dengan memperhatikan fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan
unsur kebahasaan yang benar dan sesuai konteks

Conditional Sentences
Structure :
A conditional sentence is composed of 2 parts :

If-clause + Main Clause


Example :
If it rains tomorrow, we will not come.

Types :

 There are 4 types of conditional sentences.


They are classified according to their specific
implications.

 Each type of conditional sentences uses


different tenses to show the difference in
their implications.
Conditional Sentences
Type 0 :

Use Talk about universal truth.

Tense : Present tense in both clauses
Example
: Present Tense Present Tense
If + S + V1 + O S + V1 + O

If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.


If you pour oil into water, it floats.
I am happy if Corona disappears.

Conditional Sentences

Type 1 Future Conditional


Use : Talk about a present or future probable case.
Tense : If-clause ~ Present Tense ( If + S + V1 + O)
Main Clause ~ Future Tense ( S + will + V1 + O)

Example :
Present Tense Future Tense

If I feel sick, I will not go to school.


If it rains tomorrow, the commitee will cancel the game.

Conditional Sentences
Type 2 (Present Conditional)

Use : Talk about a present or future improbable


case. (A case that is unlikely to happen)
Tense : If-clause ~ Past Tense (S + V2 + O/C)
Main Clause ~ would + V1
Example :
Past Tense
Would + V1
(V2/were)

If he were a bird, he would fly across the harbour. (Dendi is not a bird
so he doesn’t/can’t fly
If I had $200,000 now, I would buy a car.( I don’t have $200.000 so
I can’t buy a car

Conditional Sentences
Type 3 (Past Conditional)

Use : Talk about a past improbable case. (A case


that is unlikely to happen)
If-clause ~ Past Perfect (IF +S + HAD +V3 + O/C)
Tense : Main Clause ~ S + WOULD HAVE + V3 + O/C
Example :
Past Perfect Would have + V3
(Had + V3)

If I had found her address, I would have sent her an invitation.

(I didn’t find her address so I didn’t send her an invitation)


If I HAD MARRIED with Mr. X, I WOULD HAVE
STAYED in America.
