Read the text below!

SIDOMBA

When I went travelling last month. I went to sidomba waterfall with my


friends. I arrived at sidomba at 11 am, I have seen the playground there, and we
have taken the photographs. At 1 until 2 pm I saw a waterfall, then for the first
thing I did, I took my photos and I played water with my friends.
In the Sidomba I have eaten chicken noodle and the taste was very delicious.
It was my experience at sidomba with my friends. And then we came back home at
3 pm.

From the text above, we can see that the text uses simple past tense and present
perfect tense. Can you show which sentences use simple past tense or present perfect
tense? The italic sentence is simple past tense. The writer started and finished taking his/
her photos. The underlined sentence uses present perfect tense. The writer wants to
indicate that an action happened very recently in the past.

From the dialogue above, we can see that sentence “Sorry, I have seen it “ uses
present perfect tense (Have +verb 3). It indicates that an action happened very recently
in the past. The sentence “ I saw it last night“ uses simple past tense (verb 2), it started
and finished seeing the movie.

Simple past tense may refer to :


One event completed in the past.
 I saw him last night.
 They left one minute ago.
Repeated events completed in the past and no longer happening.
 When I was young, I went to school on foot every day.
Duration of an event completed in the past.
 In Columbus’day, people believed that the earth was flat.

Present perfect tense may refer to :


Events in certain adverbial or adjective clauses.
 I will not come to the party until I have finished my homework.
Events that started and finished in the past but bring meaning to the
present.
 I have read the novel. (you can borrow it.)

PAST EVENTS

Simple Past Tense


The regular ending for the past simple, for all person, is –ed.
Only the verb to be has two separate forms for the past: was for the
singular, were for the plural.
There are many verb ending in –t such as learnt, burnt, spelt, spilt,
dwelt, etc.
The word ago requires the use of past tense, event if the time
indicated comes almost up to the present (they left one minute ago).

Present Perfect Tense


There are some indicators of time that mark a past-to-present event.
1. Preposition indicating duration.
During, in, over
 He has studied english in the last five years.
 He has remained calm during the whole lesson.
 The school fee has been extended over a two-year period.

2. Adverbials meaning past-to-present time (so far, up to now, until
now, up to the present).

Simple past tense : it is used to talk about
activities or situations that began and
ended at particular time at the past

Function
Present perfect tense indicates either
that an action was completed/ finished/
perfected at some point at the past or
that the action extended to present.

STRUCTURE PAST

Simple past tense


We use Simple Past Tense to talk about a finished action in the past, often
with time expressions like yesterday, last week, a year ago etc. This is by far
the most common way of talking about the past.. Example : I lived in Jakarta
in 2010.

Read the text below and analyze simple past form:
I went to North Sumatera last week. It was great holiday. I spent two days
in a wonderful hotel Toba Lake. It took almost 6 hours to reach Parapat from
Medan’s Kuala Namu Aiport and another 30 minutes to samosir Island but it’s
worth the long journey. It’s a pity we only stayed for 1 night at Samosir Island
before proceeding to Berastagi. I took a boat ride and saw the lake and
mountains. It was very tiring but the view of the lake was just gorgeous.

Present perfect Tense


Pay attention to the following examples!
a) Saya telah tinggal di Jakarta selama dua tahun (Indonesian)
b) I have lived in Jakarta for two years. (English).
According to the sentences above, how long has the speaker lived in Jakarta?
Does he still live Jakarta now? The answer is yes. It means that present
perfect tense is used to tell about a present condition as a result of an event
or condition in the past. Rule :

Examples:
 My mother has lived in Palembang. (+)
My mother has not lived in Palembang.(-)
Has My mother lived in Palembang.(?)
 We have gone to Papua twice.(+)
We have not gone to Papua twice.(-)
Have We gone to Papua twice?(?)
Note : Plural subject(They, We, I, You) uses tobe have. Singular subject (she, he,it)
uses tobe has.

Study about a short text that uses simple past tense and present perfect
tense.
Bella and Vita were best friends. When they were small girls, they did
everything together. When one of them had a problem, the other always tried to
help. However, somethiing made their relationship broken. On 2016, Bella went
abroad with her family. Bella told her moving late, so that Vita was angry. She
didn’t want to hear Bella’s reason. Vita thought that Bella hid somthing from her.
From that time, they didn’t contact each other. Bella has lived in Singapore since
then. She has been a popular model. Her life has changed, she hasn’t returned to
her hometown because her work. She has lived in Singapore for more that five
years. Bella has tried to call Vita many times, but Vita’s number is inactive. Often
she remembers the time when they gather with their friends in New year party.
They had so much fun, but now Vita hasn’t apologized her. Only the time will tell
when they meet again.
