 LATAR BELAKANG
Motivasi diartikan sebagai keadaan dalam pribadi seseorang yang mendorong keinginan dengan
kekuatan atau energi individu untuk melaksanakan suatu kegiatan, baik dari diri sendiri atau dari
luar guna mencapai tujuan.
Menurut Martoyo, (2000:163), motivasi pada dasarnya adalah suatu proses untuk mencoba
mempengaruhi seseorang atau karyawan agar mau melakukan sesuatu yang kita inginkan.
Gray et al dalam Winardi (2002: 2) mendefinisikan motivasi sebagai hasil proses- proses yang
bersifat internal atau eksternal bagi seorang individu, yang menimbulkan sikap entusias dan
persistensi untuk mengikuti arah tindakan-tindakan tertentu. Pendapat kedua pakar tersebut
didukung pula oleh Juwono dalam Setiawan (2005) yang membagi motivasi kedalam 2 jenis,
yakni motivasi internal maupun eksterna
Inti dari definisi motivasi kerja yang telah dikemukakan di atas menyatakan bahwa motivasi kerja
berkaitan erat dengan upaya (effort) yang dikeluarkan seseorang dalam bekerja. Motivasi
merupakan faktor penting dalam mencapai kinerja tinggi.
Kunci dalam prinsip motivasi menyebutkan bahwa kinerja merupakan fungsi dari kemampuan
(ability) dan motivasi.
