GRAMMAR FOCUS
Every sentence in English must have a subject and a verb.
Kalimat bahasa Inggris hanya boleh ada satu subjek dan satu kata kerja kalimat. Subjek dapat
mempengaruhi bentuk kata kerja kalimat dimana subjek tunggal dan subjek jamak dalam tenses
tertentu akan memiliki bentuk kata kerja yang sedikit berbeda.
Contoh: - A student comes to school early every day.
S V
- Some students come to school early every day.
S V
Subjek berupa: noun/noun phrase, pronoun, dummy subject, gerund, infinitive, noun clause.
NOUN

barang, kejadian, zat, atau kualitas.
 Person: postman, teacher, Tom, neighbor.
 Place: village, England, Edinburgh, street, park.
 Thing: box, banana, computer.
Fungsi noun dalam kalimat ada dua, yaitu sebagai:
 Subjek (S), yang letaknya sebelum kata kerja kalimat (verb).
 Objek (O), yang letaknya setelah verb atau setelah preposition.
Noun verb noun prep. noun
Teachers allowed students to study in classrooms until evening.
S O O
Noun phrase merupakan sekelompok kata yang membentuk unit kata
benda; yang memuat determiner (termasuk article), dan/atau adjective.
Contoh: a student; some students; clever students; some clever
students
Note: - Article (a, an, dan the) adalah kata sandang untuk mendampingi kata benda/noun.
- Determiner (seperti some, many, this, that) merupakan kata atau frasa yang
biasanya diletakkan di depan noun untuk membatasi makna noun tersebut.
- Adjective atau kata sifat (seperti nice, good, big) adalah kata yang menerangkan
noun atau memberikan tambahan makna kepada noun/pronoun.

EXERCISE 3
Identify nouns or noun phrases in the text and decide the function of each.
NURSING
Nurses make up the largest group of health care workers in the world. They work
with doctors and other medical providers to care for people who are sick or injured.
Most nurses work along with doctors in hospitals, clinics, or offices. They often
work with nurse’s aides or assistants, too. Nurses find out about a patient’s health by
asking questions. They also check such signs as blood pressure and temperature.
Nurses give medicine, change bandages, help patients move around, and provide
other treatment. They give advice on how to get well and how to stay healthy. They
comfort frightened patients and worried family members.

PRONOUN
Pronoun (kata ganti) adalah kata yang digunakan untuk menggantikan noun
atau noun phrase. Sama seperti noun, pronoun memiliki dua fungsi dalam

 Objek, yang letaknya setelah kata kerja kalimat atau setelah preposisi.
The teacher allowed students to study in the classroom until evening.
S O O
She allowed them to study in it until evening.
S O O

Selain sebagai subjek dan objek kalimat, tipe lain dari pronoun adalah sebagai
kata ganti kepunyaan, yaitu possessive pronoun dan possessive adjective.

our coats and backpacks. A special guide explained the tour to us. I learned many new things.
For example, I didn’t know our solar system was so big. Toward the end of the tour, the guide
invited me to visit the planetarium again. I will definitely come back someday. I asked friends to
name a favorite planet. Mine is Saturn because of its many rings.

Replace the nouns with suitable pronouns.

Anna decided at the beginning of Anna’s first semester of college that Anna would run for thirty
minutes every day. Anna knew that Anna would be taking a literature class with a lot of reading,
so instead of buying print copies of all the novels Anna’s teacher assigned, Anna bought the
