NARRATIVE TEXT
Cinderella
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Cinderella. She lived with her step mother and
two step sisters. The step mother and her two daughters didn’t like Cinderella. They treated
Cincerella very bad. Cinderella usually did the hardest works in the house; such as scrubbing
the floor, cleaning the pot and pan and preparing the food for the family, and so on.
One day, a ball was to be held by the royal family of the kingdom to find the Prince’s spouse.
Cinderella wanted to go to the ball but her step mother asked her to stay at home and do the
house works. Cinderella cried. Then there was a fairy godmother standing beside her.
“Why are you crying, Cinderella?”, the fairy godmother asked.
“Because I want to go to the ball but my step mother insists me to stay at home. Besides, I
don’t have any beautiful dress” said Cinderella.
Then the fairy turned Cinderella’s ugly dress became the most beautiful dress and with
beautiful slippers. The fairy also turned a pumpkin into a parking coach and the mice become
six white horses. Cinderella fiinally could go to the ball but she had to come back before
midnight before the spell ended.
At the ball, Cinderella amazed everybody there include the Prince. The Prince asked her to
dance. Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball. But, all of a sudden, she heard the sound
of a clock, the first stroke of midnight. Remembered what the fairy had said, Cinderella ran
back to go home. But she lost one of her slippers in ballroom. The Prince picked up her
slipper and would search for the girl whose foot fitted with the slipper.
A few days later, the Prince proclaimed that he would marry the girl whose feet fitted the
slipper. Her step sisters tried on the slipper but it was too small for them, no matter how hard
they squeezed their toes into it. In the end, the King’s solder let Cinderella try on the slipper.
She stuck out her foot and the page slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.
(who) Waktu (when) Tempat (when) Baca juga: Penggunaan To Be: Is, Am, dan Are
Baca juga: Penggunaan To Be: Was dan Were Karakteristik
bahasa narrative text Narrative text memiliki karakteristik atau fitur bahasa sebagai berikut:
Menggunakan past tense (kecuali untuk percakapan) Keterangan waktu (suatu hari, sekali
waktu, dahulu kala, dan lainnya) Konjungsi waktu (kapan, kemudian, tiba-tiba) Karakteristik
spesifik Kata kerja aksi (action verbs) Kalimat langsung Contoh narrative text: The Rabbit
and the Turtle One day a rabbit was boasting about how fast he could run. He was laughing at
the turtle for being so slow. Much to the rabbit’s surprise, the turtle challenged him to a race.
The rabbit thought this was a good joke and accepted the challenge. The fox was to be the
umpire of the race. As the race began, the rabbit raced way ahead of the turtle, just like
everyone thought. The rabbit got to the halfway point and could not see the turtle anywhere.
He was hot and tired and decided to stop and take a short nap. All this time the turtle kept
walking step by step by step. He never quit no matter how hot or tired he got. He just kept
going. However, the rabbit slept longer than he had thought and woke up. He could not see
the turtle anywhere! He went at full-speed to the finish line but found the turtle there waiting
for him.

Bandung Trip
Last holiday, exactly two months ago, I went to Bandung with my best friend, Anna. We
decided to have a trip there for three days long. Luckily, I and Anna had the same interest in
places that we would like to visit. That made the trip easier and more fun!
We didn’t have any plans on the first day because we arrived at 5 p.m. by bus. That moment,
we were tired and decided to have some rest in our hotel. Woke up in the middle of the night,
we realized we had missed dinner. But, Anna suggested ordering food online and watching
horror series together instead.
The next day, we rented a motorbike. After that, we visited a beautiful place named Punclut.
It was a little far from our hotel. But trust me, we were astonished the first second we got
there! The view was amazing and we couldn’t handle taking many pictures. As time went by,
it was getting colder so we had to warm ourselves by drinking chamomile tea.
We had dinner at a seafood restaurant. Anna ate a bowl of fish soup while I enjoyed my
grilled salmon and green mussels. The taste was fantastic yet we knew that we were
satisfyingly full. On our way back to the hotel, we bought some traditional snacks from
Bandung to accompany us while binge-watching good movies.
Our last day came that fast. We packed our things in the very morning and took the last trip to
Farm House. After taking pictures, we moved to another place where we bought more
traditional snacks and souvenirs for our family members back home. At approximately 5
p.m., we returned the motorbike and went home by bus.
Since we arrived at 12 p.m., Anna decided to sleepover at my house. We still talked about our
fun times in Bandung and shared pictures. We really wanted to go there next time. Bandung
was amazing after all!

Keesokan harinya, kami menyewa sepeda motor. Setelah itu kami mengunjungi tempat indah
bernama Punclut. Itu agak jauh dari hotel kami. Tapi percayalah, kami terkejut pada detik
pertama kami sampai di sana! Pemandangannya menakjubkan dan kami tidak dapat
mengambil banyak gambar. Seiring berjalannya waktu, cuaca semakin dingin sehingga kami
harus menghangatkan diri dengan meminum teh kamomil.
Kami makan malam di restoran makanan laut. Anna makan semangkuk sup ikan sementara
aku menikmati salmon panggang dan kerang hijau. Rasanya luar biasa namun kami tahu

dikunjungi, seperti Pantai Papuma, Pantai Watu Ulo, Watu Ondo, Pantai Pancer, Rembangan,
biasanya berbicara bahasa Madura.

PAST CONTINUOUS
The Past Continuous tense is an important tense in English. We use it to say what we were in
the middle of doing at a particular moment in the past.
In this lesson we look at the structure and the use of the Past Continuous tense, followed by
a quiz to check your understanding.
Note that continuous tenses are also called progressive tenses. So the Past Continuous tense
is sometimes called the Past Progressive tense.
For negative sentences we insert not between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.
The spelling rules for adding -ing to make the Past Continuous tense are the same as for the
Present Continuous tense.
How do we use the Past Continuous tense?
The Past Continuous tense expresses action at a particular moment in the past. The action
started before that moment but has not finished at that moment. For example, yesterday I
watched a film on TV. The film started at 7pm and finished at 9pm.
8pm
When we use the Past Continuous tense, our listener usually knows or understands what time
we are talking about. Look at these examples:
What were you doing when he arrived?
We often use the Past Continuous tense to "set the scene" in stories. We use it to describe the
background situation at the moment when the action begins. Often, the story starts with the
Past Continuous tense and then moves into the Past Simple tense. Here is an example:
We often use the Past Continuous tense with the Past Simple tense. We use the Past
Continuous to express a long action. And we use the Past Simple to express a short action
that happens in the middle of the long action. We can join the two ideas with when or while.
In the following example, we have two actions:
long action:
I was watching TV from 7pm to 9pm.
8pm
short action:
You phoned at 8pm.
Notice that "when you telephoned" is also a way of defining the time (8pm).
We use:
"Walking past the car" took a few seconds. "Exploded" took milliseconds.
4. EXPLANATION TEXT
Ada dua tipe dalam penulisan explanation text. Tipe pertama, teks yang menjelaskan
mengapa sesuatu terjadi, seperti mengapa kaca berembun ketika kita mandi. Kemudian tipe
jatuh melalui udara kering. Hal ini disebut Virga, sebuah fenomena yang sering terlihat di
daerah gurun yang panas dan kering.
Penjelasan:
Contoh teks di atas adalah explanation text karena teks tersebut menjelaskan tentang
fenomena alam yaitu terjadinya hujan. Selain itu, teks tersebut mempunyai ciri-ciri dan
struktur yang sama dengan ciri-ciri dan struktur Explanation Text, yaitu:
Ciri-ciri:
Menggunakan Simple Present Tense
Dapat kita lihat bahwa semua kalimat pada teks tersebut menggunakan Simple Present Tense.
Menggunakan Action Verbs. Contohnya, experiences dan drop.
Menggunakan Passive Voices. Contohnya, “Condensed vapor is formed from droplets so that
when the air temperature is higher…”.
Menggunakan Noun Phrases. Contohnya, Earth’s water surface.
Menggunakan Technical Terms. Contohnya, evaporate, condensation, dan Virga.
Berisi penjelasan mengenai proses terjadinya hujan.
Generic Structure:
General Statement (paragraf 1)
Berisi tentang informasi umum mengenai hujan.
Explanation (paragraf 2)
Berisi serangkaian tahapan-tahapan terjadinya hujan.
Closing (paragraf 3)
Bagian closing atau penutup berisi informasi tambahan berupa hujan yang turun di daerah
dingin (snow) dan di daerah panas (Virga).
The Present Continuous / Progressive

The interrogative forms of the present continuous
Am I eating?
Is he, she, it

The present continuous is used to talk about actions happening at the time of
speaking.
Example:
What are you doing at the moment in front of your screen? Don't you know?
Well … you are reading this lesson. You are learning English.
The present continuous can also be used when an action has started but hasn’t finished
yet.
Example:
I am reading a book; it’s a nice book. (It means = I am not necessarily
reading it; I started reading it but I haven’t finished it yet.)
Special verbs
There are verbs which are normally not used in the present continuous.
Examples:
be, believe, belong, hate, hear, like, love, mean, prefer, remain, realize, see, seem, smell,
think, understand, want, wish
These verbs are called stative verbs in contrast to action verbs (also referred to as 'dynamic
verbs') such as 'work, play, eat, etc.'
Cramming is Bad
How do you study when the test is coming? Do you start preparing for the test weeks or
months before the test or leave things to the last hour? If you start studying weeks or months
before the test, it is great. However, if you study all the material in the last hour or minute, it
is not good for you and it is called cramming.
Cramming is the situation when students stay up until morning to study before their test. This
habit can lead to negative impacts for some reason. The first reason is that disruptions in the
regular sleep cycle can cause temporary intellectual lapses. For most students, less sleep can
make them could not focus in the class. Additionally, cramming can leave us with
“something that I have seen before” in our memory. However, being able to recognize
something is not the same as being able to recall it. Besides that, each person has their
different sleeping time, so some of them often use a stimulant for cramming. Furthermore,
that stimulant gives bad effect to its consumers.
The example stimulant is coffee. It causes many problems such as Caffeine Intoxiation
Syndrome, anxiety, panic, headaches, and so on. To sum up, cramming is bad because it
disturbs our regular sleep cycle which cause temporary intellectualn lapses and using
stimulant for cramming gives bad effect to our health.

struktur yang sama dengan ciri-ciri dan struktur Analytical Exposition Text, yaitu:
Ciri-ciri:
Merupakan teks argumentatif yang disertai alasan-alasan yang mendukung.
Seperti yang kita lihat, teks tersebut disampaikan dengan beberapa alasan yang mendukung
argumen.
Menggunakan Present Tense
Semua kalimat dalam teks tersebut menggunakan Present Tense.
Contoh: Cramming is the situation when students stay up until morning to study before their

first reason, additionally, furthermore, dan thus.
Menggunakan kata-kata evaluatif.
Kata-kata evaluatif yang dapat kita temukan dalam teks tersebut contohnya adalah bad, great,
good, dan negatif.
Menggunakan causal conjunctions contohnya because.
Struktur teks:
Thesis: This habit can lead to negative impacts for some reason.
Arguments:
Disruptions in the regular sleep cycle can cause temporary intellectual lapses.
* Not able to focus
* Just recognize, but not able to remember the material.
Using stimulant for cramming gives bad effect to its consumers.
Conlusion:

temporary intellectualn lapses and using stimulant for cramming gives bad effect to our
health.
The simple future refers to a time later than now, and expresses facts or certainty. In this case
there is no 'attitude'.
To express willingness:
I'll do the washing-up.
He'll carry your bag for you.
With I in the interrogative form using "shall", to ask for advice or instructions:
What shall I tell the boss about this money?
With you, to give orders:
You will do exactly as I say.
Note:In modern English will is preferred to shall. Shall is mainly used with I and we to make
an offer or suggestion, or to ask for advice (see examples above). With the other persons
(you, he, she, they) shall is only used in literary or poetic situations, e.g. "With rings on her
fingers and bells on her toes, She shall have music wherever she goes."
The simple future tense is composed of two parts: will / shall + the infinitive without to

6. HORTATORY EXPOSITION TEXT
Sebenarnya teks argumentative terbagi menjadi 2 bagian. Hortatory exposition dan analytical
exposition text. Tetapi keduanya mempunyai fungsi yang berbeda. Perbedaan hortatory exposition
Bahasa Indonesia artinya “Rekomendasi”. Bagian ini merupakan bagian akhir atau penutup dalam
sebuah hortatory exposition text dan di sinilah sang penulis bisa menyatakan saran, bujukan atau
desakan yang ia inginkan terjadi.
Unsur kebahasaan atau language feature dari Hortatory Exposition text pada dasarnya tidak berbeda
dengan analytical exposition. Hal ini karena keduanya sama-sama merupakan jenis teks exposition.
Ciri Bahasa Hortatory Exposition Text secara umum meliputi:
Thesis
In all discussion over the removal of leaded vehicles from petrol (and atmosphere) there doesn’t seem
to have been any mention of the difference between driving in the city and the country.
Argument 1
While I realize my leaded petrol car is polluting the air wherever I drive, I feel that when you travel
through the country, where you only see another car every five to ten minutes, the problem is not as
severe as when traffic is concentrated on city roads.
Argument 2
Those who want to penalize older, leaded petrol vehicles and their owners don’t seem to appreciate
that in the country there is no public transport to fall back upon and one’s own vehicle is the only way
to get about.
Recommendation
I feel that country people, who often have to travel huge distances to the nearest town and who
already spend a great deal of money on petrol, should be treated differently to the people who live in
the city.
The Present Perfect tense is a rather important tense in English, but it gives speakers of some
languages a difficult time. That is because it uses concepts or ideas that do not exist in those
languages. In fact, the structure of the Present Perfect is very simple. The problems come
with the use of the tense. In addition, there are some differences in usage between British and
American English.
In this lesson we look at the structure and use of the Present Perfect tense, as well as the use
of for and since, followed by a quiz to check your understanding.
The Present Perfect tense is really a very interesting tense, and a very useful one. Try not to
translate the Present Perfect into your language. Just try to accept the concepts of this tense
and learn to "think" Present Perfect! You will soon learn to like the Present Perfect tense!
For negative sentences we insert not between the auxiliary verb and the main verb.
When we use the Present Perfect in speaking, we often contract the subject and auxiliary
verb. We also sometimes do this in informal writing.
I have I've
He has He's
She has She's
It has It's
John has John's
The car has The car's
We have We've
This tense is called the Present Perfect tense. There is always a connection with the
past and with the present.
experience

continuing situation
We often use the Present Perfect to talk about experience from the past. We are not
interested in when you did something. We only want to know if you did it:
- +
+ -
- +
Americans do use the Present Perfect but less than British speakers. Americans often use the
Past Simple tense instead. An American might say "Did you have lunch?", where a British
person would say "Have you had lunch?"
We often use the Present Perfect to talk about a continuing situation. This is a state that
started in the past and continues in the present (and will probably continue into the future).
This is a situation (not an action). We usually use for or since with this structure.
The situation started in the It continues up to now. (It will probably continue
past. into the future.)
Connection with past: the situation started in the past.
Connection with present: the situation continues in the present.
We use for to talk about a period of time: five minutes, two weeks, six years
We use since to talk about a point in past time: 9 o'clock, 1st January, Monday

as the use of for and since, followed by a quiz to check your understanding.

When we use the Present Perfect Continuous tense in speaking, we often contract the subject
and the first auxiliary verb. We also sometimes do this in informal writing.
In negative sentences, we may contract the first auxiliary verb and "not":

We use since to talk about a point in past time: 9 o'clock, 1st January, Monday
for since
------------ -•----------
30 minutes 10.00am
3 months March
2 years 2010
3 centuries 1700
etc etc
Look at these example sentences using for and since with the Present Perfect Continuous
tense:
Ujian Geografi
Hari itu kelasku akan ujian Geografi. Semua orang sibuk belajar.
Satu jam”, katanya memberi instruksi. Setengah jam pertama digunakan oleh Andy untuk
membaca pertanyaan dan mencoba melakukannya sendiri. Semakin keras dia mencoba untuk
mengingat, semakin dia lupa.

Kejadian A Kejadian B
Kejadian A Kejadian B
Kejadian B Kejadian A
Kejadian B Kejadian A
Past perfect tense dalam bahasa Inggris tersusun dari dua bagian: past tense dari kata kerja to
have (had) + past participle dari kata kerja utama.
Positif
She ha given
d
Negatif
Sh hadn't asked
e
Pertanyaan
Pertanyaan negatif
Just digunakan dengan past perfect untuk merujuk ke kejadian yang hanya sedikit lebih awal
dari sebelum sekarang, seperti:
Statement: You had been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally
arrived.
Question: Had you been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally
arrived?
Negative: You had not been waiting there for more than two hours when she finally
arrived.
We use the past perfect continuous to show that something started in the past and continued
up until another time in the past. "For five minutes" and "for two weeks" are both durations
which can be used with the past perfect continuous. Notice that this is related to the present
perfect continuous; however, the duration does not continue until now, it stops before
something else in the past.
Examples:
They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived.
She had been working at that company for three years when it went out of business.
Mike wanted to sit down because he had been standing all day at work.
James had been teaching at the university for more than a year before he left for
Asia.
Using the past perfect continuous before another action in the past is a good way to show
cause and effect.
Examples:
Betty failed the final test because she had not been attending class.
If you do not include a duration such as "for five minutes," "for two weeks" or "since Friday,"
many English speakers choose to use the past continuous rather than the past perfect
continuous. Be careful because this can change the meaning of the sentence. Past continuous
emphasizes interrupted actions, whereas past perfect continuous emphasizes a duration of
time before something in the past. Study the examples below to understand the difference.
Examples:
Examples:
The motorcycle had been belonging to George for years before Tina bought it. Not
Correct
The motorcycle had belonged to George for years before Tina bought it. Correct
ADVERB PLACEMENT
The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never,
ever, still, just, etc.
Examples:
You had only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived.
Had you only been waiting there for a few minutes when she arrived?
ACTIVE / PASSIVE
Examples:
Chef Jones had been preparing the restaurant's fantastic dinners for two years before
he moved to Paris. Active
The restaurant's fantastic dinners had been being prepared by Chef Jones for two
years before he moved to Paris. Passive
NOTE: Passive forms of the past perfect continuous are not common.
10. DISCUSSION TEXT
Having a serious relationship with someone you’ve only been best friends until now may not
be an easy task, but the following advantages may just make taking the risk worth it. Firstly,
you have already laid the groundwork. A strong emotional bond is a strong foundation of any
successful relationship. Next, you can bypass the awkward stuff. The good news about dating
your best friend is that you can simply enjoy the excitement of taking your relationship to the
next level. Besides, you have already had a solid emotional bond and have shared history of
togetherness such as graduating from the same university together or gathering family by
your side. Having shared important moments in each other’s lives will make your connection
stronger and even more likely to last.
On the other side, dating your best friend has also some disadvantages. Before taking a
romantic relationship with your best friend, take a moment to consider the following
drawbacks. First, are you willing to make the sacrifice? What if it doesn’t last? If you break
up, you might loss your friendship forever. Second, there is always a possibility for not
having a mutual feeling between both of you. Decide in advance what your plans might be if
your friend does not reciprocate: can you continue your friendship with him/her? Could you
take it if he/she dates someone else? Third, although you’ll bypass the awkward getting-to-
know-you stage, missing out on discovering a new person, their personality and their interests
could prove to be a little boring for you.
While there are risks involved with confessing romantic feelings to your best friend, it is
worth remembering that the greatest and most successful relationships often grow from great
friendships, and it might just be the best decision you’ll ever make.
Bahasa:
kerugian-kerugian berikut. Pertama, apakah Anda bersedia untuk berkorban? Bagaimana jika
hubungan tersebut tidak berlangsung? Jika Anda putus, Anda mungkin kehilangan
persahabatan Anda selamanya. Kedua, selalu ada kemungkinan untuk tidak memiliki
perasaan bersama antara Anda berdua.
Tentukan terlebih dahulu apa rencana Anda jika mungkin sahabat Anda tidak membalas
perasaan Anda: dapatkah Anda melanjutkan persahabatan Anda dengan nya? Bisakah Anda
menerima jika mereka bersama orang lain?

Nouns are an all-star team of words and always have a player ready to step up to the plate, no matter
the challenge. Common nouns, proper nouns, abstract nouns, and concrete nouns are our go-to nouns
but there are many types of nouns ready to get in the game. To learn the difference between all these
nouns, use this guide to link to in-depth articles about each type of noun.
What is a noun?
A noun is a word that refers to a person, place, or thing. The category of “things” may sound super
vague, but in this case it means inanimate objects, abstract concepts, and activities. Phrases and other
parts of speech can also behave like nouns and can be the subject in a sentence, as in Jogging is a fun
exercise. Here, the verb jogging acts like a noun and is the subject of the sentence.
7) Collective nouns
A collective noun is a noun that functions as a singular noun while referring to a group of people or
things. A collective noun refers to a group that functions as one unit or performs the same action at
the same time. For example: the team plays in the main gym.
collective nouns:
crowd, flocks, committee, a sum of money

8) Compound nouns
A compound noun combines two or more words into one. Compound nouns can appear as a single
word, multiple words used separately, or words connected by hyphens.
compound nouns:
dry-cleaning, jack-in-the-box, toothpaste, haircut, output, ice cream, potato chip
9) Countable nouns
A countable noun (also known as a count noun) is one that you can count. When you have three
books or 10 pennies, you are describing a noun that is countable.
countable nouns:
table, apple, rabbit, ear
Nouns make up the majority of the English language. More nouns appear every year as people come
up with new ideas, media, and technologies. However, a noun’s basic function never changes. It is a
person, place, or thing, and it may be one or more of the types of nouns that we all know and love.
