The Early Life Of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the second child of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He was born
in a log house in Kentucky. The Lincoln family was of moderate level of prosperity. They were a
responsible family.
When Abraham was a child, the family moved from Kentucky to Perry County, Indiana, in 1817,
because of a land dispute in Kentucky. In Indiana, they dwelled on public land that they eventually
bought.
When Abraham was 9 years old, his mother passed away due to milk sickness. It was very
devastating. He had worked hard at an early age. Then his father married Sarah Bush Johnston, a
widow with three children. Sarah was very affectionate and she and Abraham quickly bonded.
Sarah encouraged Abraham to read. She led him to read until he began his formal education. Some
people witnessed how Abraham walked hundreds of miles to borrow books because books in
Indiana were rare at that time.

Pendawa has read the blurb above and is calling up the company to make enquiries about the
product.
Mr. Bone : Good afternoon. What can I do for you?
Pendawa : Good afternoon. I’m interested in the VCD Anne Frank by Jenniver Rosenberg.
Could you please tell me if the VCD shows the true life of Anne Frank? I need the information to
teach about a biography to my students.
Mr.Bone : Yes. It contains useful information during the two years and one month Anne Frank
spent hiding in a Secret Annex in Amsterdam during World War II. After watching the VCD, you
will know better both the tensions and difficulties of living in such a confined space for that long a
duration as well as Anne’s struggles with becoming a teenager
Pendawa : How much does it cost?
Mr.Bone : It costs Rp 150.000. Would you like to order?
Pendawa : What should I do if I want to order on line?
Mr.Bone : It’s very easy. You can visit our web and fill in the online order form.
Pendawa : Thank you very much for your information.
Mr.Bone : You’re welcome.

6. Listen and correct the numbers.

For her thirteenth birthday on 12 June 1942, Anne Frank received a book she had shown her father
in a shop window a few days earlier. Although it was an autograph book, bound with red-and-white
checkered cloth and with a small lock on the front, Frank decided she would use it as a diary, and
began writing in it almost immediately. While many of her early entries relate the mundane aspects
of her life, she also discussed some of the changes that had taken place in the Netherlands since the
German occupation. In her entry dated 20 June 1942, she listed many of the restrictions that had
been placed upon the lives of the Dutch Jewish population, and also notes her sorrow at the death
of her grandmother earlier in the year. Frank dreamed about becoming an actress. She loved
watching movies, but the Dutch Jews were forbidden access to movie theaters from 8 January 1941
onwards.

Man : He comes from South Africa. He is a South African politician.
Woman : I’ve never heard about him. What did he do?
Man : He fought for the rights of his people in South Africa.

people politically. He went against the South African government who kept their
policy of apartheid. He wanted to free South African without violence.
Woman : That’s awesome.
Man : Yes, and because of this he was put in prison for over 26 years. Eventually, his
fight was successful. He becomes the first native president of South Africa.
Woman : Tell me much about him.
Man :Why don’t you search his biography on the internet?
Woman : Oh, that’s a great idea. Let’s go to the library.

Admiral Keumalahayati

Admiral Keumalahayati was the first woman in the world who

became an admiral. There has not been en exact annotation about when she
was born or passed away. However, it was estimated that her life was from
the end of the 15th century until the beginning of 16th century.
Admiral Kemalahayati was born and raised in an admiral family.
Both her father and grandfather were admirals. Both of them had a big
influence on Keumalahayati’s personality. Thus, although she is a woman,
Keumalahayati wanted to be a brave sailor as her father and grandfather.
When she was adolescent, she registered for Mahad Baitul Makdis
Military Academy. She was accepted in this academy and could take her
military education very well. Even, she completed the academy with a great
result.
The story of Admiral Keumalahayati’s struggle when a war in
Malacca Strait territorial water broke out, it was between the Portuguesse
troops and the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. The battle happened in Haru
Bay and was won by Aceh armada. However, Admiral Kemalahayati’s

husband died in the battle. After the death of her husband, she vowed to
continue her husband’s fight.
She then formed an Aceh Armada that all of the troops were widows
whose husbands died in the Haru Bay War. The armada was called Inong
Balee in which Keumalahayati appointed as the admiral. After holding
position as the admiral, Keumalahayati coordinated her troops on the sea,
controlled various harbours such as Syahbandar, and controlled the galley
ship of the Sultan Darussalam.
Later on, Keumalahayati was involved in a battle against the Dutch
in 1958. In the battle, she killed Cournelis de Houtman and arrested his
brother Frederick de Houtman. Admiral Keumalahayati’s success was an
astonishing achievement.
As the appreciation of her struggle, a movie series title “Laksamana
Keumalahayati” had been made by Indonesia Minister for Youth and
Sports Affairs in 2007. Conclusion

9. Read the following passage.

Martha Christina Tiahahu: The ‘kabaressi’ heroine of Maluku
While Raden Ajeng Kartini is known as a heroine of women’s emancipation, other
national heroines were freedom fighters, such as Cut Nyak Dien of Aceh. In Maluku, a brave
young woman took up arms along with her male peers against colonizers of the Dutch era. She
was Martha Christina Tiahahu.
Christina was born in Abubu village, Nusalaut Island, on January 24, 1800. At the age of
17, she joined the guerrilla unit commanded by her father, Kapitan Paulus Tiahahu, in the
resistance movement on Nusalaut Island. Their unit also backed Kapitan Pattimura, who led
the People’s Army on Saparua Island in the Waisisil War against the Dutch.
Christina fought in several battles, including the one on Saparua Island in which Dutch
commander Richement was killed. Commander Meyer, who replaced Richement, was shot in
the neck during the same battle, and the resistance forged ahead until Vermeulen Kringer took
over command of Dutch troops in the war in Maluku.
Along with her father and other freedom fighters, including Kapitan Pattimura, Christina
was captured and carried aboard the Dutch ship Eversten. All prisoners were punished except
Christina, who was released owing to her age. Her father, Kapitan Paulus Tiahahu, and several
other Maluku fighters were sentenced to death.
On October 16, 1817, Christina and her father were taken to Nusalaut. They were held at
Fort Beverwijk on the island, pending Paulus’ execution. After her father’s death, Christina
vanished into the forest and lived in the wild.
In a sweep launched by the Dutch in December 1817, Christina and 39 other Maluku
people were arrested and transported aboard the Eversten to Java, where they were to serve
under forced labor at coffee plantations. During the journey, Christina’s health declined. She
rejected food and refused medical treatment. She passed away on January 2, 1818, at sea and
her body was dumped into the Banda Sea.
Following independence, the Indonesian government declared the Maluku freedom fighter
a national heroine, and her death anniversary on January 2 is commemorated as Martha
Christina Tiahahu Day. On that day, thousands of flower petals are cast into the Banda Sea in
an official ceremony organized annually to celebrate her courage in the struggle for Indonesia’s
freedom.
Because of the great courage she showed in countering Dutch firearms with only stones,
the Maluku community calls her a kabaressi or valiant woman.
