. In other
words, it is addictive.
Bobby : You are right, Dad. Tommy, my friend, addicts to fast food.
Mr.Andy : Such condition is not good for our health. Fast food contains high calories, high fat and
low fiber. If we eat it every day, it will increase our weight and may cause obesity. For
matters worse, it may lead to heart attacks.
Bobby : Are there other effects, Dad?
Mr.Andy : Yes. A study revealed that eating fast food from an early age declines the IQ
Bobby : Really?
Mr.Andy : Yup! It may also lead to Parkinson or Alzheimer’s diseases.
Bobby : WoW! We had better limit or even break the habit of consuming fast food.

Definition of Explanation Text

What is an explanation text?


 An explanation text is a non – fiction text that is used to describe how or why things happen. It
usually includes a sequence of events ( explaining how) and provides reasons for a process or
phenomenon (why). For example : 1) Corona’s Virus diseases (Covid 19), 2) Earthquake, 3) The
water cycle, 4) Rain, etc.
Type of Explanation Texts
 Explanation texts are categorized according to the type of process they describe. It is divided into
two categories such as 1) Sequential Explanation, 2) Cause and Effect Explanation
1. Sequential Explanation : Explanation that describe natural and non – natural phenomena, for
example life cycle.
2. Cause and Effect Explanation : Explanation text that links cause and effect in explaining how
and why an event occurred, for example volcanoes.
Social Function
 An explanation text is used to describe how or why a certain phenomenon happens.
General Structure
 A title that identifies the topic to be explained
 An opening statement that identifies the process to be explained
 A clear order of paragraphs that describe how and why
 A concluding paragraph that puts all the information together
 Finally, a visual text (a labeled image)
Language Features
 Focus on general group rather than specific.
 Use of liking words like in general, rather, for instance.
 Use of action verbs like breaks, erupts.
 Use of present tense like is, wake, are.
 Reference to people should not be given.
 Passive voice may be used.
 Use of technical terms and language relevant to the subject.
 Conjunctions should be used to make connections like and, but.
 Gives a detailed description to create a rich meaning.

Berdasarkan penjelasan materi teks explanation diatas, maka Anda diminta untuk menyusun sebuah teks
explanation dengan judul “The Spread of the corona’s virus diseases (covid 19) As a National Disaster”.
Teks disusun paling kurang 4 paragraf dalam Bahasa Indonesia kemudian diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa
Inggris.
