"Hi, Andi," they said.
"Hi, Irwan. Hello Mira. Come in. Sit down and look at my stamps. I have some new ones,"
said Andi. He showed his stamps to his cousins. "Oh," said Irwan. "You have some good ones.
How long have you collected them?"
"I've collected them since last year. My father's office receives letters from other towns,
and from other countries. So he often gives me stamps," said Andi.
"I like this one, Andi," said Mira, "It’s from India."
"Yes," said Andi. "Uncle Ahmad has given stamps to me. He's in New Delhi now. He has
been there for two years.
"Have you had stamps from Africa yet?" asked Irwan.
"No, I haven't had any yet. But I'd like to get some."
"I can give you some," said Irwan.
"Thanks, and I can give you some stamps from India," said Andi
"That's fine," said Irwan," Then we can trade some stamps."
The children talked about their stamps for a while Irwan and Mira went home at 5.30 p.m.

BOROBUDUR
The Borobudur temple, with its seven terraces and its stupas, is the world's largest
Buddhist temple. The Sailendra dynasty built Borobudur in the ninth century. Not long after that
people left the area but no one knows why they left. For the next 800 years people almost forgot
the temple because it was buried under earth and trees, this caused a lot of damage.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century,
first the British government, and then the Dutch
Government attempted to uncover the temple. They

lose it".
Later on, the Indonesian government also
made efforts to preserve the
temple. So several years ago they asked UNESCO to help restore it. Then helps
came from many countries.
In 1973 the restoration work began. A team of Indonesia and foreign

Farmer Gray was the kindest master in the world. He was proud of me, and called me Black
Beauty. I had a white spot on my forehead and one white foot. He trained me to pull a carriage.
Then I learn to wear a saddle and carry a rider on my back.
One day, Farmer Gray said. “A good horse like you does not live on a farm. So you will be
going to live with Squire Gordon and his family. “I was very sad to leave my mother and my

However, when I saw my masters I knew I would be happy with them. They lived in a big

4. LETTERS
Dear Nan,
We are having a great a holiday here on the Gold Coast. Yesterday we went to the Movie
World.
When we got up in the morning, it looked like rain. After a while the cloud disappeared. And it
became a sunny day. We then decided to go to the Movie World.
The first ride I went on was Lethal Weapon. Next I saw the Police Academy show. After that I
had lunch as I was really hungry. Meanwhile, Mum and Kelly queued for the Batman ride.
About one o’clock we got a light shower of rain but it cleared up soon after. We then went on
all the other rides.
It was a top day. See you when you get back.
Love,
Sam

Dear Wirtomo,
Thank you for your second letter. It is interesting to read about 'the farming tools used by
farmers in your village.
Unlike the farmers in your village, most farmers in my country use machines to help them
work. The machines are very useful since most farms are very big. They use tractors to plow the land.
Another machine is a seed drill; it makes holes in the ground, then it drops seeds into them, it may
even drop a smart amount of fertilizer with each seed. Farmers with very large farm sometimes use
planes to plant seed. They also use planes to spray chemical onto me rice fields. When harvest time
comes they lads use a machine called a 'combine' to cut the rice. It also separates the rice kernels
from the stalks. You know that a 'combine' can harvest more grain than 2000 people working by hand.
Well, that's alt for this time. I am looking forward to receiving another letter from you.
Yours sincerely,
Jimi Tognolini

Mr/Mrs. Smith

I am writing to share my enjoyable experience with you. I hope this letter will find you all well.
Yesterday Budi’s classmates and I went to visit five tourist objects in Yogyakarta and its
surrounding e.g. the Sultan Palace, Tamansari Water Castle, Yogya Kembali Monument, Prambanan
Temple, and Borobudur Temple. We hired a mini bus. Budi, my closest friend in Yogya, acted as a tour
guide. We departed very early in the morning and were back home at 6.15 p.m. So we spent the
whole day.
All of the five objects are interesting but Borobudur and Prambanan Temples are more
interesting than the others. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple, while Prambanan is a Hindu one. A friend
of mine said that these two temples were really wonderful. After I saw them by myself, they are even
more wonderful than what I have imagined. Of these two objects, Borobudur is the most wonderful
object I have ever seen. It is much bigger than Prambanan; it is one of the biggest temples in the
world. No wonder it is famous throughout the world. Everyone there looked very amazed by this huge
building. I am sure you will admire it, too. Make sure you take your camera with you when you visit it
next year.
Well, I will write to you again next week to tell you more about the temples mentioned above.
Said that the two temples were really.

Bukittinggi
20th April 2005
Dear Ghea,
My brother and I are in Bukittinggi now. We arrived here on Sunday morning at five. It was
already busy, probably because of the holidays. We went directly to the remains of “De Kock Fortress’
and found a lot of people jogging along this area. We took a rest here, sitting under the tree and
enjoyed at the fresh air.
It was almost 6.30. We went to a famous “warung”, called “Pical si Kai”. Here we had coffee,
“pical”, “ketupat gulai”, etc. Because all hotels had been full, we rented a room in a house nearby. The
room was quite nice. The bathroom was clean enough and the rent was not too expensive.
At about eight we went to “Sianok” valley. It is such a very beautiful valley. On the bank of the
valley there is a long cave, called “Japanese cave”. It is very long. It goes deeply into the ground with
an entrance at one end, and an exit at the other end. The people here said that a long time ago the
cave was used by the Japanese army to protect themselves from the Dutch attack. At that time it
seemed that there was nothing in the ground. Both the entrance and the exit were covered by plants.
Well that’s all about our first day in Bukittinggi. We are going to visit “Lake Maninjau”,
“Lembah Anai Falls”, etc. the next day. Hope to be here someday with you. Please, reply soon.

6. DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants, and are known for their role
in pollination and for producing honey and beeswax. There are nearly 20,000 known species
of bees in nine recognized families though many are undescribed and the actual number is
probably higher. They are found on every continent except Antarctica, in every habitat on the
planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants.
Bees have a long proboscis (a complex "tongue") that enables them to obtain the
nectar from flowers. They have antennae almost universally made up of 13 segments in
males and 12 in females, as is typical for the super family. Bees all have two pairs of wings,
the hind pair being the smaller of the two; in a very few species, one sex or caste has
relatively short wings that make flight difficult or impossible, but none are wingless.
The smallest bee is Trigona minima, a stingless bee whose workers are about 2.1 mm
(5/64") long. The largest bee in the world is Megachile pluto, a leafcutter bee whose females
can attain a length of 39 mm (1.5"). Members of the family Halictidae, or sweat bees, are the
most common type of bee in the Northern Hemisphere, though they are small and often
mistaken for wasps or flies.
SCOTLAND
A lot of people think that Scotland is a part of England but this is untrue. Scotland is, in fact, a part of
Great Britain. It is governed from London but in many ways it is a separate nation. It has its own capital
city, Edinburgh, its own laws and its own stamps. It even has its own language, Gaelic, spoken now by
only a few people on the islands.
There are only about five million Scots, and most of them live in the southern half of country called
‘Lowlands’, where the major cities are situated.
But most holiday visitors to Scotland go to the Highlands because of the high mountains and deep
valleys, clean rivers and cold ‘lochs’. The Highlands are home to many rare birds and animals, like the
golden eagle and the wildcat, which are found nowhere else in Britain. It is a lonely, wild and empty land.
Only two per cent of the British population live there and the population is getting smaller all the time.
There is very little work so most of the young people who are born there have to move south to find a job.
Perhaps the Highlands of Scotland will become the last great wilderness of Europe.

A forest is an area that is full of trees. We can find in the islands of Indonesia. They spread
along the island of Sumatera, Java, Kalimantan, Irian and other island in Indonesia. They are very
important for our lives.
Forest gives us many kinds of export commodities such as timber, rattans, as well as rubber.
Forests also protect us from danger of floods. In the rainy season the roots of the trees in the forest
absorb the rain water and store it under the ground. In the dry season the water will come out and it
is very useful for us for reservoir and irrigation. If there are no forests, the rain water cannot be
stored, there will be erosion of the soil and we will suffer from terrible floods.
Forests also help us to purify the air of pollution. The trees of the forests need carbon dioxide
from the air and send the oxygen out into the air, which make the air fresh and pure. The fresh and
pure air is needed for our health.

Most people don’t notice that giraffes have different patterns of spots. Certain species of
giraffes have small spots. Other species have large spots. Some species have spots than are very
regular. You can tell where one spot ends and another begins.
Other species have spots that are kind of blotchy. This means the spots are not set off from
each other as clearly. These are only two of many kind of spots. The pattern of giraffe’s spots is called
“marking”. No two giraffes have exactly the same marking.
Giraffe’s spots help them to blend in with their surroundings in Africa where they live. Being
able to blend with surroundings helps animals survive. If a lion can’t see a giraffe, he certainly can’t
eat it. This is called ‘protective coloration’. The animal’s color helps to protect it.
Another thing that protects giraffes is their keen eyesight. Their large eyes are on the sides of
their heads. Giraffes see anything that moves. They can see another animal a mile away. It is very
hard to sneak up on a giraffe. Those who try usually get a quick kick with a powerful back leg.

Masjid Saka Tunggal lies in the south of the alley, which leads into the Taman Sari
PesanggrahanI (a rest-house). This mosque is called Saka Tunggal because of its single pillar. Unlike
other Javanese traditional building, the pillar of this mosque is supported by a bar of stone called
Umpak. It is interesting to know that above umpak was once used in the palace of the Mataram
Kingdom in the Islamic period or in the period of Sultan Agung. This mosque is still in use.
Masjid Agung (the grand mosque) lies on the western side of the North Square. It is a place for
praying, as well as for holding rituals and other religious ceremonies like the Garebeg and the
Sekaten. Those two ceremonies are held every year to celebrate the Islamic Holy Days. This mosque
thus provides the Kraton with the space for side religious activities, and it was placed in front of the
palace or on the western of the North Square. This grand Mosque, with its Javanese architecture, has
a roof model which is called ‘tajug.’ Such a model was especially used for religious buildings. This

deaf, and his knees shook. When he sat at the table, he could not hold a spoon strongly. He spilled
soup on the tablecloth. Besides this, some of his soup would run back out of his mouth.

bowl fell to the ground and broke. The woman scolded. However, the old grandfather did not say

A cactus (plural: cacti) is any member of the plant family Cactaceae, native to the
Americas. They are often used as ornamental plants, but some are also crop plants.
Cacti are grown for protection of property from wild animals, as well as many other uses.
Cacti are part of the plant order Caryophyllales, which also include members like
beets, gypsophila, spinach, amaranth, tumbleweeds, carnations, rhubarb, buckwheat,
plumbago, bougainvillea, chickweed and knotgrass.
Cacti are unusual and distinctive plants, which are adapted to extremely arid and
hot environments, showing a wide range of anatomical and physiological features which
conserve water. Their stems have adapted to become photosynthetic and succulent,
while the leaves have become the spines for which cacti are well known.
Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The tallest is Pachycereus
pringlei, with a maximum recorded height of 19.2 m, and the smallest is Blossfeldia
liliputiana, only about 1 cm in diameter at maturity. Cactus flowers are large, and like the
spines and branches arise from areoles. Many cactus species are night blooming, as
they are pollinated by nocturnal insects or small animals, principally moths and bats.
Cacti range in size from small and globular to tall and columnar.

The word communication comes from the verb communicate, which means to give or
exchange information, news, ideas or opinions by speech or writing. In other words, communication is
the sending of information or news from one person to another, or the exchange of such information
or news between people.
Through communication people learn from one another the things they want to know.
Imagine if human beings could not communicate with one another. If a person cannot communicate,
he was not talk to other people, and not other people will talk to him or teach him anything. So it
would be impossible for him to learn anything. Can be learn anything by himself?
How could a child learn to do anything at all if he did not have the chance to communicate
with other people, especially with his parents, brothers and sisters? He would not learn to talk and
would not learn to do any other things either. Some must teach the child. In other words, someone
must communicate knowledge and skills to the child.
The main way people communicate with one another is by speaking. Two people can
communicate with one another is by speaking. Two people can communicate in this way when they
are near to each other. Nowadays, however, we can use electronic instruments like he telephone,
radio and telegraph as a means of communication. If we do not have a telephone or a radio, we can
still communicate by writing letters.
Writing began when men used pictures to explain their thoughts to others. Now writing has
become a very important means of communication. Newspapers, magazines, books and other printed
materials use writing. Since communication is important for gaining knowledge, you must
communicate actively with other people, especially with your teachers and friends at school.

OUR FOREST
Indonesia has some Of the richest forests in the world. The total area of forested land is
approximately 120 million hectares.
These forests have existed for million of years and they have much to offer us. They are
important for their products, such as timber, rattan (= rotan), resin (= damar), etc. They are also
important for keeping the soil fertile. The leaves of the forest trees fall to the ground an4 become
humus. The humus is fertilizer for the soil. The forests are also important for preventing soil erosion

WILDLIFE
Our world has more than 1,500,000 kinds of plants and animals. Unfortunately we have lost a
great many of those species and we are afraid that we shall lose many more if we are not careful.
We can find none or only a small number of certain species of animals because people have
been killing them. , They have done this either for food or just for fun.
As the population grows, more and more species are lost and many forests become plain.
People build dams and cause the loss of certain kinds of fish. People build wide roads, airfields and all
kinds of big buildings and cut animals off from their sources of food.
Factories of all kinds, as welt as ordinary people, throw away of all kinds into water: rivers,
lakes, seas and oceans. Several kinds of waste contain poison. Although water can absorb or take
away the waste, in some places water gets too much, then the water becomes overloaded or
polluted.
The cutting down of forests, the continuous killing of animals and the polluting of rivers, lakes
and seas are some of our greatest problems. Can we solve these problems? If we want to, we can.
Some Asian countries have built national parks and wildlife reserves to protect endangered species. In
some other countries, however, these things are difficult to do because the people there still need to
hunt these animals for food.
We can help our government by obeying hunting and fishing laws and growing new plants to
provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Sport helps us to become strong and healthy. There are many kinds of sports: walking,

Healthy people should exercise regularly, no matter how old they are. The simplest and the
best sport is walking. It is also the cheapest one, because we do not need money to do it. A long walk
in the evening may help us sleep more than any medicine.
But people today do not like walking. They prefer to drive a car, though they are not in hurry

TELEVISION
At present, almost every family has television, especially those who live in big cities. Now,
television is not: one of luxurious things anymore because it is so common that almost every family
has one.
Many people - old and young - spend their time watching television, since there are lot of
television programs we can enjoy. There are music, film, sport news and many other programs we can
choose as we wish. An interesting program makes us keep watching it, so that sometimes we forget
that we should do. It can be disturbance for us, but we still love to watch it.
Everything in this world leads to two sides; good and bad, and so does television. As one of
mass-media, television really brings many results. Of course, there are good results, and bad ones.
The good results for us are that we get entertainment. It makes happy, and it also gives information
and knowledge.
On the other hand, television shows programs that are not suitable for our culture, custom
and age. For example, the romantic and action films, that is shown at noon when children stay at
home and watch them.
However, in some ways television is very useful to us. We can choose the programmers in line
our favorite programs. We, however, should consider many aspects.

What is the ocean? It is a great body of water. It surrounds the land masses of the earth. It is
the deepest pail of the sea. If we talk about the ocean we usually think of is largeness and depth. They
make the people frightened to cross it.
There are four main oceans in this world. They are the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic
Oceans. Sometime ago they were the limits of people's knowledge of the world. People were afraid to
sail out into the ocean because no one knew what might be waiting for them there.
Fortunately, the Portuguese navigators began to overcome this darkness. They discovered the
shape of Africa. Then in 1492 Columbus sailed directly across the Atlantic. From the time on, other
navigators explored the continents and islands in the unknown seas. Those lands became familiar
parts of the world.
Today routes of travel and commerce spread out across the Ocean. They bring the whole
world together. The oceans seem small now, because it only takes a few hours to cross them in a
commercial jet plane.
Speaking of the ocean people should know the life and the forces of the sea. They must be
aware of the waves, tides, currents, and storms. They must also be aware of the wild marine animals
if they want to cross the ocean on a ship.
Seas and straits are found in many places. There are remarkable forms of life under the sea.

INDONESIA WINS BRIGHTONBRIDGE
The Indonesia bridge team received a warm welcome at home on Saturday after winning the
Bridge Union international tournament in Brighton, England. Their faces wreathed in smiles, the
bridge aces, the duo of Henky Lasut and Eddy Manoppo, the pairs of Deny Sakul and Franky Karwur
and the partnership of Santje Panelewen and Giovani Watulingas showed off the Four Stars Trophy
in a brief welcome ceremony led by chief of the Indonesia Contract Bridge Association Wiranto at
Soekarno Hatta airport.
The national team collected 92 points to triumph in the Aug. 17 - Aug. 25 events which are
billed as one of the biggest annual tournament in Europe. The world's best 280 pairs took part in this
year's meet.
Coming second behind Indonesia was Sweden, followed by the United States. Adding spice to
Indonesia's celebration, Panelewen and Watulingas were named the best tandem during the "Play

By the year 2000 the Indonesian population will have increased by 130 million, making the
total number 280 million. But if parents today follow the family planning program, the population
increase will be much less. Mainland China by the year 2000 will have a population of 4 billion people,
which is an increase of 600 million people within a time span of about 25 years. India will probably
have 11 billion people in the year 2000; this means that there will be an increase of 480 million if the
birth-rate remains as it is now.
According to records, in 1968 about two thirds of the world's population lived in less
developed areas and only one-third in the more developed areas. By the year 2000, there is a strong
possibility that the population in the less developed areas will have increased to 77 % and that the
population in the more developed areas will be only 23 % of the world's total. It is estimated that
South Asia's population will have doubled tram 1426 billion to 2,302 billion.
The governments of the developing countries are working hard to improve the people's way of
life, but they have only, succeeded to a certain extent. The Asian regions are always short of basic
needs, such as food, clothing, shelter and education. And production' gains are always lagging behind,
population growth. In order to produce more food, the government needs more farm land.
It has been predicted that by the end of this century there will be only little farmland to
support the growing population and that starvation will result. There are also optimists who think that
there is and will be plenty of food now and in the future, But these people are only counting calories.
Human beings need much more than just calories to stay alive and healthy, especially babies children.
People need their growth. Poor people cannot get high quality food, so malnutrition among the poor
is more common than shortage of calories.
We can all help to solve this problem by working hard to reduce the birth-rate.

All living things on the earth belong to the plant or the animal family. The plant family get their
food and water from the soil. They also need sunlight to grow. Some of them live in water and get
their food from the water. There are many thousands of plants.
We can divide plants into two groups. There are the plants without stems, roots or leaves.
These are the algae and the mosses. Both kinds of plants need a lot of water, algae is usually found in
water and moss is found in wet places.
The other group is the plants with stems. They consist of all the fruit trees, flower plants,
vegetables and all the timber trees. These plants have roots, stems and leaves.
The plants with stems can be divided into the flowering plants and the non-flowering plants.
The flowering plants have a fruit with a seed inside the flower. Some seeds are flat like wings and are
carried by the wind. Some seeds have fleshy fruits which animal eat and pass out. Some seeds are
collected and distributed by man. In this way plants grow once again from seeds.
The non-flowering plants have spores growing on the leaves. When they are dry they are
carried by the wind. Those spores that fall on wet soil start to grow again. These are some of the ways
that plants live and multiply.

Nowadays people become busier and busier. Sometimes they have to do some important
