ABSTRACT
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a systemic disease that has a relationship between skeletal muscle
involvement and molecular genetic. One of the causes of COPD is cigarette smoke which becomes free radicals and
then inhaled by humans into the respiratory system causing exacerbations. The purpose of writing to describe the free
radical process that occurs in people with COPD. The research method is literature review from previous research
journals and books that support writing. Free radicals that are in the human body, is one of the products produced from
normal cell metabolism. In normal conditions, this free radical has a function as the body's defense system in the form
of ROS and RNS. The amount of free radicals can experience an imbalance in the body, if exposed to cigarette smoke,
causing oxidative stress. The amount of free radicals that has increased dramatically will affect the body's
inflammatory process locally in the airway and systemic in patients with COPD.
