Ayah Lee (Lee Hoi-Chuen) adalah seorang Hong Kong Cantonese Opera singer dan film actor. Ibu Lee adalah seorang setengah Cina dan setengah Eropa. Keluarga ibu Lee merupakan salah satu klan yang paling kaya dan berkuasa di Hong Kong. Dia adalah keponakan dari Sir Robert Ho-tung, patriat Eurasian, dan anak dari Ho Kom-tong yang keduanya adalah bisnisman yg ternama.

Lee terlahir di keluarga yang berada. Namun lingkungannya saat itu terlalu penuh dengan kejahatan jalanan, persaingan geng, dan pengungsi dari Cina. Setelah terlibat beberapa perkelahian jalanan, orang tua Lee memutuskan bahwa dia harus mendapatkan ilmu bela diri. Lee pertama belajar dari ayahnya. Pada usia 13 Lee berlatih ilmu Wing Chun dilatih oleh Ip Man yang merupakan pengaruh paling besar pada perkembangan bela diri Lee.

1959 Usia 18 tahun, Lee kembali ke US dengan 100USD di sakunya. Setelah tinggal beberapa bulan di San Francisco, Lee pindah ke Seatle tahun 1959, untuk meneruskan pendidikan menengah atasnya, di mana dia juga bekerja di restaurant Ruby Chow sebagai pelayan. 1960 Desember 1960, Lee menyelesaikan pendidikan menengah atasnya dan menerima Diploma dari Edison Technical school di Seatle. 1961 Maret 1961, Lee masuk Uneversity of Washington, jurusan drama. Lee juga mempelajari philosophy, psychology, dan berbagai macam subjek. Di sana dia bertemu dengan calon istrinya Linda Emery, teman kuliah yang ingin menjadi guru, dan akhirnya menikah pada Agustus 1964.

Jun Fan Gung Fu Lee mulai mengajarkan matrial arts di US pada tahun 1959. Dia menyebutnya Jun Fan Gung Fu (Bruce Lee Kung Fu). Ini merupakan pendekatannya pada bela diri Wing Chun.

Berdasakan cerita Lee, komunitas Chinesee memberi ultimatum padanya untuk berhenti mengajarkan bela diri pada non-Chinesee. Lee menolak dan menantang untuk bertanding. Jika Lee menang, Lee bebas untuk mengajarkan belda diri pada siapa saja. Pertandingan berjalan selama 25 menit dan dimenangkan oleh Lee.
