DISKUSI 3
Sumber MKDU4107 MODUL 3 Hal. 3.1 – 3.5 (Independent clause) Hal. 3.16 (Dependent clause)

Contoh :
- I stepped inside, my arms turning to goose bumps from the chill.

Ada 2 independent clause dalam kalimat di atas – ‘I stepped inside’ dan ‘my arms turning to goose bumps
from the chill’ – yang dihubungkan dengan sebuah koma.
The two girls were getting hungry then, so they decided to go and find something to eat.

Ada 2 independent clause dalam kalimat di atas yang dihubungkan dengan konjungsi ‘so’.
- Eko is a chubby, cute little boy; everybody loves him.
independent clause di atas dihubungkan dengan titik koma. Hanya titik koma ini digunakan bila
kedua independent clause berhubungan erat dan seimbang dalam arti panjangnya.

Pada dasarnya klausa dapat digabung dengan 3 cara : coordination, subordination, dan dengan
menggunakan titik koma.
Coordination menggabungkan independent clause dengan menggunakan coordinating conjunction seperti
: and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so.
Contoh :
- I’ve got a DVD player in my room now, so I can watch movies in peace and quiet at last.
- My mum complains a lot for she does all the work around here.
- You can pay your debst or I call the police.
- He’s only fifty, but I’m fifty too.
- No Min Woo plays drum well, yet his favourite instrument is.

Subordination artinya mengubah salah satu dari klausa yang ada menjadi subordinate element yang tidak
dapat berdiri sendiri melalui penggunaan sebuah subordinating conjunction (because, although dll)
atau relative pronoun (that, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, whose and of which).
Contoh:
- Although Agus often thought about going to China, he never talked to his friends about it.
- Adi, who is Agus brother, told Agus to go to China no matter what his friends said.

Titik koma dapat menggabungkan dua independent clause dengan atau tanpa bantuan suatu conjuctive
adverb (transitional expression) seperti however, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, as a result, dan
lain-lain.
- Agus has such a good career; he can go any where he likes.
- She stood at the edge, but then decided otherwise; she walked home.

2. Dependent clause
Menurut Richard Nordquist (Grammar.about.com/od/ab/g/adverbterm.htm), dependent clauseadalah
sekumpulan kata yang mempunyai sebuah subjek dan sebuah verba dan tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai
sebuah kalimat dan dikenal juga dengan nama subordinate clause.
Contoh :
- When I woke up, it was already night.
- Before I found a rope I could reach to climb abroad.
- As I couldn’t see any hats or fields on the island, I thought the island was probably uninhabited.

Dependent clause terdiri dari 3 jenis : adverb, adjective, and noun clause. Contoh :
Adverb clause berisi informasi yang menerangkan tentang apa yang sedang dibicarakan dalam verba utama.
When the working time is over, we’ll go to the supermarket.
Haris wanted to go to his brother’s house because he is sick.

Adjective clause berisi informasi yang menerangkan tentang apa yang sedang dibicarakan dalam nomina
utama.
His brother, who is a consultant, suffers from stroke.
My TV that is broken is being repaired.

Noun clause
Do you know what that means?
What she does is no concern of mine.
