Born in East London, Beckham was raised in a family of Manchester United supporters, with both his parents
traveling to Old Trafford from London to see the team's matches, often taking young David with them. Getting
the taste of soccer, David started playing for the Ridgeway Rovers, a youth team coached by his father and
Steve Kirby.
Although taking part at several trials at the Manchester United youth facilities, he had some
tries at his local club, Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur, however he would come back to the
Manchester United youth in 1991.
After playing there for 1 year and winning the FA Youth Cup with the team, David Beckham was given the
chance to play for Manchester's first squad, in a League Cup game against Brighton and Hove Albion, which
would be his first appearance as a professional soccer player.
When he was just 19 years of age, Beckham was still not a first team regular for Manchester, so in the
1994/95 season he was loaned to Preston North End, where he would get some useful match experience before
returning to United the next season.
The end of the 1994/95 season saw several key components of the Manchester United first squad
leaving the team or retiring and Sir Alex Ferguson, the team's manager decided to base his strategy for the next
season on youngsters instead of buying expensive replacements. This was a great chance for David Beckham
and he took it with both hands as he would become a first team regular from now on.
Constantly rising in form and playing better and better for Manchester helped David Beckham reach the
England squad for the 1998 World Cup, however this would be one of the toughest moments in Beckham's

When day dawned, but before the sun had risen, their mother awoke Gretel and Hansel, saying, "Get up, you sluggards.
We are going into the forest to fetch wood." She gave each a little piece of bread, and said, "There is something for your
dinner, but do not eat it up before then, for you will get nothing else."
Gretel took the bread under her apron, as Hansel had the pebbles in his pocket. Then they all set out together on the
way to the forest.
When they had walked a short time, Hansel stood still and peeped back at the house, and did so again and again. His
father said, "Hansel, what are you looking at there and staying behind for? Pay attention, and do not forget how to use
your legs."
"Ah, father," said Hansel, "I am looking at my little white cat, which is sitting up on the roof, and wants to say good-
bye to me."
The wife said, "Fool, that is not your little cat, that is the morning sun which is shining on the chimneys."
Hansel, however, had not been looking back at the cat, but had been constantly throwing one of the white pebble-
stones out of his pocket on the road.
When they had reached the middle of the forest, the father said, "Now, children, pile up some wood, and I will light a
fire that you may not be cold."
Hansel and Gretel gathered brushwood together, as high as a little hill. The brushwood was lighted, and when the
flames were burning very high, the woman said, "Now, children, lay yourselves down by the fire and rest, we will go into
the forest and cut some wood. When we have done, we will come back and fetch you away."
Hansel and Gretel sat by the fire, and when noon came, each ate a little piece of bread, and as they heard the strokes of
the wood-axe they believed that their father was near. It was not the axe, however, but a branch which he had fastened to
a withered tree which the wind was blowing backwards and forwards. And as they had been sitting such a long time, their
eyes closed with fatigue, and they fell fast asleep.

Nobody likes paying taxes. Even those who know that taxation is necessary and just are reluctant to pay taxes. It

A fog is a cloud in contact with ground. There is no basic difference between a fog and a cloud floating high in the
atmosphere. When a cloud is near or on the surface of the earth or sea, it is simply called “fog”.
The commonest fogs are those seen at night and in the early morning over the lowlands and small bodies of water.
They usually are caused by a cold current of air from above striking down upon the warmer surface of the land or water.
In the autumn they are very common, because the air is cooling faster day by day than the land or the water. On still
nights after dark, thin layers of fog often form close to the ground in low places. As the earth cools at night, the lower air
gets cooler. Where this cooler air meets the moist warmer air just above, fog forms.
As a general rule, city fogs are much thicker than country fogs. City air is full of dust and soot that mingle with tiny
particles of water to form a thicker blanket.
The reason fogs often seem denser than clouds is that the droplets are smaller in a fog. A large number of small drops
absorb more light than a smaller number of large drops (as found in clouds), and thus it seems denser to us.

39. What is the text about?

Death penalty still becomes a controversial issue in the US. The American Civil Liberties Union believes the death
penalty inherently violates the constitutional ban against cruel and unusual punishment and the guarantees of due process
of law and of equal protection under the law. Those who are against the capital punishment also state that it is an
intolerable denial of civil liberties, and is inconsistent with the fundamental values of our democratic system.
However, there is a difference between murder and execution. The distinction is that the first is unlawful
and undeserved, the second is a lawful and deserved punishment for an unlawful act. By committing the crime,
the criminal volunteered to assume the risk of receiving a legal punishment that he could have avoided by not
committing the crime. The punishment he suffers is the punishment he voluntarily risked suffering and,
therefore, it is no more unjust to him than any other event for which one knowingly volunteers to assume the
risk.
Our resolve to end crime is only as strong as the laws we pass to punish criminals. By making the death penalty the
law of the land in New York, we have demonstrated that resolve, thus strengthening the promise that our children and
future generations will grow up in a state that is free of violence.

43. What is the best title of the text?

A. Civil liberty.
B. Human right.
C. Death penalty.

C. death penalty is against human right.

E. By exposing the danger of crimes.

Weather is the physical condition of the atmosphere at a particular time. It includes temperature, air
pressure and water content.

Text for number 38 to 40

In this modern area, there are still some parents who are hesitant about sending their daughters to
college. The narrow attitude shown to women’s education is largely due to the traditional role of women in
society. A woman is expected to be a wife and a mother. Most parents believe that if their daughter gets
married and does not pursue a career but instead chooses to be a housewife, then the higher education will be a
waste. However, an educated woman is not only a better wife but also contributes to society.
Nowadays, more and more women are successfully combining career and marriage. Educated women
are richer both emotionally and financially. They are able to find an outlet outside the drudgery monotony of
their homes. They bring more satisfaction and contentment to their lives.
Depriving girls of higher education is crass discrimination. Times have changed; modern’s society
needs the talents of its people regardless of gender. Today, women work alongside men. In fact, in the last few
decades, women have made outstanding contributions to society.
TO-UN/MKKS/BHS.INNGRIS-A/SMA /2008-2009 Halaman 23 dari 103 halaman
Women should be giving the freedom to be educated whether or not they get married or go to work after
finishing their education because it is only through education that a woman will find herself useful and discover
what she wants in life. A woman who work is not an insult to her husband. Conversely, her husband should feel
proud of her achievements since marriage is actually an equal partnership.
Therefore, parents should not think that girls should receive less education just because they will get
married one day.

If you want to advance in your career, you will have to make some careful decisions about which jobs to
take. Evaluate a job offer for the value it has to your career. It may mean sacrifice at first. You may have to
move to a different region or a different country to get a job that is right for you. You may have to work late
hours, at least temporarily. You might even have to take lower salary for a job that offers you the experience
that you need. But you should never accept a job if it is not related to your career goals.
Accepting a job that is not within your career path will not give you the training or experience you need
or want. You will find yourself frustrated in such a position and consequently will not perform your best. This
will have an effect on the people around you who will not feel as if you are being part of the team. The best
advice is to think carefully before accepting any position and make sure that job is the one you want to have.

Infotainment Programs: Pro and Contra

Do you like news which reveals the life of celebrities? If you do, then you must enjoy watching
infotainment programs on TV. Many people condemn the content of the infotainment programs. However, the
TV ratings show that an infotainment program is one of the ‘most watched’ TV programs.
People who fond of infotainment programs believe that the content of infotainment program are based
on the fact and can encourage celebrities to do positive things in public. They also believe that journalists of
these programs always try to find the truth behind the gossip. Moreover, celebrities need such programs to
promote their profile. These programs give a room for mutual needs: reporters and celebrities. Reporters need
the story, while celebrities need fame.
Nevertheless, there are also some people who strongly object to the good point of infotainment
programs. They say that infotainment programs are merely about slandering another person. Sometimes, the
program goes too far into the private lives of people. For example, gossips about a divorce or about someone
cheating on his/her spouse often become the headlines. The worst thing is, sometimes, the stories are reported
without firstly seeking the information or confirmation from the person involved in the stories.
So far, infotainment programs have become a dilemma for some viewers. On one hand, these programs
can run stories on how celebrities build their career and how they feel about being famous, but on the other
hand, these programs also bring terrible consequences, especially for celebrities whose private lives are
scrutinized.

44. The text above mainly discusses about ….

A. The controversy of infotainment programs
B. The positive sides of infotainment programs
C. The negative effects of infotainment programs
D. The reasons of airing infotainment programs
E. The reasons of rejecting the infotainment programs

A. The positive side of the infotainment program is it runs news of people’s
B. It is not important to search information from the person involved in the story
C. All people agree with the infotainment program because it is very entertaining
D. Even though many viewers dislike the content of the infotainment program, it still has high rating
E. There is no good point in the infotainment program, so it is better to ban the program as soon as
possible

46. The argument ‘against’ point can be found in paragraph ….

A. One
B. Two
C. Three
D. Four
E. Five

47. What is the difference between paragraphs two and three ?

A. Both paragraphs talk about the negative effects of infotainment programs
B. Both paragraphs talk about positive sides of infotainment programs
C. Paragraphs two talk about negative sides of infotainment programs and paragraph three talk about the
positive sides
D. Paragraphs two talk about positive sides of infotainment programs and paragraph three talk about the

TEXT 3
An eclipse of the sun is also called a solar eclipse. The moon orbits or goes around the earth. As the
moon orbits, it sometimes gets directly between earth and the sun. when this happens the moon casts its
shadow on earth. The moon shadow covers only a small part of earth, not the entire planet.
There are three kinds of solar eclipses. Sometimes the moon appears to block out the whole sun. this
is called a total solar eclipse. A bright ring or hallow appears around the dark disk of the moon during total
eclipse. The suns corona the glowing hot gases that surround the sun produces this hallow.
Earth can cause a different kind of eclipse, called an eclipse of moon or lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipses
happen when earth gets directly between the sun and the moon. Earth casts a shadow on the moon. You can
see earth’s shadow moving a cross the moon during a lunar eclipse
There are two kinds of lunar eclipses. Sometimes earth’s shadow covers the entire moon. This is
called a total lunar eclipse. Sometimes earth’s shadow falls on only part of the moon. This is called a
partial lunar eclipse. Astronomers are scientists who study things in space. They know exactly when and
where there will be an eclipse. They use math to figure out when eclipses will happen

Solar energy is one great alternative for future energy sources. It is environmentally friendly and is
renewable, thus making it an excellent energy source. According to the united states environmental
protection agency (EPA) : enough sunlight reaches the earth’s surface very year to produced by burning all
fossil fuels mined and extracted during the same time period.
As with most renewable energy systems, the initial costs of setting up these solar energy projects is
quite expensive. However, the savings on electricity bill in the long-term should make up for this and year
after year, the costs of theses solar energy are falling which will make it more affordable and widespread
Solar energy will also be powering some 70.0000 homes and several hundred businesses in Britain soon
after the government announced a 10 million investment into photovoltaic (PV ) technologies over the next
three years.
Photovoltaic cells provide an unlimited supply of free power by converting sunlight into electricity
using modern semiconductors. Vast arrays of these cells will be placed on roofs and walls around the
country to provide buildings with a renewable source of energy for lighting, heating and storage
Street lighting and traffic signals can also benefit from this power supply further reducing our
dependence on fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

While most of funeral ceremonies in Indonesia have followed the way of modern religions. Some tribes
in Indonesia still practice traditional funerals. Manggarai people of Flores, in the southeast part of
Indonesia, (people are Austroloid, not mongoloid by race) believe that the spirits of the dead, called Poti,
stay where they used to stay when they were alive, especially near the bed. After sometime, the Poti move
to wells, big trees or crossroads near the house.
They watch their grandchildren, but don’t disturb the living people. After five days, the Poti will go to
Mori Kraeng, the place for the dead. Manggarai people believe that everything in Mori Karaeng is opposite
of that in the world of the living. People break dishes and glasses on the fifth day so that the poti will have
the dishes and glasses in good condition at Mori Karaeng.

There is a holiday called Labor Thanksgiving Day (Kinro Kansha No Hi) in Japan. It is a national
holiday in Japan and it takes place annually on November 23. It is held as an occasion for commemorating
labor and production and giving one another thanks.
Events are held throughout Japan in this holiday, such as Nagano Labor festival. The event encourages
thinking about the environment, place and human rights. It is not unusual for early grade elementary
students to create drawings for holiday and give them as gifts to local victims or police stations. Labour
thanksgiving day is actually the modern version for an ancient rice harvest festival known as Niiname-Sai,
believed to have been held as long ago as November of 678. traditionally, it celebrated the year’s hard
work; during the Niiname-Sai ceremony, the emperor would dedicate the year’s harvest to Kami (spirits)
and taste the rice for the first time
The modern holiday was established after world war II in 1948 as a day to mark some of the changes of
the post war constitution of Japan, including fundamental human rights and the expansion of workers rights.
Currently Niiname-sai is held privately by the imperial family while Labor thanksgiving day has become a
national holiday

The following question for number 1-4

Henry Hudson (1965-16110) was an English explorer and navigator who explored part of
the Arctic Ocean and northeastern North America. Employed by Holland, he made trips to find
a waterway from Europe to India.

In 1969, on a trip in a ship called Half Moon Hudson found what is now called the Hudson
River. He also discovered Manhattan Island. The Dutch then built a settlement there and
called it New Amsterdam. A governor was appointed, a one legend Dutchman, called Peter
Stuyvesant. This was too much provocation for the English settlers. A fleet sent by James,
Duke of York, sailed from England and anchored off New Amsterdam. The town gave in
without firing a short although the governor did all he could to make his memo fight. Later, its
name was changed from “New Amsterdam” to New York” to honor the royal duke who had
financed the invasion.

Hudson sailed into New York’s harbor on September 3, 1609 and note what an excellent harbor
it was. He sailed up the river about 150 miles (240 km) and noted the abundance of rich land,
but realized that this was not a waterway to India.

Hudson died in 1611 after his crew mutinied and left Hudson, his son, and seven crew members
a drift in a smal6, open boat in Hudson Bay.

My first Job

Being very short of money and wanting to do something useful, I applied for a teaching post advertised at a
school in a suburb of London and three days later a letter arrived, summoning me to Croydon for an interview.
I went to Croydon by train and then I had to walk a dusty street at least a quarter of a mile. As a result of
this journey, I arrived on a hot June morning too desperate to feel nervous.

class. I was rather socked because the teaching set-up appalled me. He told me that I had to split the class up
into three groups and teach them in turn at three different levels. Then he made me come to the thought of

CONTOH SOAL DAN PMBAHASAN

To improve the comfort and cleanliness at our school , a numbers of dustbins bin should be increased.
When we looked at classroom , school corridors and school yard s there are papers , mineral water cups , straws
and napkins here and there. The conditions of cleanliness and discomfort really hinders learning and teaching
environment. Litters thrown carelessly , cause diseases, especially empty plastic cups or glasses . They can be
filled out with water coming from the rain. This can be placeless for dengue mosquitoes to spread out.
Besides , this rubbish can deteriorate the scene. Well-painted wall and green school yard do not mean
anything if litters are scattered everywhere.

I notice that most of the students in our school has responsibilities for their school environment. They
put their litters on the proper places. But some are not diligent enough to find the dustbins. The number of
dustbin in our school is not enough. Most of the dustbin should be put beside each of steps , outside the
classroom and some more along the corridors. Probably one dustbin should be in every ten meters . When
students want to throw away their litters , they can find the dustbin easily.

When school is equipped with sufficient dustbins, we do not have problems of filth and discomfort
anymore. Our school will be very clean and become a nice place to study.

Students’ cheating

Student’s cheating is one of the biggest problems faced by the teachers nowadays. Despite the fact that
the teachers advice their students not to do dishonest acts during tests, some students still do cheating. There
are many kinds of cheating that students do during the test examination, such as looking other student’s work,
put some notes under their clothes, write notes or formulas on their desks make hand signals or go to the rest
room to get the answer from their friends .

In my point of view . Students heat deteriorate who do cheating are committing a crime . It is a sort of
taking something illegally. This crime causes negative result to the students. Students who always cheat
deteriorate their mental capacity . Cheating acts also create dependence . They weaken their sel confidence .

Instead of preparing for the coming test , they are busy to organize notes on apiece of paper. If this awful
continues , the students will lose their opportunity to develop their intellectual and mind.

Many people say that examinations should be abolished because they are
not the best measure of students’ capabilities. These people believe that
students can study on their own and do better without the nagging worry and
pressure exerted by examinations.
Yet ,there are persuasive reasons to show the examinations should not be
abolished. It is in sufficient that teachers assign homework and correct it.
Because this is not done under supervision, they can not be sure that it is
really the work of the students themselves. Moreover, homework is not a test
of students’ ability; homework is more a method of merely keeping him of
occupied.
Nowadays, in the hunt for jobs, students need to produce some evidence of
their capabilities. Prospective employers like to see copies of examinations
results; this is the only way a student’s qualifications can be judge. This
attitude greatly encourages the use of examination, if not making them a
necessity.

TEXT 3 :
Learning English
Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure
with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English
project.
Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language
learning. Firstly "the song stuck in my head" phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the
last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and
sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on
our short - and- long term memory.
Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of
repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are
effective makes them many times more motivating other text. Although usually simple, some
songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the
same ways as any other literary sample.
Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop
songs and probably many other types don't have precise people, place or time reference. In
addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within
oneself and within one group. little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture,
religion, patriotism and yeas, even revolution.
Last but no least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as
studying grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning
vocabulary spelling and culture. From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that
learning through music and songs, learningEnglish can be enjoyable and fun.
