CONGRATULATING AND COMPLIMENTING OTHERS

1. Congratulating Others
Expression of congratulation is expression that is used to congratulate someone when he
or she has achieved. Every text of expression has function, structure, and also language
features to guide us to build a good text. Before we create a certain text, it's better for us to
understand those items and try to follow the rules one by one.
(Ungkapan selamat adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk mengucapkan selamat kepada
seseorang ketika dia telah mencapai. Setiap teks ekspresi memiliki fungsi, struktur, dan juga
ciri kebahasaan untuk memandu kita dalam membangun sebuah teks yang baik. Sebelum kita
membuat teks tertentu, ada baiknya kita memahami item-item tersebut dan mencoba
mengikuti aturannya satu per satu).

 Social Function is to congratulate someone about his/her achievement. The achievement

is not only about winning something but also in other kind of condition, like graduating
from a certain education, celebrating something, and getting something new.

(Fungsi Sosial dari ucapan selamat adalah mengucapkan selamat kepada seseorang atas
pencapaiannya. Pencapaian itu tidak hanya tentang memenangkan sesuatu tetapi juga
dalam kondisi lain, seperti lulus dari pendidikan tertentu, merayakan sesuatu, dan
mendapatkan sesuatu yang baru).

 Generic Structure or structure text of congratulation has the same structure like other
expressions. We'll find only two structures in expression, they are:

ekspresi lainnya. Kita hanya akan menemukan dua struktur dalam ekspresi, yaitu)

 Expressions of Congratulation
1. Congratulation for + noun
Example
Congratulation for the result of test
(Selamat atas nilai tesnya)

Congratulation for the new position

(Selamat atas jabatan barunya)

2. Congratulation for + being + noun

Example
Congratulation for being the new manager
(Selamat karena telah menjadi manager baru)

Congratulation for being the champion

(Selamat karena menjadi juara)

1. Thanks. I hope so too (terima kasih. Saya harap kamu juga)
2. You are welcome (sama-sama)
3. It’s very good of you to say so (menyenangkan kamu berkata seperti itu)
4. How nice of you to say so  (terima kasih. Senang mendengarnya)
5. Thank you very much for saying so (terima kasih atas harapannya)

2. Complimenting Others
Complementing is an expression used to praise or appreciate someone, who hopes that
person will maintain their achievements or keep their enthusiasm for learning.

(Complementing ialah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk memuji atau mengapresiasi

seseorang, yang harapannya orang tersebut akan mempertahankan prestasinya atau tetap
semangat dalam belajar). 
Kapan kita memberikan apresiasi?
1. Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, ketika seseorang memberikan atau melakukan yang
terbaik
2. Ketika kamu mengetahui penampilan baru temanmu
3. Ketika kamu mengunjungi rumah temanmu untuk pertama kali.
4. Dan masih banyak yang lainnya.

 Social Function of compliment is an expression used to express our praise to someone. It

is used by us everytime we find something good of someone to make him or her happy
and improve his or her performance.

(Fungsi sosial pujian adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan pujian kita
kepada seseorang. Ini digunakan oleh kita setiap kali kita menemukan sesuatu yang baik
dari seseorang untuk membuatnya bahagia dan meningkatkan kinerjanya).

1. What a + noun/ noun phrase
Example
What a nice hat! (Sungguh tas yang indah)
What a clever student you are!  (sungguh murid yang cerdas kamu)

2. What + noun/ noun phrase

Example
What beautiful flowers (Sungguh bunga-bunga yang indah)
What expensive cars you have!  (sungguh mahal-mahal mobil yang kamu punya)
 3. How + noun/ noun phrase
Example
How wonderful your painting! (betapa indahnya lukisanmu)
How big your house!  (betapa besarnya rumahmu!)

4. You look + noun/ noun phrase

Example
You look handsome with your clothes! (kamu terlihat ganteng dengan pakaianmu)
You look pretty with that hat!  (kamu terlihat cantik dengan topi itu!)

2. Thank you very much  (terima kasih banyak)
3. Thank you for your apreciation  (terima kasih atas apresiasimu)
4. I’m glad you like it (senang kamu menyukainya)
TASK 1 :
Read text 1 carefully. Pay attention to the expressions used to congratulate people (in this
case, Alif). Pay attention also to the responses.
TEXT 1:
After a long struggle and hard work, Alif is finally appointed as the director of a national
company where he works. Many of his friends who work at the same company congratulate
him.
Samuel : Alif, congratulations. You deserved it, Man.
Alif : Thank you very much. This is because you always help me.
Sinta : I am very happy for you, Alif. Now, that you are the director of the company, I
believe the company will develop even faster.

Alif : (replies with a happy tone) Thank you. I cannot forget your collaboration with me,
and I will still need your help.

Other friends shake his hands and congratulate him too.

Deni : That’s wonderful, Alif.
Alif : Oh, thanks.
Santi : Good for you. Good luck.
Alif : Thank you very much.
Bejo : Well done.
Alif : Thank you for saying so.
Ivan : That was great. You must be very proud of your achievement.

Alif : Thanks. I’m glad you think so. But I still have to learn a lot.

His staff also congratulate him.

Eny : Please accept my warmest congratulations, Sir.
Alif : It’s very kind of you to say so. Thank you.
Bintari : I must congratulate you on your success.
Alif : Thank you very much for saying so.
They all celebrate Alif’s success by having lunch together in a simple food stall next to their
office. Every body is happy.
