Tenses dalam Teks Naratif

Narrative tenses merupakan istilah yang umum digunakan untuk merujuk pada pembahasan
ini. Narrative tenses adalah struktur kebahasaan yang kita gunakan ketika kita menceritakan
sesuatu atau berbicara tentang situasi dan aktifitas yang terjadi pada suatu waktu di masa lalu.

Ketika menarasikan kejadian-kejadian lampau, JANGAN mencampur adukkan past tense dan
present tense (hindari penggunaan present perfect dan simple present), karena ini akan
membingungkan pembaca/ pendengar terkait waktu terjadinya kejadian-kejadian yang
diceritakan.

Berikut Narrative Tenses yang paling umum digunakan dan contoh penggunaannya.
1. The Simple Past Tense
Past tense merupakan suatu bentuk kata kerja sederhana yang berfungi untuk menjelaskan
suatu kejadian pada masa lalu. Kata-kata yang sering digunakan pada tenses jenis ini adalah
yesterday, last two days, last year dan lain-lain.

Rumus yang digunakan untuk tenses ini adalah :

 Kalimat positif
Subjek + verb2 (past tense) Subjek + be (was/ were)
 Kalimat negatif
Subjek + did + not + bare infinitive
Subjek + be (was/ were) + not
 Kalimat tanya
Did + subjek + bare infinitive Be (was/ were) + subjek
Perhatikan contoh kalimat yang menggunakan past tense berikut ini :

(+) You called Ryan.

(-) Did you call Ryan?
(?) You did not call Ryan.

Penggunaan simple past tense

a) Untuk menceritakan kejadian yang terjadi pada suatu waktu yang pasti di masa lalu.
Kejadian terpisah yang terjadi secara berurutan pada teks naratif diungkapkan dengan
menggunakan tense ini.
Contoh:
Cinderella lived (1) with her step mother and two step sisters. They treated (2) Cinderella
very badly. Her step mother made (3) Cinderella do the hardest works in the house.

b) Untuk mengungkapkan kebiasaan masa lampau Contoh:

I went to school in São Paulo until my family moved to Rio.

CATATAN: kata Used to + verb sering digunakan untuk mengungkapkan kebiasaan masa
lampau dan menyatakan kejadian masa lampau yang sudah tidak terjadi lagi saat ini. Kata
Used to tidak bias digunakan untuk mengungkapkan kejadian yang hanya terjadi satu kali.

c) Untuk menjelaskan kejadian pada masa lalu dan telah selesai dilakukan pada waktu yang
ditentukan. Contoh :
 I saw a movie yesterday.
 I didn't see a play yesterday.
 Last year, I traveled to Japan.

d) untuk menjelaskan beberapa kejadian yang telah dilakukan pada masa lalu. Biasanya
kejadian-kejadian tersebut dilakukan secara berurutan. Perhatikan contoh berikut :
 Mr. John finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
 Jane arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at
10:00.

e) untuk menjelaskan beberapa kejadian yang telah dilakukan pada masa lalu. Biasanya
kejadian-kejadian tersebut dilakukan secara berurutan. Perhatikan contoh berikut :
 Mr. John finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
 Jane arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others
at 10:00.

f) Untuk menceritakan kejadian yang dimulai dan berakhir pada masa lalu dan biasanya
memiliki durasi. Kata yang banyak digunakan adalah for two years, for five minutes, all day,
all year, dan lain-lain.
Contoh :
 Bambang studied English for five years
 They sleep in my room all day
g) Untuk menceritakan kebiasaan yang pernah dilakukan pada masa lalu dan tidak dilakukan
lagi pada masa sekarang.
Contoh :
 She played the violin.
 Gio didn't play the piano.

h) Untuk mendeskripsikan fakta atau hal umum pada masa lalu dan pada masa ini sudah tidak
lagi benar. Penggunaan simple past tense fungsi ini memiliki fungsi yang hampir sama
dengan fugsi used to.
Contoh :
 When I paid her five dollar, Jane answered my question
 Jane answered my question when I paid her five dollar

i) Untuk menceritakan kejadian yang dimulai dan berakhir pada masa lalu dan biasanya
memiliki durasi. Kata yang banyak digunakan adalah for two years, for five minutes, all day,
all year, dan lain-lain.
Contoh :
 Bambang studied English for five years
 They sleep in my room all day

j) Untuk menceritakan kebiasaan yang pernah dilakukan pada masa lalu dan tidak dilakukan
lagi pada masa sekarang.
Contoh :
 She played the violin.
 Gio didn't play the piano.

k) Untuk mendeskripsikan fakta atau hal umum pada masa lalu dan pada masa ini sudah tidak
lagi benar. Penggunaan simple past tense fungsi ini memiliki fungsi yang hampir sama
dengan fugsi used to.
Contoh :
 When I paid her five dollar, Jane answered my question
 Jane answered my question when I paid her five dollar completed before a specified
time).
 SNOW WHITE
Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Snow White. She lived with her aunt and uncle
because her parents were dead.

One day she heard her uncle and aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because
they both wanted to go to America and they didn’t have enough money to take Snow White.
Snow White didn’t want her uncle and aunt to do that so she decided that it would be best if
she ran away. The next morning she ran away into the woods. She was very tired and hungry.
Then she saw a little cottage. She knocked but no one answered so she went inside and fell
asleep.
Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. There they found Snow White
sleeping. Then Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs.
The dwarfs said, “What is your name?”
Snow White said, “My name is Snow White.”
Then, Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story.
The dwarfs said, “If you want, you may live here with us.”
Snow White answered, “Oh, could I? Thank you.”
Finally, Snow White and the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.
