Historical perspective

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest one in the entire
Solar System. Contrary to popular belief, this planet's name has nothing to
do with the liquid metal. Mercury was, instead, named after the famous
Roman messenger god Mercurius.

Mercury takes a little more than 58 days to complete its rotation, so try to
imagine how long days must be there! Since the temperatures are so
extreme, albeit not as extreme as on Venus, Mercury has been deemed to
be non-habitable for humans

Activity 1: hypothetical scenario
Scenario - In a sustainable community called "EcoVille," residents and businesses are
committed to reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy
sources. Analyze the bar chart and answer the following questions:

1. Calculate the proportion of energy in

EcoVille that comes from non-renewable
sources. How does this compare to the
percentage of renewable energy sources?

2. If 10,000 residents used public
transportation more frequently, how many
additional people chose public transit

Activity 2: simulation game
Instructions - Students will take on the roles of resource managers, scientists, and
policymakers on the fictional island of EcoIsland. They must make decisions to balance
economic development, conservation, and ecological well-being. Use the following table to
divide the class in roles and record their answers :
