The Mixed Linguistic Expression Among Teenagers in South Jakarta

Abstrak

Pencampuran kode atau linguistic campuran adalah sebuah fenomena ketika beberapa orang berbicara
menggunakan dua atau lebih Bahasa pada saat yang bersamaan. Apa yang membedakan antara alih kode dan bilingual
adalah bilingual lebih terorganisir daripada alih kode karena alih kode digunakan pada saat yang sama, di sisi lain bilingual
tidak digunakan pada saat yang sama. Makalah ini membahas tentang tujuan fenomena alih kode, apa dampak dari
fenomena itu dan identias apa yang ingin mereka contoh jika mereka menggunakan fenomena tersebut. Metode yang
digunakan dalam penulisan ini adalah metode kualitatif, observasi dan wawancara virtual kepada remaja di Jakarta Selatan
melalui media sosial yang didistribusikan dalam tulisan ini. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa remaja di Jakarta Selatan
mencampurkan Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia untuk membuat diri mereka terlihat lebih pintar, untuk mendapatkan
prestise di antara komunitas mereka dan mereka ingin mengikuti apa yang viral saat ini. Namun, remaja di Jakarta Selatan
cenderung menggunakan Bahasa Inggris hanya ketika mereka berbicara dengan teman-teman mereka bukan dengan orang
yang lebih tua. Ini mungkin menyarankan bahawa alih kode hanya berguna jika sumber dan target sama-sama memahami
apa yang mereka ucapkan.

Abstract

Code mixing or mixed linguistic is a phenomenon when some people speak using two or more languages at the
same time. What distinguished between code switching and bilingual are bilingual more well-organized rather than code
switching since code switching are used at the same time, on the other hand bilingual are not used at the same time. The
paper is discussed about purpose of the phenomenon, what impact of that phenomenon and what identity that they want to
reflect if they use that phenomenon. The method used in this paper is qualitative method. Observation and virtual interview
to teenagers in South Jakarta trough social media are distributed in this paper. The result indicates that teenagers in South
Jakarta mixing English and Indonesian is to make themselves look smarter, for gaining prestige among their community and
they want to follow what is viral these days. However, teenagers in South Jakarta are tend to use English only when they
speak with their friends not with older people. This may suggest that code-mixing only useful if the source and the target
both understand what they speak each other.

1. Introduction
Code mixing is an activity in a speech where the
speaker using two or more language or two or more
dialects at the same time. Code mixing are mostly
happened because when the speakers are mean to
speak something but the meaning may not be able to
delivered clearly. Code mixing from the perspective
of linguistic can be interpreted as a phenomenon of
language which occurs in societies to make a
conversation more interactive and meaningful. Many
people in Indonesia often speak using two languages
as their language in conversation just to make the
conversation that happen between them are more
attractive and interactive, for instance, teenagers in
South Jakarta.
Teenagers in South Jakarta are often speak using
both languages, English and Indonesian. They tend
to code-switching in their daily conversation with
their age, and showing an attitude to elder. In
Indonesia, code-switching is uncommon since the
people always using their indigenous language, also
the lack of knowledge is a strong evidence of why
code switching are uncommon in Indonesia. Most
people in Jakarta are always speak using Betawi,
Jakarta indigenous language, as their daily language
to speak with others.
Code mixing are explained (Halmari, 1997, pp.
17–18; Pahta, 2004, p. 79) as a continuum in
progression in which code-switching precedes
borrowing in time and is more restricted in its use
(individual vs. societal). In Pahta’s (2004) words:
“The distinction between the two may seem straight
forward in theory: switching involves the use of two
languages in one utterance, whereas the term
‘borrowing’ is used for embedded elements that have
been integrated into the host language” (in
Moskowich & Crespo, 2006, p. 51)
Many researchers have been done to reveal the issue
of code mixing among teenagers. The first previous
study is “Sheng and Engsh : Development of Mixed
Codes Among the Urban Youth in Kenya” which

has been analized by Mohamed H. Abdulaziz
(2009), this journal discusses the same topic with
this study which is code mixing and this study has
same object of the study which is teenagers but this
study has research gap which is the places taken for
the research. This study taken in South Jakarta,
Jakarta, Indonesia and the object of this study is
teenagers in South Jakarta.
The second previous study is “SMS code switching
among teenagers in Jordan” which has been analized
by Ruba Ahmad Abdullah Mustafa. This study is
concern in code switching in SMS among teenagers,
so this journal is quite different with this study, the
difference is this study the code switching that used
by teenagers in South Jakarta are spoken and this
journal the code switching that used by teenagers in
Jordan are written in SMS.
This Study is different with the previous study
because this study is concern on code switching
among teenagers in South Jakarta. Teenagers in
South Jakarta nowadays mixing of the use of two
different languages, that is English and Indonesian.
Therefore, this study takes the data on Instagram’s
caption and focuses on sociolinguistic which is code
mixing as reference. Then, there are two purposes
for this study. The first purpose is to find what is the
purpose of teenagers by doing this kind of activities
which is using code mixing in their daily
communication, the second purpose is to find out the
reason why teenagers doing this code mixing
activities in their daily communication which is
speak using code mixing English and Indonesian
among others.
METHOD
In conducting the study, the researcher uses
qualitative method as a resource of purchasing valid
result. Qualitative method would help the research
since this study is about to analyze the reason of a
phenomenon that happened among teenagers in
South Jakarta, Jakarta.
This research is concerning in phenomenon
among teenagers in South Jakarta, what purpose of
 this phenomenon, from where they begin influenced,
what impact of this phenomenon for their social
network. So, the data of this study is not numerical
but description of the teenagers who did code mixing
and code switching as their daily language.
The utterances are the result of the declaration
and their daily language toward their social network
can be observed through questionnaires. The
analysis of the way they used code mixing and code
switching toward their friend or their social network.
From those explanations, that’s why descriptive
qualitative method is applied for this study because
the data is in the form of text, phrase, and word not
in numerical. As Creswel stated, qualitative is a
means for exploring and understanding the meaning
individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human
problem (2009:4).
The data of this study is Code Mixing which
spoke by teenagers in South Jakarta as their daily
communication with others. The Code Mixing are
taken from Teenagers’ caption on his post on
Instagram. There are also interview taken from
teenagers in South Jakarta trough virtual interview
via chat application that is Whatsapp application to
collect the result of an interview.
Furthermore, the documentation and virtual
interview with its guideline are conducted as the data
collection technique. The differences between each
research questions are RQ-1 identified by using
documentation data which is supported by using
Hoffman (as cited in Sinulingga 2009:29) . RQ-2
find out the reason why teenagers using this kind of
activities which is code mixing among others
teenagers and taken from virtual interview via
application chat using Whatsapp application.
The subject of this study is teenagers in South
Jakarta who did code mixing as their daily language,
the teenagers in South Jakarta are often mixed two
languages at the same time which is Indonesian and
English because they are getting influenced by many
factors. Therefore, the setting is mostly in South
Jakarta.
The data of this study are utterances in the form
of words, phrase or sentences which based on the
teenagers of South Jakarta’s statement and conversation
through the selected question that will be delivered by
the researcher. The data are words, phrases, or sentences

in the form of conversation which are uttered by them
which may answer the research question.
The teenagers in South Jakarta are often doing
code mixing (CM) and code switching (CS) in their daily
conversation either with their friends or their parents.
They begin getting influenced from many ways, the
factor were came from many things that may influenced
them. The teenagers were used as the data in age of
thirteen until nineteen years old and must have from
South Jakarta.
The researcher uses documentation for gathering
the data toward the teenagers in South Jakarta. Virtual
interview are needed to gain more answer if there is
unpredictable answer that may given by teenagers in
South Jakarta.
The research involved himself in the conversation with
teenagers in South Jakarta by giving questions in order to
gathering the answer to fulfil the
research questions. There are six steps which are applied
in data collecting procedure.
Since the researcher lived in Surabaya, so he contact
teenagers who lived in South Jakarta through social
media as WhatsApp, Instagram DM. The third thing to
do is giving the questionnaires toward them in order to
get the data. After getting the answer of the
questionnaires the research must analyze the answer and
match it with the research question. Find the utterances
or statement of the teenagers to answer the research
question.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The result and discussion of this study are
explained separately. The result is about identifying the
data obtain without any theories applied. Meanwhile, the
discussion is presented to clarify the analysis of result
supported by virtual interview of teenagers in South
Jakarta.
RESULT
In the result, the data is analyzed using Hoffman
theory about the reasons why code mixing appears.
Meanwhile, the purpose of this phenomenon are taken
from virtual interview of teenagers in South Jakarta by
using Whatsapp application.
Influencing Reasons of Using Code Mixing.
Many reasons can influencing teenagers to do code
mixing, as present by Hoffman (as cited in Sinulingga
2009:29) there are seven reasons why code mixing
happen or appears. The seven reasons are:
1) Talking about Particular Topic
Talking about particular topic are
sometimes getting more clearly utterances
when using English or other language since
the globalization are blooming these days.
Movies are so many which using English
as their dialogues especially Indonesian
movie, so teenagers who watch those
movies are getting influenced by those.
2) Quoting Somebody Else
Quoting Someone are also need using
English since using English are more
gaining prestige among them and mostly
researcher or intelligent person are from
abroad.
Although not denying that there are
many smart people from Indonesia but
teenagers in South Jakarta mostly see
people who are smart from abroad for
instance Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg etc.
3) Being Emphatic About Something
(Express Solidarity).
Nowadays, expressing sympathy could
make us a better person from other
perspective for example when there is a
terrorist attack, people from around the
world will give their sympathy to the
victim of that incident by saying Pray For
the Victim or if the attack was happen in
Indonesia on 2016, people around the
world give their sympathy by saying Pray
For Indonesia or Indonesia With Us or
Indonesia Strong. This is the example of
using English as giving the sympathy to
others.
4) Interjection (Inserting Sentence Fillers or
Sentence Connectors).
The way of expressing burst of feeling
or expressing emotions called interjection.
These days teenagers often expressing their
emotions by saying several words such as
shit!, damn!, listen, look, etc.
For example:
Damn! Batre hp gw abis.
(My phone run out of battery.)

5) Repetition Used for Clarification.
O’Connor and Michaels, and Lyster, on
the other hand, approach repetition as a
means of fostering conceptual
understanding. Repetition used as
clarification the command or statement, for
example : Get well soon, cepet sembuh ya,
obatnya jangan lupa diminum.
6) Intention of Clarifying the Speech Content
for The Interlocutor.
Teenagers in South Jakarta did code
mixing to their friends who understand
English which means this only happen
when the interlocutor or the listener
understand what the source are talking
about so they used code mixing to clarify
their speech.
7) Expressing Group Identity.
Each community or group may have
different way of communication. That is
why code mixing could be an identity of
some group, Bennet (as cited in Pardede &
Kisno 2012:133) mention that the way of
communication of one community is
different from the people who are out of
the community.
Saville-Troike (as cited in Norlaili
2012:11) also gives some additional
reasons for bilingual and multilingual
person to switch or mix their languages,
these are:
8) To Soften or Strengthen Request or
Command.
English can be used to soften and
strengthen the command, as it has been
mention previously, when a message is
repeated by using foreign language means
that giving it a strong command.
9) Because of Real Lexical Need.
The lack of equivalent lexical is the
one of crucial reason why code mixing is
happened. When the speaker can’t found
any words in English that can be the best
words to deliver the message clearly, the
speaker will find it in Indonesian.
 10) To Exclude Other People When A
Comment Is Intended for Only A Limited
Audience.
The speaker might want to speak for a
certain people not for all people, to avoid
the misunderstanding among all, the
speaker might use a language that nobody
knows.
Purpose of Using Code Mixing.
There will always be a purpose of any phenomenon that
happened several purpose of using code mixing. These
are four purpose based on South Jakarta’s Teenagers:
1.) Gaining Prestige.
Nowadays prestige are important to
make your image to others perspective better
since people nowadays are more pay attention to
the physical appearance rather than kindness of
your heart, so gaining prestige could be the first
purpose why teenagers in South Jakarta are
doing this kind of phenomenon. Teenagers in
South Jakarta are thinking that speaking English
language could make you get more respect from
people rather than speak with Indonesian,
because people stigma about English are still
high or good.
English language could make you seen
as a intelligent person because not only
understanding native language but you also
understanding foreign language. People who
speak with foreign language not only could get
more respect from their social network but also
bring negativity to older people.
Older people stigma are still bad about foreign language
since they don’t understand anything about it, they
thought that speak with older people using foreign
language are impolite.
Other case showing that this
negativity could be gone as long as the target
understand with foreign language, for example
if you talk with lecture of English department of
some university, you will get more respect from
them rather than speak with Indonesian
language even though the lecture are from
Indonesia.

2.) Impersonating Character.
As dreaming of becoming some
character appears, impersonating those
characters are needed. Impersonating characters
needed to use the language that the characters
say, if the character is from abroad then we may
speak the same language as the characters did.
This is what teenagers in South Jakarta think,
they want to be a person who they think is cool,
smart, intelligent, etc.
3.) Socializing.
This purpose could be a beginning of
the first purpose. We should make a wide
relations or friends if we want to gaining
prestige, so socializing must be needed by them.
Using English could be a better idea to socialize
with a certain people. Before this process
happened, the source must doing Personal
Branding.
4.) Personal Branding.
Personal branding could happen in
formal or informal conversations. In formal
conversations, personal branding needed to
apply a job. In informal conversations, personal
branding needed to make a friend or socialize to
some of community or group, so people may
know you as you are. By giving personal
branding using foreign language can gaining
some respect and also prestige among them
perspective.
Code Mixing
Teenagers of South Jakarta are often mixing
English and Indonesian in their daily
communication. They are doing it because their
environment are begin to give influence to the
others. There are words that teenagers are often use
in their code mixing activities.

uploaded on 15th September 2018 about photo of
herself try to enjoy her lunch meal and she
missed her breakfast and skip to lunch and she
hoped that her stomach is just a okay because of
that.
Renynurlaily : Which is udah waktunya lunch.
In this datum, @renynurlaily wrote on her
caption while using code mixing mixed English and
Indonesian. The word that she used is which is to explain
that she missed her breakfast and the time showed that it
is already lunch so she skipped breakfast to lunch. She
tried to tell that the time is already showed to have lunch.
Which is udah waktunya lunch, udah waktunya means it
is time for, so if it is combine with full dialog, which is it
is time for lunch.
@renynurlaily were trying to get sympathy from others
by telling that she hasn’t eaten anything for her breakfast
and telling the others that she skipped his breakfast to her
lunch time.

photo is uploaded on 20th September 2018, she

uploaded a photo when she was at the beach and
she was trying to tell that aquarius’ bestfriend is
water, sea and ocean.

In this datum, @chyttabelle wrote on her
caption while using code mixing mixed English and
Indonesian. The word the she used is literally. Word
literally usually used for telling something fact. In this
case, @chyttabelle were telling something fact that is
zodiac aquarius is best match with water,sea and ocean
@chyttabelle were trying to talking particular
topic which is zodiac aquarius by telling to her friends
that zodiac aquarius’ best friend is water,sea and ocean.

uploaded on 11st September 2018 about photo of herself
when on vacation at Dufan, Jakarta. She is telling that her
body is tired because she ran about 10 kilometers
yesterday and now she is at dufan enjoying her vacation.
She tried to tell all her friends about her current
condition.

In this datum, @ulytheresia wrote on her
caption while using code mixing mixed English and
Indonesian. The word that she used is actually, she said
that Actually, agak lelah sih body ini. Which mean that
Actually, my body is a little bit tired. She is trying to tell
her current condition that se felt al little bit tired because
she ran about 10 kilometers yesterday and now she is at
Dufan for enjoying her vacation.
@ulytheresia were trying to get sympathy from other by
telling that she is tried right now because she ran 10
kilometers yesterday.

Word basically here were supposed to saying a fact about
the comfortness of wearing a glasses. In English, word
basically often uses as a crutch word. Crutch word is a
support word used to fill in the blanks before we express
the essence of the sentence we are going to say. Word
basically can also be used to saying a simple fact about
something.
Teenagers in south Jakarta are often saying
basically in their first sentence of communication. They
are tend to don’t sure what is the real meaning of
basically and how to use it proper way so there is no
misused. Teenagers in South Jakarta were trying to
follow what their friends do even if they don’t know
what they are follow, they just think that using code
mixing is something hype.

@kendiw rather used words together than bersama-sama
because words bersama-sama has 2 syllables and
together only has one, @kendiw used that words because
it is shorter than Indonesian words. This phenomenon
include in crucial lexical need. Lexical need is often
happen when the source didn’t know the words the they
meant to say, they only understand the words from
different language.

In this datum, @harieisday is saying trip instead of
perjalanan because teenagers often says trip if they want
to say perjalanan in Indonesian. Words trip is already too
familiar in teenagers in South Jakarta vocabularies. We
can see that there was a tv program entitled My Trip My
Adventure showing about a host having a trip around
Indonesia. Teenagers in South Jakarta followed that hype
by doing trip also with the friend. This phenomenon
include in Crucial Lexical Need since words trip is more
familiar in teenagers vocabularies than perjalanan in
Indonesia
The Purpose of Using Code Mixing

In this datum, @ina_ikhtiarty’s friend get married earlier

than @ina_ikhtiarti. @ina_ikhtiarti were confused, how
come her friend could get married earlier while her friend
is younger than her. She also didn’t forget to saying a
good wishes to her friend that just married recently.

phenomenon called Interjection. In expressing
feeling, interjection is needed to make our word
strong. Interjection usually appear when
somebody is mad, yelling, surprise, disgust, joy,
excitement or even enthusiasm. Interjection
sometimes contain swearing words also like
damn, shit, fuck, etc. This teenager use
interjection to express his strong feeling, in this
case this teenager said that he uses English
when he was mad at someone and he yelled at
them using English mixed with Indonesian.
Expressing Sympathy

Code Mixing sometimes appear to expressing sympathy
to something. This teenager said that when there was a
war between Israel and Palestine, Indonesian people give
their support to Palestine through social media. This
teenager was following what its trend on that time which
was make a story or moment on their social media giving
support by adding hashtag on their moment, which the
hashtag was #PrayForPalestine. This teenager ask his
friends to make a moment just like what he did. He said
that “eh guys yuk bikin status yang lagi rame, pray for
palestine gitu” “Hey, guys. Lets make a moment that
booming, like pray for Palestine.”. This teenager use
English in his conversation asking his friend to follow
what people did which make a moment about giving
support to Palestine. He also mixed English and
Indonesian on his command toward his friend. This
phenomenon could appear on teenagers in South Jakarta
because people around the world are also doing the same
thing and they give hashtag #PrayForPalestine on their
social media, this trend appear on teenagers’ in South
Jakarta timeline and they start to follow what people did
on all around the world without knowing the truth
meaning of all that. They did not use social media wisely
and they just follow what its trend today.
Other example of expressing sympathy is showed by this
teenager. This teenager named Dimas, he uses code
mixing in his daily communication with his friend.
Dimas uses word next week as expressing sympathy
towards his friends. When his friends want to plan a
holiday or something, they choose the date and Dimas
offering to go next week because he had no money at that
time, even if they already choose the date, Dimas won’t
join with their friends to go to holiday or something
because he had no money, so he offered to go next week,
on next week big chance Dimas will have money.
“Next week aja deh, biar ngumpulin duit dulu, don’t
have money klo sekarang”
”What about next week, I need to collect my money
first, don’t have money know”
Dimas are looking for sympathy from his friends to
accept his offering because he won’t join if they commit
to go because he didn’t have money at all at that time so
he needs to collect some money before they go to
vacation or holiday.
Showing sympathy is important on these days to get
others attention of our condition. We can’t even stay in
this world alone, we need others to socialize, by giving
sympathy to the others, we can have wider connection.
Giving sympathy can also gain some prestige among
others, if we give our sympathy, other will think that we
have such kind heart to give others sympathy, and the
others will trust us from then.
Socializing

The data above show that teenagers doing code mixing
among their friends because he had been influenced by
his friend who speak using English in their school. He
said that “Temen-temen saya pada ngikutin, terus
akhirnya saya juga jadi ikutan” “My friend are starting
to do that and I begin to influenced by them”
This phenomenon could happen because our
environment is beginning to speak using English towards
other. This teenager is beginning to speak using English
because of his friend, he wants to imitate what viral on
that day. By following what viral on that day we can
gaining some prestige too. Socializing nowadays are
really important to gain connection to the others, improve
our confident, and can gain some skill on socializing
such as speech. On this world, words are more dangerous
than a sword, by improving our speech skill, we can be
an important person, but word could also make us killed,
if we don’t use it wisely.
Improving speech skill can be gained by speak
in various language, so we could understand what all
people are saying, because we have fluent all-important
language. We all know that English are become
international language, most country in the world are
already using English as their language to speak to the
other or to socialize. In Indonesia, the knowledge about
foreign language are less.
Many people in Indonesia still don’t
know how to speak English, and they don’t want
to learn anything about foreign language, that is
why our human source are weaker that other
countries, because we don’t want to learn new
thing.
This phenomenon that occurs in South
Jakarta could bring us advantages. The first
advantages, people in south Jakarta could learn
English by practicing on speaking in English as
their daily communication language, even
though their grammar are less but they still can
learn and improving as the day goes by. The
important thing of learning new thing is by
practice, if we only learn but never practice
what we learned, we will never know will it
worked or not.
Teenagers in South Jakarta thought that
it is a must to follow what its trend on that day,
 because they are tend to be up to date, and by
following what its trend you can gain others
respect. It doesn’t matter where you belong, if
you are following the trend and become up to
date, the others will respect you and want to be
your friend. Therefore, you will have wide
connection by following what its trend.
Following something that trending on that day,
could also bring more friends or even bring
Imitating Character
boy did, by speaking using English and Indonesian at the
same time, he thought that by speaking using English and
Indonesian, he could as cool as Boy William. He starts to
practicing toward his friends at school who also speaking
using two languages at the same time.
The data above show that the teenagers
are trying to imitate an Indonesian entertainer
who speak using 2 language that is English and
Indonesia as the same time. He said that “Ada
satu artis yang memang sangat saya kagumi
mas dan dia memang sering berbicara
menggunakan dua Bahasa, jadi saya sedikit
terpengaruh dan mulai mengikuti apa yang dia
lakukan.” “There is one artist actually that I
really admire and he often speaks in two
languages, so I was a little influenced and
started to follow what he was doing.”
That entertainer named Boy William.
Boy William is a famous entertainer in
Indonesia who influenced other to speak
English, we can watch in his vlog on his

popularity. Nowadays, there are many challenge
that had been uploaded on social media and
become trending, the teenagers or people who
follow that kind of challenge will become a
popular because many people are going to
search that challenge on social media, therefore
your account will showed up on their timeline
and you will gain popularity by that.

On his channel, Boy William, could
maintain two language that is English and
Indonesian, and his guest doesn’t confuse by his
speech, that is because the target is also
understand what boy are talking about. this
teenager is trying to imitate what
On few years ago, there were a famous
actress named Cinta Laura who are also make
this phenomenon become hype. She is from
Indonesian family but she is often to go abroad
and live for a long time on abroad, and when she
came back to Indonesia, she still speaking using
English toward her friend in here.
Her friend starts to confused because
they don’t know what Cinta are saying,
therefore Cinta are begin to mixed between
Indonesian and English at the same time. Her
fans are also trying what their idol did, Cinta’s
fans are trying to speak using two languages
same as what their idol did.
This phenomenon are also happened on
this teenagers, he is trying to imitate what his
idol did, that is Boy William doing code mixing
toward his guest on his YouTube Channel.
These teenagers are only doing code mixing to
his friends, and not to his parents, because if the
target doesn’t know what English is, then there
is no social interactions if only the source who
understand what code mixing is.
As we know that Indonesian people
are lack of knowledge of foreign language, that
 is why code mixing are not occurs to elder
people and only happened on teenagers.

what its trend on the world, they seem lack of knowledge
so they need to find their truly identity. Teenagers in
South Jakarta are still fragile, that is why they often do
what people do even they don’t even sure what they are
follow, whether it is good or even bad, as long as their
community do that thing and it can gain some prestige
among them they will follow it for sure. Prestige among
teenagers who don’t found their identity yet is kind a
important because they don’t know which road that they
need to take to step, they still blind of what happened
around them. They don’t know which way that lead them
to their identity, so they took any road that they thought
will give them their truly identity.
Suggestion
Hopefully, this study will help the readers to
understand about the phenomenon which happened
among teenagers in South Jakarta about code mixing as
their daily communication to the others.
As a suggestion, the next researcher can try to
study other phenomenon in other group especially about
code mixing while using this study as comparison or as
reference. The result can also be found by using
interview as a way to gathering the data, and use this
study as the reference.
