Families, Kinship, and Descent

Industrialism and Family Organization The higher proportion of expanded family households among poorer Americans has been explained as an adaptation to poverty (Stack 1975). Unable to survive economically as nuclear family units, relatives band together in an expanded household and pool their resources. Adaptation to poverty causes kinship values and attitudes to diverge from middleclass norms. Adaptasi terhadap kemiskinan, sikap menyimpang dari norma-norma kelas menengah bawah di karenakan sumber daya mereka yang menipis atau kurang. Menurut saya kegiatan ekonomi di Sicilian cenderung di punyai oleh sekelompok orang, atau organisasi dan sebuah keluarga (kelompok keturunan). Karena Don Masino memonopoli kegiatan ekonomi, maka dari itu Guliano mungkin menikahi salah satu anggota keluarga dari Don Masino agar ia mendapatkan bagian materi nya untuk di berikan lagi kepada para petani kelas bawah yang tanah nya di monopoli oleh Don Masino.

Marriage is one of the primary ways of converting strangers into kin, of creating and maintaining personal and political alliances, relationships of affi nity (affi nal relationships). Exogamy, the practice of seeking a husband or wife outside ones own group, has adaptive value because it links people into a wider social network that nurtures, helps, and protects them in times of need.
