KATA PENGANTAR
Segala puja dan puji milik Allah SWT, hanya dengan rahmat dan hidayahNya
penyusun dapat menyelesaikan MEDALI (Materi Esensial dan Latihan Intensif)
Kelas VIII untuk SMP dengan menggunakan Kurikulum 2013 (K13) .
Kami menyusun MEDALI dengan harapan dapat digunakan dalam kegiatan
pembelajaran yang akan terjadi interaksi komunikatif antara guru dan siswa dan
antara siswa dan siswa. Setiap chapternya menggunakan penedekatan ilmiah
dengan menggunakan empat ketrampilan berbahasa yang meliputi: Mendengarkan,
Berbicara, Membaca, dan Menulis yang dapat dipraktekkan secara terpadu serta
dimunculkan tugas yang harus dikerjakan secara kelompok dan individu, dengan
sendirinya dalam kegiatan pembelajaran akan terbentuk suatu Learning
Community dan bisa melatih empat ketrampilan berbahasa yang diharapkan bisa
dikuasai siswa.
Dengan desain seperti ini, diharapkan setelah pelaksanaan kegiatan
pembelajaran, siswa mampu memahami teks secara lisan maupun tertulis sekaligus
mampu menggunakan bahasa Inggris dalam kehidupan sehari hari-hari.
Kami yakin MEDALI ini jauh dari sempurna. Untuk itu kami sangat mengharap
saran dan masukan guna penyempurnaan pada edisi berikutnya.
Akhirnya kami mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua pihak yang telah
membantu sehingga MEDALI ini bisa terwujud. Harapan kami MEDALI ini bisa

Expression of Getting Attention
When you tell a story, you can use questions to attract your listeners’ attention.
Whereas when you listen to a story, you can use several expressions to show that you are
paying attention to what is being talked about.

Asking for opinion is a skill in a good manner will mean that you get more information.

2. Modals “Can” is used to express Ability

Can, could, and be able to are used to express ability.
a. “Can” is used to show physical ability including the five senses: see, hear, feel,
smell, taste.
1) I can sing. I can sing a song for you!
2) I can feel happy when you tell me a joke.
b. “Can” is used to express a skill that requires training or practice.

1) They can sing well.
2) She can play guitar perfectly.
3) He can play football very well.
c. “Can” is used to express an opportunity.

1) We can read a book together.
2) I can buy a new jacket

3) You can buy a television set.
d. “Can” is used to give permission in casual situations. “May” is used to give

permission in formal situations.
1) You can leave as soon as you finish answering your test.
2) You can go without me if you are in a hurry.
3) He can go to the park by himself.
4) She can drive the car to school.
e. “Be able to” can be used instead of “can” in either the past or the present or will +
be able to for the future.
1) We are able to take care of ourselves.
2) I wasn’t able to go to the party because I had to work.
3) She was not able to go to work because she was sick.
f. “Cannot” and “can’t” are both negative forms of “can”.
1) Most roosters cannot fly.
2) Most birds cannot swim.
“Could” is the past form of “can”. The negative form is “could not” or “couldn’t”.
3) I couldn’t go to the party because I had to work.
4) She could not go to work because she was sick.

1. Mrs. Ira Kusno: Ebiet G. Ade is a great singer. His voice is wonderful. He can
compose a song, too. He himself has composed most of his songs.
The lyrics of his songs can take the listeners come to the situation
created in the song.
2. Joeli : My brother Eros is really a good model for me. I learn much from him.
He is independent, honest, responsible, and caring. He used to keep
studying until he really understand what he learns. No wonder he
always gets the best results. He is good in playing guitar, but he
cannot sing.

pulpen).Berikut contoh aplikasi dalam kalimat.
- Terdapat sebuah mobil di dalam rumah.

Perhatikan kalimat di atas, semua kalimat menunjukkan benda yang berjumlah satu (Sebuah

yang akan ditunjukkan adalah Tunggal atau satu. Maka dalam bahasa inggris sebagai

banyak. Misalnya: Two books (Dua buah buku), books (buku-buku), seven students (tujuh
orang siswa), many teachers (banyak guru), much water (banyak air) dll. Ingat bahwa setiap
kata benda yang lebih dari satu maka kata benda tersebut di tambah “s” atau “es”.Aplikasi
dalam kalimat yang menunjukkan benda lebih dari satu:
- Terdapat/ada 2 buah apel di atas piring

- Terdapat/ada banyak siswa di halaman sekolah.
- Terdapat/ada 10 buah computer di dalam gudang.
Perhatikan kalimat di atas, semua kalimat menunjukkan benda yang lebih dari satu maupun
banyak dan tidak ada yang tunggal, yaitu kita gunakan there are. Perhatikan contoh berikut:

Quantifier adalah kata atau kelompok kata yang digunakan untuk menyatakan jumlah.
