Descriptive Text

Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to
describe and reveal a particular person, place or thing.
Structures of Descriptive Text (generic structure) are :

1. Identification:
This part,in the first paragraph,the purpose is to identify something that you want to
describe or illustrate.Simple explanation ,identification serves to introduce the reader
about the object or something that we will describe before we tell about its
characteristics.The goal is that readers don’t get the wrong information,such as we want
to describe a car,but the reader thinks it’s a motorbike.
Example: You describe your new car,so the contents of the identification are: my father
just bought a new car.Actually,this car has long been my dream,but only now my father
bought it.(Bagian ini – pada paragraf pertama – tujuannya adalah untuk mengidentifikasi
sesuatu yang ingin dideskripsikan atau digambarkan. Penjelasan mudahnya, indentification
berfungsi untuk memperkenalkan kepada pembaca tentang objek atau sesuatu yang akan
kita gambarkan sebelum kita beritahu tentang sifat-sifatnya. Tujuannya agar jangan sampai
pembaca informasi. Kita mau menggambarkan mobil misalnya, tapi pembaca mengiranya
motor.
Contoh: kamu diminta untuk menggambarkan mobil barumu, maka isi identification-nya
adalah: Ayahku baru saja membelikan mobil baru. Mobil ini sebenarnya sudah lama aku idam-
idamkan, tapi baru sekarang ayahku membelikannya. (Berarti yang akan digambarkan adalah
mobilku, bukan mobil orang lain).)

2. Description:
This section in the secon paragraph and so on contains the characterics that are
attached to something that you have intoduced to the reader in the first paragraph.For
example (countinuing on the car above):My new car is the latest sports car from Toyota.
There are only two seats,one for the driver and one for the passenger,with the door.This
car can be sped up to speeds of 500 km/h,almost the same as the speed of the foker type
aircraft ( Bagian ini – pada paragraf kedua dan seterusnya – berisi tentang sifat-sifat yang
melekat pada sesuatu yang sudah kamu kenalkan pada pembaca pada paragraf pertama.
Misal (melanjutkan tentang mobil di atas): Mobil baruku ini merupakan mobil sport keluaran
terbaru dari Toyota. Jumlah bangkunya hanya dua, satu untuk sopir dan satunya untuk
penumpang, begitu juga dengan pintunya. Mobil ini bisa melesat hingga kecepatan 500
km/jam, hampir sama dengan kecepatan pesawat berjenis Foker.)

The Characteristic of Descriptive Text


Ciri-ciri ini penting untuk kamu perhatikan agar ketika menulis descriptive text tidak
salah. Jadi pastikan kamu menggunakan ciri-ciri berikut ini ketika akan menulis
menggunakan genre descriptive text:
1. Using Simple Present Tense. Kenapa menggunakan simple present tense? hal ini karena
kita akan menggambarkan sebuah fakta atau kebenaran yang melekat pada sesuatu
atau orang. Dan salah satu fungsi dari simple present adalah untuk menggambarkan
sebuah fakta atau kebenaran (contoh fakta: matahari itu panas). Oleh karena itu kamu
harus selalu menggunakan kata kerja bentuk pertama (verb-1).
Misal kamu akan menggambarkan sifat-sifat mobil baru kamu: The color of my
car is black, it can run up to 500 km/hour.

2. Karena fungsinya adalah untuk menggambarkan sesuatu dengan menjelaskan sifat-


sifatnya, maka dalam descriptive text akan banyak dijumpai kata sifat (adjective),
seperti handsome, beautiful, tall, small, big, atau jika kata sifat tersebut berasal dari kata
kerja, maka kamu akan mendapati tambahan -ve, -ing, -nt di belakangnya,
Contoh:
Create (membuat) > creative (orang yang pintar membuat sesuatu).
Interest (menarik) > interesting (sesuatu yang menarik)

3. Dalam descriptive text kita juga akan sering menjumpai relating verb (kata kerja
penghubung) yaitu is (seperti pada ciri nomor 1). Is dalam bahasa Indonesia sering
diartikan dengan “adalah”. Karena tujuan atau fungsi descriptive text adalah untuk
menggambarkan, maka pasti kita akan sering menjumpai kata adalah (is). His name is
Andy (namanya adalah Andy), his height is 160 cm (tingginya adalah 160 cm).
Example Of Describing People

My best friend is Ernesto and he is my classmate. We go to school together.


Ernesto comes from an educated family. His father is a school principal and his
mother is also a teacher.
He is punctual, well-educated, and has good manners. He is really hard working. He
always does his homework. He is also well-dressed and well-behaved. All teachers have
a high opinion of him.
Ernesto has a well-built body. He is gentle but fearless. He takes part in all sports,
scout, trekking and mountaineering activities. He has a good heart. He is truthful,
honest and obedient.
He also plays the guitar, and he makes his parents very proud of him. He secures
good marks and is usually top of his class in examinations. He inspires me to work
harder. He keeps me away from bad company. I am happy to have such a friend.

Hi Yanti,
Hi, I’m Andre from Medan. I’m a student at a vocational school. I’m I6 years old and I have dark
hair and brown eyes. I have two brothers, their names are Bobby and Toni. I also have a sister,
her name is Renata. Bobby is 25 years old and he’s an engineer. He has mustache and short hair.
Toni is 23 years old. He has gray eyes and he is a university student. Renata is 17 years old and
she studies at a vocational school, majoring in Banking. She has a flat nose and curly hair. She is
a very beautiful and friendly girl. I love my brothers and sister to the moon and back.
After school, I work at a cafe as a waiter. I usually get home at 9 pm. or 9.30 pm. every night.
But on Sundays, lm free. My favorite hobby is taking photographs. I like taking photographs of
people and football matches as photo object. That’s all for now. Please let me know if you come
to Medan. I’ll show you the beauty of Medan and the foods of course!
