Courtesy can be said to be the unwritten regulation which is assumed in all the formal written rules. Courtesy in the mess however must be exercised within a framework of organized behavior which has been determined over the years through a degree or tradition. Indeed, although you are encounter some differences in local rules as you move from mess to mess, you always be conscious of the general ethics which has been determined by long developed customs and patterns of behavior set down by previous generations, in order create and maintain a common sense application of discipline and good manners. On joining or visiting the mess for the first time, you should make yourself know to the President of the Mess Committee (PMC). Every mess keeps a visitors book in which all visitors should write their names. You should write your name in the visitors book on arrival at any mess other than your home mess.

PHONETIC ALPHABET AND SIGNAL FLAGS

A phonetic alphabet is a list of words used to identify letters in a message transmitted by radio or telephone. Spoken words from an approved list are substituted for letters. For example, the word "Navy" would be "November Alfa Victor Yankee" when spelled in the phonetic alphabet. This practice helps to prevent confusion between similar sounding letters, such as "m" and "n", and to clarify communications that may be garbled during transmission. An early version of the phonetic alphabet appears in the 1913 edition of The Bluejackets Manual. Found in the Signals section, it was paired with the Alphabetical Code Flags defined in the International Code. Both the meanings of the flags (the letter which they represent) and their names (which make up the phonetic alphabet) were selected by international agreement. Later editions included the Morse code signal as well. Flags with special meanings in Navy signaling were given extra names. These five flags are called governing flags. They convey specific information about how to interpret a signal based on their position among the other flags raised. The governing flags are called Afirm (Affirmative), Int (Interrogatory), Negat (Negative), Option (Optional), Prep (Preparatory). The Navy often substituted these special names for the standard word listed in the phonetic alphabet. During World War II, when it was necessary for the Navy to communicate with the Army or Allied forces, signalmen were directed to use the standard words, given in parentheses. The words chosen to represent some letters have changed since the phonetic alphabet was introduced. When these changes occur, they are made by international agreement. The current phonetic alphabet was adopted in 1957

SEMAPHORE FLAG SIGNALLING SYSTEM.

44

CADET LIFE The Semaphore flag signaling system is an alphabet signalling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern.

2012 /2013

The flags are usually square, red and yellow, divided diagonaly with the red portion in the upper hoist. The flags are held, arms extended, in various positions representing each of the letters of the alphabet. The pattern resembles a clock face divided into eight positions: up, down, out, high, low, for each of the left and right hands (LH and RH) six letters require the hand to be brought across the body so that both flags are on the same side.

Flag positions in Semaphore One way to visualize the semaphore alphabet is in terms of circles:

first circle: A, B, C, D, E, F, G; second circle: H, I, K, L, M, N (omitting J); third circle: O, P, Q, R, S; fourth circle: T, U, Y and 'annul'; fifth circle: 'numeric', J (or 'alphabetic'), V; sixth circle: W, X; seventh circle: Z

In ther first circle, the letters A to C are made with the right arm, and E to G with the left, and D with either as convenient. In the second circle, the right arm is kept still at the letter A position and the left arm makes the movements; similarly in the remaining circles, the right arm remains fixed while the left arm moves. The arms are kept straight when changing from one position to another.

Why is a ship referred to as "she?" It has always been customary to personify certain inanimate objects and attribute to them characteristics peculiar to living creatures. Thus, things without life are often spoken of as having a sex. Some objects are regarded as masculine. The sun, winter, and death are often personified in this way. Others are regarded as feminine, especially those things that are dear to us. The earth as mother Earth is regarded as the common maternal parent of all life. In languages that use gender for common nouns, boats, ships, and other vehicles almost invariably use a feminine form. Likewise, early seafarers spoke of their ships in the feminine gender for the close dependence they had on their ships for life and sustenance.
