Born in East London, Beckham was raised in a family of Manchester United supporters, with both his parents
traveling to Old Trafford from London to see the team's matches, often taking young David with them. Getting
the taste of soccer, David started playing for the Ridgeway Rovers, a youth team coached by his father and
Steve Kirby.
Although taking part at several trials at the Manchester United youth facilities, he had some
tries at his local club, Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur, however he would come back to the
Manchester United youth in 1991.
After playing there for 1 year and winning the FA Youth Cup with the team, David Beckham was given the
chance to play for Manchester's first squad, in a League Cup game against Brighton and Hove Albion, which
would be his first appearance as a professional soccer player.
When he was just 19 years of age, Beckham was still not a first team regular for Manchester, so in the
1994/95 season he was loaned to Preston North End, where he would get some useful match experience before
returning to United the next season.
The end of the 1994/95 season saw several key components of the Manchester United first squad
leaving the team or retiring and Sir Alex Ferguson, the team's manager decided to base his strategy for the next
season on youngsters instead of buying expensive replacements. This was a great chance for David Beckham
and he took it with both hands as he would become a first team regular from now on.

England squad for the 1998 World Cup, however this would be one of the toughest moments in Beckham's

New York's extremely rapid commercial growth may be partly attributed to Gov. De Witt Clinton, who pushed through
the construction of the Erie Canal (Buffalo to Albany), which was opened in 1825. Today, the 641-mile Gov. Thomas E.

highways. Two toll-free superhighways, the Adirondack Northway (linking Albany with the Canadian border) and the
North-South Expressway (crossing central New York from the Pennsylvania border to the Thousand Islands), have been
opened.
The great metropolis of New York City is the nerve center of the nation. It is a leader in manufacturing, foreign trade,
commerce and banking, book and magazine publishing, and theatrical production. A leading seaport, its John F. Kennedy

When day dawned, but before the sun had risen, their mother awoke Gretel and Hansel, saying, "Get up, you sluggards.
We are going into the forest to fetch wood." She gave each a little piece of bread, and said, "There is something for your
dinner, but do not eat it up before then, for you will get nothing else."
Gretel took the bread under her apron, as Hansel had the pebbles in his pocket. Then they all set out together on the
way to the forest.
When they had walked a short time, Hansel stood still and peeped back at the house, and did so again and again. His
father said, "Hansel, what are you looking at there and staying behind for? Pay attention, and do not forget how to use
your legs."
"Ah, father," said Hansel, "I am looking at my little white cat, which is sitting up on the roof, and wants to say good-
bye to me."
The wife said, "Fool, that is not your little cat, that is the morning sun which is shining on the chimneys."
Hansel, however, had not been looking back at the cat, but had been constantly throwing one of the white pebble-
stones out of his pocket on the road.
When they had reached the middle of the forest, the father said, "Now, children, pile up some wood, and I will light a
fire that you may not be cold."
Hansel and Gretel gathered brushwood together, as high as a little hill. The brushwood was lighted, and when the
flames were burning very high, the woman said, "Now, children, lay yourselves down by the fire and rest, we will go into
the forest and cut some wood. When we have done, we will come back and fetch you away."
Hansel and Gretel sat by the fire, and when noon came, each ate a little piece of bread, and as they heard the strokes of
the wood-axe they believed that their father was near. It was not the axe, however, but a branch which he had fastened to
a withered tree which the wind was blowing backwards and forwards. And as they had been sitting such a long time, their
eyes closed with fatigue, and they fell fast asleep.

Nobody likes paying taxes. Even those who know that taxation is necessary and just are reluctant to pay taxes. It
is not pleasant to see part of your monthly income taken away from your income tax. Ignorant people think this is
injustice and make grievance of it .
Every country must have a government. The primary duties of a government are to protect the life and property
of the citizens, to maintain law and order, and settle dispute between citizens in a just and orderly way through the law-
courts, to defend the country from foreign foes and to maintain the roads and highways. Besides, many governments
maintain and direct education, provide hospitals for the sick and attend to sanitation. All these great public duties need
money: an army and navy have to be kept up, the police force and the judges have to be paid.

Furthermore, schools and teachers have to be provided and supported; health experts – officer and sanitary
engineers have to be employed. Now where is all from? For the benefits of the public. It is the people as a whole, rich and
poor that benefit by security of life and property, by the sound roads by public hospital, public school and good
sanitation. Therefore, it is only right that the public, the individual citizens of the country should contribute the money

A fog is a cloud in contact with ground. There is no basic difference between a fog and a cloud floating high in the
atmosphere. When a cloud is near or on the surface of the earth or sea, it is simply called “fog”.
The commonest fogs are those seen at night and in the early morning over the lowlands and small bodies of water.
They usually are caused by a cold current of air from above striking down upon the warmer surface of the land or water.
In the autumn they are very common, because the air is cooling faster day by day than the land or the water. On still
nights after dark, thin layers of fog often form close to the ground in low places. As the earth cools at night, the lower air
gets cooler. Where this cooler air meets the moist warmer air just above, fog forms.
As a general rule, city fogs are much thicker than country fogs. City air is full of dust and soot that mingle with tiny
particles of water to form a thicker blanket.
The reason fogs often seem denser than clouds is that the droplets are smaller in a fog. A large number of small drops
absorb more light than a smaller number of large drops (as found in clouds), and thus it seems denser to us.
A. Fog.
B. Cloud.
C. Season.
D. Weather.
E. Climate.
A. unmoving

Death penalty still becomes a controversial issue in the US. The American Civil Liberties Union believes the death
penalty inherently violates the constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantees of due process
of law and of equal protection under the law. Those who are against the capital punishment also state that it is an
intolerable denial of civil liberties, and is inconsistent with the fundamental values of our democratic system.
However, there is a difference between murder and execution. The distinction is that the first is unlawful
and undeserved, the second is a lawful and deserved punishment for an unlawful act. By committing the crime,
the criminal volunteered to assume the risk of receiving a legal punishment that he could have avoided by not
committing the crime. The punishment he suffers is the punishment he voluntarily risked suffering and,
therefore, it is no more unjust to him than any other event for which one knowingly volunteers to assume the
risk.
Our resolve to end crime is only as strong as the laws we pass to punish criminals. By making the death penalty the
law of the land in New York, we have demonstrated that resolve, thus strengthening the promise that our children and
future generations will grow up in a state that is free of violence.

In this modern area, there are still some parents who are hesitant about sending their daughters to
college. The narrow attitude shown to women’s education is largely due to the traditional role of women in
society. A woman is expected to be a wife and a mother. Most parents believe that if their daughter gets
married and does not pursue a career but instead chooses to be a housewife, then the higher education will be a
waste. However, an educated woman is not only a better wife but also contributes to society.
Nowadays, more and more women are successfully combining career and marriage. Educated women
are richer both emotionally and financially. They are able to find an outlet outside the drudgery monotony of
their homes. They bring more satisfaction and contentment to their lives.
Depriving girls of higher education is crass discrimination. Times have changed; modern’s society
needs the talents of its people regardless of gender. Today, women work alongside men. In fact, in the last few
decades, women have made outstanding contributions to society.
TO-UN/MKKS/BHS.INNGRIS-A/SMA /2008-2009 Halaman 23 dari 103 halaman
Women should be giving the freedom to be educated whether or not they get married or go to work after
finishing their education because it is only through education that a woman will find herself useful and discover
what she wants in life. A woman who work is not an insult to her husband. Conversely, her husband should feel
proud of her achievements since marriage is actually an equal partnership.
Therefore, parents should not think that girls should receive less education just because they will get
married one day.
If you want to advance in your career, you will have to make some careful decisions about which jobs to
take. Evaluate a job offer for the value it has to your career. It may mean sacrifice at first. You may have to
move to a different region or a different country to get a job that is right for you. You may have to work late
hours, at least temporarily. You might even have to take lower salary for a job that offers you the experience
that you need. But you should never accept a job if it is not related to your career goals.
Accepting a job that is not within your career path will not give you the training or experience you need
or want. You will find yourself frustrated in such a position and consequently will not perform your best. This
will have an effect on the people around you who will not feel as if you are being part of the team. The best
advice is to think carefully before accepting any position and make sure that job is the one you want to have.

I’d like to get ticket for our entire department to see” hamlet”. If everyone goes, there will be
just enough people for a 10% percent discount on a ticket price. Would you call the box office
to find out how to order the group discount tickets, and see if you can get tickets for the opening
night? Make sure they are orchestra seats. I think this will be and enjoyable and convenient
outing for everyone. We can all take the subway to the theater together after work.
Thanks,

BANDUNG: Thousand of people who had fled from their houses located on the slopes of
smoldering Mount Gamkomora on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, could return to their
homes after authorities downgraded the volcano’s top-alert status Monday.
The head of the volcano logy Canter and Geology Disaster Mitigation Agency, Surono, said that the
returning residents still could not get in within three kilometers area of the volcano in ibu district, West
Halmahera regency.
The alert status for the volcano was downgraded because the volcano had shown less volcanic
activity . Since July 10 to July 15, only two small tectonic quakes measuring below 2 of the Richter
scale were recorded in the mountain and the volcano did not burst out hot lava or other volcanic
material from its carter.
“Compared to the last Monday explosions wherein the ash spewed was 4.000 above the creator , it
is now only about ten meters high,” Surono told the journalists in Bandung on Monday.
Following the volcanoes increasing activity last week, which led authorities to put in the top alert
status, around 10.000 residents in ibu district fled to safety. Most of the residents were taking shelter in
South Ibu and central Ibu districts .
Surono warned the people not to get close to the volcano because small emissions of smoke could
throw materials from volcanoes’ crater.
The 1,635 meter volcano has erupted 12 times since records have been kept. The last time ash and
smoke streamed out of the volcano was in 1987. No casualties were reported.

For many years , people have believed that the animal after man were the chimpanzees. Now
however , there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
Although a dolphin lives in the sea. It is not a fish. It is a mammal .It is in many ways , there fore
like a human being.
Dolphins have a simple language . They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for men
to learn how to talk to dolphin. But this will not be easy because dolphin can not hear the kind of
sound man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language
which both he and the dolphins can understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They often follow ships. There are many stories abput
dolphins guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.

Solar energy is one great alternative for future energy sources. It is environmentally friendly and is
renewable, thus making it an excellent energy source. According to the united states environmental
protection agency (EPA) : enough sunlight reaches the earth’s surface very year to produced by burning all
fossil fuels mined and extracted during the same time period.
As with most renewable energy systems, the initial costs of setting up these solar energy projects is
quite expensive. However, the savings on electricity bill in the long-term should make up for this and year
after year, the costs of theses solar energy are falling which will make it more affordable and widespread
Solar energy will also be powering some 70.0000 homes and several hundred businesses in Britain soon
after the government announced a 10 million investment into photovoltaic (PV ) technologies over the next
three years.
Photovoltaic cells provide an unlimited supply of free power by converting sunlight into electricity
using modern semiconductors. Vast arrays of these cells will be placed on roofs and walls around the
country to provide buildings with a renewable source of energy for lighting, heating and storage
Street lighting and traffic signals can also benefit from this power supply further reducing our
dependence on fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

While most of funeral ceremonies in Indonesia have followed the way of modern religions. Some tribes
in Indonesia still practice traditional funerals. Manggarai people of Flores, in the southeast part of
Indonesia, (people are Austroloid, not mongoloid by race) believe that the spirits of the dead, called Poti,
stay where they used to stay when they were alive, especially near the bed. After sometime, the Poti move
to wells, big trees or crossroads near the house.
They watch their grandchildren, but don’t disturb the living people. After five days, the Poti will go to
Mori Kraeng, the place for the dead. Manggarai people believe that everything in Mori Karaeng is opposite
of that in the world of the living. People break dishes and glasses on the fifth day so that the poti will have
the dishes and glasses in good condition at Mori Karaeng.

Henry Hudson (1965-16110) was an English explorer and navigator who explored part of
the Arctic Ocean and northeastern North America. Employed by Holland, he made trips to find
a waterway from Europe to India.
In 1969, on a trip in a ship called Half Moon Hudson found what is now called the Hudson
River. He also discovered Manhattan Island. The Dutch then built a settlement there and
called it New Amsterdam. A governor was appointed, a one legend Dutchman, called Peter
Stuyvesant. This was too much provocation for the English settlers. A fleet sent by James,
Duke of York, sailed from England and anchored off New Amsterdam. The town gave in
without firing a short although the governor did all he could to make his memo fight. Later, its
name was changed from “New Amsterdam” to New York” to honor the royal duke who had
financed the invasion.
Hudson sailed into New York’s harbor on September 3, 1609 and note what an excellent harbor
it was. He sailed up the river about 150 miles (240 km) and noted the abundance of rich land,
but realized that this was not a waterway to India.
Hudson died in 1611 after his crew mutinied and left Hudson, his son, and seven crew members
a drift in a smal6, open boat in Hudson Bay.
It happened on Sunday morning a few days ago. When I was about to have my routine
coffee along with a bagel. I realized that I did not have any bread at all. I have to admit that I
am unable to enjoy coffee without s some kind of backed goods.
Then I decide to buy something, but all the stores were closed, but one. That stores that
not have any fresh pastries, and I ended up buying four slices or wheat bread. I was frustrated
for two reasons. Firstly, I couldn’t enjoy my coffee on Sunday morning and secondly the sales
woman charged me $ 3.00 for four slices of bread. Next I returned to the building where I lived
on the tenth floor, step into the elevator, pushed the button and got out. When I reached my
apartment I tried to unlock the door, I could not turn the key. I made a a few attempts without
success. I started banging on the door hoping to wake up my daughter. I was not ser of the
successful at that either. I can’t explain how it crossed my mind to check the number of the
apartment was correct, except for the first digit for the apartment was on the ninth floor, but the
tenth. I was shocked to realized that I had been banging on somebody else’s door. I still muse
over what I might have opened if somebody has opened the door and what he or she would
have said to me at 8.00 am on Sunday morning.

My first Job
Being very short of money and wanting to do something useful, I applied for a teaching post advertised at a
school in a suburb of London and three days later a letter arrived, summoning me to Croydon for an interview.
I went to Croydon by train and then I had to walk a dusty street at least a quarter of a mile. As a result of
this journey, I arrived on a hot June morning too desperate to feel nervous.
Two years ago John Smith accompanied , not only by his wife, but also by his two children,
set out from London to drive to Singapore . Along the Asian highway(travel publication Ltd) is an
account of his adventures.
The first part of the journey across Europe, described in a chapter called “travelling
hopefully”. Was not difficult. Their problem did not begin until they reached Turkey and began the
long overland trip through Iran, Afghanistan , Nepal, Pakistan and Burma.
The main difficulties we. re bad roads, and in some places, a shortage of water. The car
broke down many times and on two occasion had to be towed more than a hundred miles to be
nearest town. In Nepal, where the road was little more than a mountain track, the car was involved in
an accident and the family had to say 150 miles away in Katmandu for a week while the damage was
repaired.
The Smith took with them food and camping equipment. Although this extra weight
probably caused many problems of breakdowns, John Smith believed that he was right to be
prepared to eat and to sleep anywhere. “Good health,” he writes” is the most important thing on a
trip like this. You can not stay healthy unless you eat and sleep well.
Along the Asian highway is a well-written and continuously interesting story: a record of
the courage and an endurance of an ordinary family who took the most extraordinary holiday.

metal stairs to get to the cave , because the cave was embedded into a small mountain. The cave was famous
for tis primitive cave wall paintings which were some hand print
S and wild boar in paintings. The cave and its surroundings were turned into a national park, so it was taken
care of.
Next stop was a place near the cave where some seashells littered the ground and some
where actually piled into a big mound! The guide said that these piles of seashells are called
kjokkenmoddinger , or kitchen trash. The human who lives here ate from the shells and dumped leftovers in
their “ kitchen”.
We also visited a small museum where they have skeleton of human who lived in the
caves. The skeleton along with some roughly made jewelry and weapons where place inside the glass cases for

Unfortunately, I sprained my ankle one week before departure, which frustrated me beyond my

course, the ankle could not heal completely in a few days, so I had not choice but to just try my best and
have my ankle taped when I played in matches.
We played against teams from Thailand, Mongolia, and Malaysia. The most difficult and

To improve the comfort and cleanliness at our school , a numbers of dustbins bin should be increased.
When we looked at classroom , school corridors and school yard s there are papers , mineral water cups , straws
and napkins here and there. The conditions of cleanliness and discomfort really hinders learning and teaching
environment. Litters thrown carelessly , cause diseases, especially empty plastic cups or glasses . They can be
filled out with water coming from the rain. This can be placeless for dengue mosquitoes to spread out.
Besides , this rubbish can deteriorate the scene. Well-painted wall and green school yard do not mean
anything if litters are scattered everywhere.
I notice that most of the students in our school has responsibilities for their school environment. They
put their litters on the proper places. But some are not diligent enough to find the dustbins. The number of
dustbin in our school is not enough. Most of the dustbin should be put beside each of steps , outside the
classroom and some more along the corridors. Probably one dustbin should be in every ten meters . When
students want to throw away their litters , they can find the dustbin easily.
When school is equipped with sufficient dustbins, we do not have problems of filth and discomfort
anymore. Our school will be very clean and become a nice place to study.

Students’ cheating
Student’s cheating is one of the biggest problems faced by the teachers nowadays. Despite the fact that
the teachers advice their students not to do dishonest acts during tests, some students still do cheating. There
are many kinds of cheating that students do during the test examination, such as looking other student’s work,
put some notes under their clothes, write notes or formulas on their desks make hand signals or go to the rest
room to get the answer from their friends .
In my point of view . Students heat deteriorate who do cheating are committing a crime . It is a sort of
taking something illegally. This crime causes negative result to the students. Students who always cheat
deteriorate their mental capacity . Cheating acts also create dependence . They weaken their sel confidence .
Therefore , school should consider cheating as a very serious problem. School board and administration
should go hand to overcome this matter. Honestly must be put in school’s vision. Harsh punishment must
applied to students who commit this crime.

Many people say that examinations should be abolished because they are
not the best measure of students’ capabilities. These people believe that
students can study on their own and do better without the nagging worry and
pressure exerted by examinations.
Yet ,there are persuasive reasons to show the examinations should not be
abolished. It is in sufficient that teachers assign homework and correct it.
Because this is not done under supervision, they can not be sure that it is
really the work of the students themselves. Moreover, homework is not a test
of students’ ability; homework is more a method of merely keeping him of
occupied.
Nowadays, in the hunt for jobs, students need to produce some evidence of
their capabilities. Prospective employers like to see copies of examinations
results; this is the only way a student’s qualifications can be judge. This
attitude greatly encourages the use of examination, if not making them a
necessity.

To reach Kudus first of all we passed the free way in Semarang. It was at about 2 p.m. Then, we arrived there at

doing prays, we walked to the tombs not far from the mosque. We saw the longest and the biggest tombs we
had ever seen there. Unfortunately, we didn’t spend a lot of time there because we wanted to arrive in Kudus
before dark.
We arrived in Kudus at about 5 p.m. we led to a hotel and soon took a shower. After that we had dinner
in a food stall on the road side. It sold tempe and tahu penyet. We were eating our meals while enjoying the

TEXT 3 :
Learning English
Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure
with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English
project.
Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language
learning. Firstly "the song stuck in my head" phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the
last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and
sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on
our short - and- long term memory.
Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of
repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are
effective makes them many times more motivating other text. Although usually simple, some
songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the
same ways as any other literary sample.
Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop
songs and probably many other types don't have precise people, place or time reference. In
addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within
oneself and within one group. little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture,
religion, patriotism and yeas, even revolution.
Last but no least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as
studying grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning
vocabulary spelling and culture. From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that
learning through music and songs, learningEnglish can be enjoyable and fun.

School for Toddlers
Believe it or not, under the childcare Bill in London as reported by BBC, child- minders would teach
children from birth. However, a member of the Teacher-Parent Association described this child curriculum as
“crazy”.
It was reported that children as young as three years old in England Childcare Centers were taught
rudimentary math, language and literacy. There are even many countries where children start to attend
nursery as young as two years old. The nursery is equipped with qualified trainers to teach the toddlers basic
personal hygiene, such as brushing teeth and socializing with their peers. They also learn some very basic
greetings, letters, words and figures. Trainers use toys and music in their teaching.
However, a spokesman for the Teacher-Parent Association said that taking away children’s childhood
as soon as they left maternity ward was dangerous and absolutely mad.
This system has been going on for more than a decade and continues to expand rapidly. Parents find this
system not only helpful for their young ones but that it also provides some leeway for them to attend to
urgent matters. Therefore, to say the children are in danger of being deprived of their childhood as soon as
they leave maternity ward is an overstatement.
50. Which of the following statements is not true according to the text?
a. BBC says childminders would teach children from birth.
b. Children as young as three years old were taught, language and literacy.
c. The nursery is a place for children to work.
d. Trainers use toys and music in their teaching.
e. In some countries, parents send their children to school at the age of two.
