Kebanyakan orang menganggap kecelakaan sebagai kejadian acak atau tak terhindarkan
yang terjadi begitu saja karena kesialan, kecelakaan sesaat, atau bahkan kehendak Tuhan.

Konsep modern tentang kecelakaan sebagai penyebab kematian muncul dalam Bills of
Mortality yang diterbitkan di London 1592 dan kemudian dianalisis oleh John Graunt
(Loimer dan Guarnieri 1996). Namun, hingga saat ini pandangan tradisional bahwa cedera
dan kematian yang disebabkan oleh "kecelakaan" adalah acak dan terjadi begitu saja dan
oleh karena itu tidak dapat diprediksi telah menghambat pendekatan kesehatan masyarakat di
bidang ini.

menjadi penyebab utama kematian.

mengemudi, tidak mengenakan sabuk pengaman
sewaktu mengemudi, mengemudi dengan kecepatan
tinggi, dan secara ilegal atau melanggar lampu merah,
dan secara umum cenderung menyepelekan bahaya
mengemudi (CDC 2001).

Jumlah korban cedera yang tidak disengaja pada anak-anak dan kaum muda dari usia satu hingga 24
tahun di Amerika serikat lebih besar daripada penyebab kematian lainnya seperti kanker, influenza,
dan Hiv (pusat statistik kesehatan 2000)

diimplementasikan dalam upaya mencegah kekerasan
remaja atau mengurangi tingkat keparahannya, tetapi hanya

bertujuan untuk menyediakan dukungan korban
dalam bentuk pencegahan kekerasan, menggunakan
pendekatan sosio-ekonomis yang memperkuat
elemen perlindungan lingkungan.
