(PAINT)
Painting adalah satu istilah umum untuk aplikasi
organic coating pada permukaan material (metal or
non metal), menggunakan material liquid atau semi
liquid dimana jika diaplikasikan ke permukaan metal/
non metal secara manual atau mekanik dan
dikeringkan akan membentuk lapisan tipis yang
menempel dengan kuat dan mempunyai karakteristik
tertentu.
Pimer
PRIMER
a) Primers pigmented with metallic elements anodic to steel
Zinc-rich primers are the most commonly used of this type.
(b) Primers relying on the high adhesion and chemical-resistance properties of the binder
Two-pack epoxy primers are typical of this type. These primers may contain inhibitive
pigments to interfere with the corrosion process.

RE- PAINTING
Paint stripper
Paint stripper, or paint remover, is a product designed to remove paint and other
finishes and also to clean the underlying surface
Types of chemical paint remover
Caustics
Caustic paint removers, typically sodium hydroxide work by breaking down the chemical bonds of
the paint, usually by hydrolysis of the chain bonds of the polymers forming the paint. Caustic
removers must be neutralized or the new finish will fail prematurely. In addition, several side
effects and health risks must be taken into account in using caustic paint removers.
Solvents
Solvent paint strippers penetrate the layers of paint and break the bond between the paint and
the object by swelling the paint. The principal active common solvent paint strippers
is dichloromethane. Solvent strippers may also have formulations with orange oil), N-
methylpyrrolidone, esters , aromatic hydrocarbons, dimethylformamide,.
The formula differs according to the type of paint and the character of the underlying surface.
Paint stripper
Other components
Various co-solvents are added to the primary active ingredient. These assist with
penetration into the paint and its removal and differ according to the target paint.
•Ethanol is suitable for shellac,
•methyl ethyl ketone is used for cellulose nitrate,
• phenol and cresols are employed in some industrial formulas
•Benzyl alcohol is used as well.
Contoh Paint Stripper/Remover
The material to be applied should be thinned to the proper consistency for brushing.
A material that is too thick has a tendency to pull or rope under the brush. If the
materials are too thin, they are likely to run or not cover the surface adequately.
Proper thinning and substrate temperature allows the finish to flow-out and
eliminates the brush marks.
Spraying
Spraying is the preferred method for a quality finish.
Spraying is used to cover large surfaces with a uniform layer of material, which results
in the most cost effective method of application.
All spray systems have several basic similarities.
There must be an adequate source of compressed air, a reservoir or feed tank to hold a
supply of the finishing material, and a device for controlling the combination of the air
and finishing material ejected in an atomized cloud or spray against the surface to be
coated.
In conventional or air atomized spraying, the coating is supplied to a spray gun by siphon, gravity, or pressure feed.
When the gun trigger is pulled, the coating flows through the nozzle as a fluid stream. Compressed air from the center
of the nozzle surrounds the fluid with a hollow cone as it leaves the nozzle, breaking the coating into small droplets
and transferring velocity to it. Additional jets of compressed air from the nozzle break up the droplets further and form
an elliptical pattern.
High Volume Low Pressure Spray (HVLP)
This is similar to a conventional spray gun using a compressor to supply the air, but the spray gun itself requires a
lower pressure (LP).
A higher volume (HV) of air is used to aerosolise and propel the paint at lower air pressure. The result is a higher
proportion of paint reaching the target surface with reduced overspray, materials consumption, and air pollution.
HVLP has a higher transfer efficiency than conventional air spray, up to 65 to 75%. HVLP guns operate at pressures of
0.1 to 10 psi , 15 to 30 cfm of air
These operate connected to a high pressure pump commonly found using 300 to 7,500 pounds per square inch
(2,100–51,700 kPa) pressure to atomize the coating, using different tip sizes to achieve desired atomization and
spray pattern size. Compress air not used for atomization In an airless system, fluid is pumped under high
pressure through a spray tip. The tip size and pressure is what determines the material flow rate.
In electrostatic spray painting, the atomized particles are made to be electrically charged, thereby repelling each
other and spreading themselves evenly as they exit the spray nozzle. The object being painted is charged oppositely
or grounded.
The paint is then attracted to the object giving a more even coat than wet spray painting, and also greatly increasing
the percentage of paint that sticks to the object.
There are three main technologies for charging the fluid (liquid or powders):
All spray guns (regardless of brand name) have the same type of adjustments.
The upper control knob proportions the air flow, adjusting the spray pattern of the
gun. [Figure 8-11]
Paint Touchup
Paint touchup may be required on an aircraft following repair to the surface substrate.
Touchup may also be used to cover minor topcoat damage, such as scratches,
abrasions, permanent stains, and fading of the trim colors.
One of the first steps is to identify the paint that needs to be touched up.
Some detailed information for the identification of each finish is necessary to ensure
the topcoat application does not react adversely with the undercoat.
The following procedure aids in identification of the paint finish. Apply a coating of
engine oil (MIL SPEC, MIL-PRF-7808, turbine oil, or equivalent) to a small area of the
surface to be checked.
Common Paint
Common Paint Troubles
Soft Paint:
Identifikasi :
Mudah ditekan menggunakan jari
Penyebab:
pengeringan kurang sempurna
Chipping
Identifikasi:
berkurang.
Penyebab:
• proses pembersihan kurang sempurna
• perlakuan permukaan logam tidak sesuai
• proses pencampuran material cat kurang sempurna/ tidak sesuai
• penggunaan dempul yang tepat/ sesuai
71
Solvent Trap (Popping):
Identifikasi
sehingga cat membentuk seperti gelombang
Penyebab :
Penggunaan ampelas kasar atau Teknik pengampelasan kurang baik
Blushing (Milkiness)
Identifikasi
• Temperatur ruangan terlalu extrim (bila suhu udara terlalu tinggi, solvent
76
Chalking (fading, Oksidation, Weathering)
Identifikasi
Penampakan warna putih seperti kapur pada permukaan lapisan cat.
Penyebab:
Clearcoat yellowing
Identifikasi
Clearcoat memiliki rona kuning untuk itu.
Penyebab:
Cat baru:
• Alat / kontainer pencampuran kotor
• Terlalu banyak akselerator yang digunakan
Cat lama:
• Clear coat terlalu tipis
Fish Eyes or Craters
Identifikasi
Penampakan seperti kawah kecil atau mata ikan
Penyebab:
79
Lifting (Wrinkling, Raising, Alligatoring,
Shriveling, Swelling)
Identifikasi
• Lapisan Primer berpori pori
• Miskin arus primer
• Pelarut/ solvent dari top coat masuk menyerang primer
• Pemanasan /pengeringan berselang waktu / temperatur pemanasan tidak merata
• Metalik basecoats tidak rata
• Aplikasi top terlalu tipis
81
Peeling / Blistering / Adhesion Problems
Identifikas
• Flash off / waktu pengeringan terlalu pendek
flash off antar lapisan atau ketebalan lapisan
• Temperatur ruangan terlalu dingin
• Salah dalam penggunaan thinner / hardener
83
Solvent Popping
Identifikasi
Terjadinya blister / lubang kecil pada permukaan cat.
Penyebab:
• Penyemprotan terlalu banyak, terlalu cepat sehingga terjadi pembentukan
lapisanyang berlebihan
