Dua tahun yang lalu Sara ke Filipina untuk belajar melalui program pertukaran mahasiswa. Di Filipina,
Sara bertemu banyak teman dan salah satunya Ron. Saat di Filipina, Sara mengajak Ron untuk
mengunjungi Indonesia.
Pagi hari ini, Ron akan datang di Indonesia. Nanti malam pada jam 19:00, dia ada janjian dengan Sara.
Dia sangat senang bertemu dia lagi setelah hampir dua tahun.

B. Kosakata/Tata Bahasa
Basic Prepositions
Locative prepositions are used to indicate the place of the action as indicated by the following: di
‘on/in/at,’ dari ‘from’ and ke ‘to’. These locative prepositions can be combined with other words that
indicate direction such as depan ‘front,’ belakang ‘back,’
bawah ‘under,’ atas ‘above,’ etc., and locative pronouns sini (here), situ ‘there (close),’ and sana
‘there (far).’
di bawah ‘under’
ke bawah ‘downward’
dari bawah ‘from underneath’
di dalam ‘inside’
ke dalam ‘inwards’
dari dalam ‘from inside’
di luar ‘outside’
ke luar ‘outwards’
dari luar ‘from outside’
4
di pinggir ‘on the edge’
ke pinggir ‘to the edge’
dari pinggir ‘from the edge’
di sebelah kiri rumah ‘on the left hand side of the house’ ke sebelah kanan rumah
‘to the right hand side of the house’ dari dari sebelah kiri rumah ‘from the left
hand side of the house’
The preposition pada ‘on/in/at’ indicate the time of the action or event. It is followed by words that
indicate the time, day, and year of the action or event. In informal conversations, pada is frequently
dropped.
The prepositions kepada ‘to’ and untuk ‘for’ are used for people, animals, and concrete objects:
kepada yang terhormat (lit. to the most respectable) Dear Mr./Mrs. kepada Ana to
Ana
untuk saya for me
untuk anaknya for his/her child
untuk kalian semua for all of you
For abstract nouns, the preposition dalam ‘in/at/on’ is used.

Adjuncts of Time
In Indonesian, words and phrases that indicate the time when an action or event occurred is
important because Indonesian verbs do not have tense markers. There are instances, however, when
speakers do not use adjuncts of time. In this case, Indonesian speakers just rely on the context of the
situation and mutual understanding.
Here are some of the most commonly used adjuncts of time in Indonesian.
tadi pagi
‘this morning (the morning that’s just passed)’
tadi malam
‘last night (the night that’s just passed)’
Mereka bertemu di restoran tadi malam.’ ‘They met at the restaurant last night.’
6
Nanti ‘about to come’
nanti malam
‘tonight (the night about to come)’
nanti sore
‘this afternoon (the afternoon about to come)’
Sekarang ‘now’
Keluar sekarang!
‘Get out now!’
Besok2 ‘tomorrow’
Sampai besok.
‘See you tomorrow.’
Kemarin ‘yesterday’
2
The words besok and kemarin literally mean ‘tomorrow’ and ‘yesterday,’ respectively. However, these words do not
always mean ‘the day after today’ or ‘the day before today,’ but also ‘days after/before today’ Besok and kemarin can also
function to mark days in the future and past. For example, Sabtu besok could mean ‘this coming Saturday’ or ‘next
Saturday.
