IF CONDITIONAL

Conditional sentence atau kalimat pengandaian, digunakan untuk mengungkapkan sebab

akibat, kemungkinan terjadinya suatu hal, maupun menyatakan pengandaian atas hal yang sebetulnya
tidak mungkin terjadi.

There are 4 types of Conditional Sentence:

a. Conditional sentence type 0

Digunakan untuk menyatakan sebab akibat akan sebuah fakta yang sudah umum diketahui
kebenarannya (Something that is true /fact).
Pattern:
1. If + simple present tense, simple present tense
2. S + Simple present tense + if + simple present tense

e.g:

1. If you heat butter, it melts.

2. The ground gets wet if it rains.

b. Conditional sentence type 1

Digunakan untuk mengekspresikan suatu hal yang sangat besar kemungkinannya terjadi di
waktu yang akan datang (Possible situation in the present/future).
Pattern:
1. If + simple present, will/won’t
2. S + will/won’t + if + simple present

e.g:

1. If you go now, you will arrive there on time.

2. I will pass the exam if I study hard.

c. Conditional sentence type 2

Digunakan untuk mengungkapkan sesuatu yang tidak realistis atau sangat kecil
kemungkinannya untuk terjadi (Unreal/impossible situation in the present/future).
Pattern:
1. If + simple past, S + Would
2. S + Would + if + simple past

e.g:

1. If I lived in Seoul, I would go to the concert.

(Faktanya saya tidak tinggal di Seoul, dan saya tidak bisa pergi menonton konser)
2. I would play roller coaster every day if I owned a theme park.
(Faktanya saya tidak bisa bermain roller coaster, karena saya tidak memiliki taman
hiburan)

d. Conditional sentence type 3

Digunakan untuk menyampaikan pengandaian atas kejadian yang sudah terjadi di masa lalu.
Karena sudah terjadi dan tidak bisa diubah lagi kenyataannya, kita hanya bisa mengungkapkan
pengandaian apa yang akan terjadi jika kejadian tersebut berjalan berbeda dari kenyataan
(Something has happened).
 Pattern:
1. If + past perfect, S + would have + V3
2. S + would have + V3 + if + past perfect

e.g:

1. I would have bought some clothes if I had gone to Bandung,

(Faktanya saya tidak membeli baju karena saya tidak pergi ke Bandung)
2. If she had called me yesterday, I would have been happy
(Faktanya kemarin dia tidak menelepon sehingga saya tidak Bahagia)

Contoh pengandaian:

If I were to be Cinderella

If I were to be Cinderella, I would wear the glass slippers and I wouldn’t have run from
the prince and I would explain everything. Ask the fairy godmother to teach me the way of
magic. I would help many people and make dress.

Kerjakan soal - soal dibawah ini!

1. Make a paragraph about your favourite figure (singer, celebrity, movie character, etc) with the
title "If I were to be..." in English!
(Buatlah satu paragraf tentang pengandaian, contoh “jika saya menjadi Raisa”. Seperti contoh
teks “If I were to be Cinderella” dalam Bahasa Inggris!)
2. If you were given the opportunity to learn one foreign language other than English, which
language would you want? why? explain!

Conditional Type 1
- If you (go) _____ out with your friends tonight, I (watch) _____ the football match on TV.
- I (earn) _____ a lot of money if I (get) _____ that job.

Conditional Type 2

- I (buy) _____ these shoes if they (fit) _____

- If he (try) _____ harder, he (reach) _____ his goals.

Conditional Type 3

- If we (listen) _____ to the radio, we (hear) _____ the news.

- If you (switch) _____ on the lights, you (fall/not) _____ over the chair.
