Language Features of Caption Text

• Use of Grammatically complete sentences: Subject – Verb -

Object/Complement - Prepositional Phrases
• Use of Simple Present Tense in the main sentence, Simple Past Tense in the
following sentences.
• S + V1 + O
• S + V2 + O+ adverb of time

• Use of prepositional phrases to state the circumstances, mostly place

and time
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that lacks either a verb or a subject.
It normally consists of a preposition and a noun or a preposition and a pronoun

The rules of writing photo caption
• Supply specific information (answering 5 WH-questions)
Who/what is that?
What is going on?
When did it happened?
Where did it happened?
Why did it happened?
How did it happened?
• Use the present tense to describe the action in the photo
• Caption are written in a complete sentence-mostly a declarative sentence. One or two sentences are enough
to describe a photo, but if more explanation is needed, a caption may have three sentences.
• Clearly identify the people and location that appear in the photo. Mind the correct spelling of the names.
• For photographs of more than one person, identify from the left to right. In case of large group, identify only
the notable people.
