Introduction
English is the most famous and important language in the world. It is an
international language which is spoken by most people in the world. Many scientific
books were printed in English. English is also used in formal or non-formal
communication in the world beside other international languages. For most
Indonesian people, learning English is very important, because by understanding
English well, it will be easier for them to understand any information written in
English. It supports ability for the people to compete in global society. Moreover,
in this globalization era, the interaction of people between countries will be
increased. Domestic workers in Indonesia may cooperate and communicate with
foreign workers. Therefore, English is taught from kindergarten school until
university in Indonesia.
The aim of learning English in vocational high school is preparing students
for working. English in the vocational high school helps students in their future
working. Good mastery of English can be an effective means of increasing the
mastery of science and technology so as to increase the competitiveness of
Indonesian human resources. Language competency based curriculum on 2013 is
focused to improve communication skill including: listening, speaking, reading,
and writing. Then, in order to support those skills, the important element needed is
vocabulary. Mastery of English vocabulary has various aspects, which can be used
as a means to develop knowledge, convey messages, and form words. With good

appears that most students have low English vocabulary mastery and need to be
improved.
Learning vocabulary conventionally is usually done by students by
memorizing words from dictionaries or textbooks. However, this method is often
tedious and in the end students are lazy to do it. This causes students' vocabulary
repertoire is very lacking and hinders their mastery of skills in English. Therefore,
appropriate teaching strategy is needed to increase richness of the students'
English vocabulary. The strategy should be fun enough for students to do and can
be applied at any time, both inside and outside the classroom.
English vocabulary mastery can be improved through continuous listening
activities. Putri (2019) suggested the teachers to play the English music for plenty
of times for their students, then to tell them about the vocabularies which they
have heard. According to previous research by Setia (2022), it was found that
having the habit of listening to English songs were increase students’ English
vocabulary. The vocabulary is obtained from the lyrics of English songs that are
often listened to by students. The influence of songs in vocabulary learning is very
good. From the song can increase vocabulary mastery. Listening to English songs
in daily life can add or affect student’s vocabulary mastery.
According to Lestari (2019), songs are one kind of listening activity that has

broad potential. Music and songs are crucial parts of growing and learning. Some

of the significant characteristics of songs are that they are fun and can keep the

students excited. There are many advantages to using songs in the classroom.

Through using contemporary popular songs, which are already familiar to

teenagers, the teacher can meet the challenges of the teenage needs in the

classroom. Since songs are highly memorable and motivating the students. The

most important feature of songs is repetition. Songs are contained the language

patterns, and also develop listening skills, pronunciation, and rhythm, and provide

a fun atmosphere. In addition, songs are very beneficial types of activities. It can

be used at any stage of a lesson and there are many ways to incorporate them into

a lesson. Sometimes, songs are used just as gap fillers and warm-ups, sometimes

as the main part of a lesson, but sometimes they are there to provide a fun

atmosphere.

Research Methodology
The design of this research is quantitative and the approach using
correlational design. The procedure for implementing this research includes
several stages: preliminary studies, designing research instrument, collecting data,
analyzing data, and concluding. The independent variable of this research is
listening habit to English song and the dependent variable is vocabulary mastery.
Population of this research is all of ten grade students at SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk in
the academic year of 2023-2024, which totaled 84 students, which is divided into

judgment is the class which the average score of the students is the lowest than the
others, it is class X-AKL-2 with the numbers is 28 students.

students (35.7%) from class X at SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk, have fairly good
category of listening habit to English songs. The highest average score of

Apart from that, they also have their favorite English songs in the music player

According to Paksi and Subianto (2020) listening to English music can be a
way for participants to learn English. By singing while looking at the lyric of the
song, participants can learn while singing and recognize the song vocabulary.
Songs are one kind of listening activity that has broad potential. Music and songs
are crucial parts of growing and learning. The most important feature of songs is

maximal score 100. This showed that the average score of the respondents has
reached the minimum class criteria. However, there were still questions that the
majority of respondents failed to answer correctly. In particular, the respondents
made mistakes in identifying the vocabulary "whiny", "punch" and "greatest".

3. Correlation between Students’ Listening Habit to English Song and

Vocabulary Mastery
The results of this research indicated that there is significant correlation
between students’ listening habit to English song and vocabulary mastery of ten
grade students at SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk in the academic year of 2023-2024. The
level of closeness between the habit of listening to English songs and students'
vocabulary mastery is in moderate level.
The results of this research are consistent with several relevant previous
studies. According to research by Listiyaningsih (2017), it is found that English
song can improve listening skill. Listening skill is one of skill in the English
language that should be mastered. People who learn the English language should
master the listening skill. To improve listening skill, people can exercise through
listening English song because listening English song has the benefit to improve
listening skill.
Acording to research by Ali (2020), learning English through listening to
the songs in classroom activities could have positive effect on the listening
comprehension of young learners, provided that the task given to them is in
harmony with their level of proficiency. Comparing the results of the
experimental groups with those of control groups, it shows that the use of songs
has contributed significantly to the improvement of young learners` listening
skills. This is apparent in the noticeably very good performance of experimental
groups in the post-tests. Hence, this result suggests that the experimental groups
who listened to English songs had a better performance than the control groups
who followed the traditional listening content of the curriculum.
