Activity 1
In 1905 there was a TV talkshow that interview great inventors at that time. Below
is a script of interview with the Wright brothers.
Host : Hello and welcome to our talkshow tonight Great inventors! Today we
have very special guests Orville and Wilbur Wright. We are going to ask
them about their revolutionary inventions. What do you call your
invention?
Host : Oh, is it like a flying car? How did you get the inspiration?
Orville : Our dad gave us a toy helicopter that flew with the help of rubber bands.
We have been interested in the idea since then.
Wilbur : Orville has always liked to build kites, so we have experimented with
making our own helicopters for a while now.
Host : But that was only a toy, what about the actual plane?
Wilbur : Orville made the first flight with our first plane at Kitty Hawk on
December 14 1903.
Orville : Kitty Hawk had a hill, good breezes, and was sandy. The condition would
help soften the landings in case of a crash. The first flight lasted 12
seconds and they flew for 120 feet.
Wilbur : We have worked and experimented with gliders to perfect the wing
design and control since then.
Host : I see. So you have had the newest version of your airplane?
Wilbur : Yes. Recently, I took a newly designed airplane that we called the Flyer
II for the first flight lasting over 5 minutes.
BIG -3.6/4.6/2/1-1
Host : How amazing! I think this invention will be a big thing soon.
Wilbur : Our father has asked us not to fly together. He said it is for the safety
reason.
Orville : Yes, we will continue making more experiment so that airplane will be
available for everyone soon.
Host : Okay, we wish you good luck with the next experiments.
After doing the task, let us learn more this matter. Have fun.

The Invention of Penicillin
During the first World War, a British army doctor, Dr. Alexander Fleming,
looked for ways to treat infections caused by dangerous bacteria entering soldiers’ wounds.
Antiseptics were considered useless because not only would they kill bacteria, but also
destroy the body cells.
Years of research brought Dr. Flemming very little success, until something
happened in September 1928. This was the moment of the discovery of penicillin, one of
today’s antibiotics.
His discovery was made by accident when had sat overnight on a laboratory table,
had partly changed color the next morning. After an examination under the microscope, it
was clear that some mold had entered it. Interesting enough, the bacteria had all been
killed by some substance that the mold had produced. This was what we now know as
penicillin.
With the help of Dr. Howard W. Florey and Dr. Ernest B. Chain, penicillin was then
produced on large scale, enabling doctors to cure millions of people all over the world.
Subsequently, Dr Fleming was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1945 for this discovery.

The Invention of the Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell as a Scottish - born American teacher and Scientist. While
experimenting on the telegraph in 1870, he found it possible to transmit the human voice
over a wire by using electricity.
To make up for his lack of mine and skill to make the equipment for his
experiments, he invited Thomas A. Watson to join him. The two became best friends and
colleagues.
On June 2,1875,while Bell was at one end of the line and Watson worked on the
reeds of the telegraph in another room, Bell heard a sound over the wire. The next day, the
instruments transmitted the sound of Bell’s voice to Watson again, but the instruments only
transmitted sound, not words
In September 1875, Bell and Watson kept working to improve the instrument. By
March 1876, Bell managed to make a transmission, but the sound was faint. He called his
instrument a “ telephone” Bell improved on the instrument, and on march 10, it carried its
first meaningful sentence. Bell’s telephone was so famous that he patented it. The first
telephones were installed the following year.

Yesterday, a very bad traffic jam happened on Pitt Street. It was almost three
kilometers down the road. A long line of vehicles was moving along at slow pace. The
vehicles were crawling almost bumper to bumper. There is usually a smooth flow of traffic
along that stretch of road. The traffic jam was apparently caused by a road accident at
the end of Pitt Street.
Near the end of street, where there was a sharp bend, two wheels were lying
on the road divider. A car had knocked down a lamp - post and there was broken glass
all over the road. A crowd of curious on – lookers had gathered at the scene of the
accident. However, they were told by a policeman to stay away from the wrecked car.
Policeman were busy controlling the situation.
The car had skidded after turning round the bend. It had jumped off the road
divider and knocked down the lamp-post. The car was terribly damaged.
Soon there was a commotion as a military truck and a public works department
van arrived. Some men in green overalls got down from the truck and started working on
the lamp - post using machines and electrical gadgets. It was reported that three men
were badly injured. They had been taken by the ambulance to the nearest hospital.
It was a really bad accident in a busy day. Luckily, there were no passers - by

market to buy some food. At first the
girl refuses, but the mother persuades
her by saying they are going to buy new
clothes. The girl finally agrees. But she
asks her mother to walk behind her.
She doesn’t want to walk side by side
with her mother. Although her mother
is very sad, she agrees to
walk behind her daughter.
On the way to the market, everybody admires the girl’s beauty. They are also curious.
Behind the beautiful girl, there is an old woman with a simple dress. The girl and her mother look
very different!“Hello, pretty lady. Who is the woman behind you?” asks them.“She is my servant,”
answers the girl.
The mother is very sad, but she doesn’t say anything.
The girl and the mother meet other people. Again they ask who the woman behind the beautiful
girl. Again the girl answers that her mother is her servant. She always says that her mother is her
servant every time they meet people.
Resolution
At last, the mother cannot hold
the pain anymore. She prays to God to
punish her
daughter. God answers her prayer.
Slowly, the girl’s leg turns into stone. The
process continues to the upper part of
the girl’s body. The girl is very panicky.
“Mother, please forgive me!” she cries
and ask her mother to forgive her. But
it’s too late. Her whole body finally
becomes a big stone. Until now people still can see tears falling down the stone. People then call it
the crying stone or “batumenangis”.

Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a simple

man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest catch which he
ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish turned into a beautiful princess.
He felt in love with her and proposed her to be his wife. She said; “Yes, but you have to
promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I was once a fish, otherwise there will be a
huge disaster”. The man made the deal and they got married, lived happily and had a daughter.
Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the fields.
One day, his daughter was so hungry and she ate his father’s lunch. Unfortunately, he
found out and got furious, and shouted; “You damned daughter of a fish”. The daughter ran
home and asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broken
his promise. Then she told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about
to come.
When her daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-

Long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatera, lived a
woman and her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang’s father had passed away when he
was a baby, and he had to live hard with his mother.
Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong child. He usually went to the sea to
catch fish, and brought it to his mother, or sold it in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he saw a merchant’s ship
which was being raided by a small band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin
Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant was so happy and asked Malin Kundang to
sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became a wealthy merchant, with a huge ship, loads
of trading goods, many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed
on a beach. The villagers reconigzed him, and the news ran fast in the town: Malin
Kundang became a rich man and now he is here. His mother, in deep full sadness after
years of loneliness, ran to the beach to meet her beloved son again.
When the mother came, Malin Kundang, in front of his well dressed wife, his
crews and his own gloriness, denied to meet that old, poor and dirty woman. For three
times she begged Malin Kundang and for three times yelled at him. At last Malin
Kundang said to her “Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty
and ugly peasant!” Then he ordered his crews to set sail.
Enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t
apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and set sail.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and
it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologized. He was thrown by the wave out of his
ship, fell on a small island, and suddenly turned into stone.

Cinderella
Once upon a time, there was a young girl named Cinderella. She lived with her step mother and
two step sisters. The step mother and sisters were conceited and bad tempered. They treated Cinderella
very badly. Her step mother made Cinderella do the hardest works in the house; such as scrubbing the
floor, cleaning the pot and pan and preparing the food for the family. The two step sisters, on the other
hand, did not work about the house. Their mother gave them many handsome dresses to wear.
One day, the step sister received an invitation to the ball that the king’s son was going to give at
the palace. They were excited about this and spent so much time choosing the dresses they would wear. At
last, the day of the ball came, and away went the sisters to it. Cinderella could not help crying after they had
left.
“Why are you crying, Cinderella?” a voice asked. She looked up and saw her fairy godmother
standing beside her, “because I want so much to go to the ball” said Cinderella. “Well” said the godmother. ”
You’ve been such a cheerful, hardworking, uncomplaining girl that I am going to see that you can go to the
ball”.
Magically, the fairy godmother changed a pumpkin into a fine coach and mice into a coachman and
two footmen. Her godmother tapped Cinderella’s raged dress with her wand, and it became a beautiful ball
gown. Then she gave her a pair of pretty glass slippers. “Now, Cinderella”, she said; “You must leave before
midnight”. Then away she drove in her beautiful coach.
Cinderella was having a wonderfully good time. She danced again and again with the king’s son.
Suddenly the clock began to strike twelve, she ran toward the door as quickly as she could. In her hurry,
one of her glass slipper was left behind.
A few days later, the king’ son proclaimed that he would marry the girl whose feet fitted the glass
slipper. Her step sisters tried on the slipper but it was too small for them, no matter how hard they
squeezed their toes into it. In the end, the king’s page let Cinderella try on the slipper. She stuck out her
foot and the page slipped the slipper on. It fitted perfectly.
Finally, she was driven to the palace. The king’s son was overjoyed to see her again. They were
married and live happily ever after.
