FOR GRADE XI SEMESTER 1
 SOCIAL FUNCTION :

To persuade the reader or listener that importance of

reading should be realized by everyone.
Hortatory exposition merupakan sebuah jenis teks bahasa Inggris yang bersifat persuasif.
Biasanya, jenis teks ini digunakan untuk menjelaskan kepada pembaca mengenai sesuatu yang
boleh atau tidak boleh dilakukan.
Jenis teks ini tentunya bersifat formal dan juga harus ditulis berdasarkan fakta.
ak heran, jenis teks ini biasanya bisa kamu temui dalam jurnal ilmiah, majalah, artikel, koran,
pidato akademis, dan buku ilmiah.
Mungkin kamu masih samar dengan jenis teks formal lainnya seperti analytical
exposition. Walaupun jenis teksnya identik, ada fungsi yang membedakan mereka.
Jika pada analytical exposition memiliki tujuan untuk menyadarkan pembaca akan adanya isu
penting, hortatory exposition lebih berfungsi untuk memaksa pembaca untuk setuju bahkan
mengikuti instruksi.
GENERIC STRUCTURE OF
HORTATORY EXPOSITION
Berikut strukturnya:
Thesis: Bagian awal teks adalah thesis, yang berupa opini dari penulis dan
menjadi topik atau dari tulisan
Penulis dapat mengungakpan pendapat atau opini yang relevan dan berdasarkan fakta
mengenai isu atau tema yang ingin ditulis.
Arguments: Bagian arguments merupakan alasan-alasan yang mendukung
opini penulis beserta supporting idea
Recommendation: Bagian terakhir merupakan rekomendasi dari penulis untuk
permasalahan yang dipaparkan
 KARAKTERISTIK HORTATORY EXPOSITION

Untuk mengidentifikasi atau membuat sebuah tulisan dengan jenis hortatory exposition, ada karakteristik
yang bisa dipelajari.
•Memiliki tulisan yang fokus dengan penulisnya.
•Menggunakan abstract noun, seperti: culture, policy, advantage, dan sebagainya.
•Penulisannya selalu menggunakan action verb, seperti: value, ask, tell, argue, dan sebagainya.
•Thinking verb juga selalu digunakan dalam tulisan jenis hortatory exposition. Thinking verb merupakan
sebuah kata kerja yang berhubungan dengan kegiatan berpikir, seperti: think, worry, wonder, dan
sebagainya.
•Temporal conective juga digunakan dalam penulisan dengan jenis teks ini. Temporal connective adalah
sebuah frasa yang berhubungan dengan waktu. Contohnya: firstly, secondly, dan lainnya.
•Kalimat yang ditulis menggunakan kalimat pasif karena memiliki sudut pandang pertama, yaitu si
penulis.
•Grammar yang digunakan adalah simple present tense alias menggunakan verb 1.

The Importance of Reading
Thesis:
I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why do I say
so?
Argument I:
Firstly, by reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the world
such as Science, technology, sports, arts, culture, etc written in either books, magazine,
newspaper, etc.
Argument II:
Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about something
happening in any part of the world which can we see directly.
Argument III:
Another reason, reading can give us pleasure too. When we are tired, we read
books, novels, comics, newspaper or magazines on the entertainment column such as
comedy, short story, quiz, etc. To make us relaxed.
Argument IV:
Last, reading can also take us to other parts of the world. By reading a book
about Irian Jaya we may feel we’re really sitting in the jungles not at home in our
rooms.
Recommendation:
From the facts above, it’s obvious that everyone needs to read to get knowledge,
information, and also entertainment. Or in summary, we can say reading is truly
important
in our life.

19
The Importance of Health Protocols To Prevent COVID-19
COVID-19 is becoming the main problem of the world right now. I know that we may
feel tired about COVID-19.
But, to prevent the worse condition, we have to implement health protocols strictly.
Why? First, the health protocols such as wearing masks and washing the hand can
prevent the person from getting infected by COVID-19.
Another reason is practicing physical distancing can help the government to reduce
the number of cases and do tracking. Therefore, we need to obey the health protocols
and prevent the spread of COVID-19. 
 The Role of Education in Life
I personally think that having a higher education can bring more opportunities for
people to succeed in their life.
How can? First, having a higher education means possessing more knowledge and
skill. It will be useful for the people to adapt to their working environment.
Second, having a higher education can enhance the critical thinking and mature
behavior of people. So, people will struggle more in their life.
Therefore, it’s obvious that education plays a big role in life.

HORTATORY EXPOSITION.
Dalam sebuah teks hortatory exposition, ada beberapa susunan bahasa atau grammar yang sering
digunakan.
Salah satunya adalah penggunaan in on at yang umumnya untuk menerangkan tentang adverb of
place dan adverb of time. Berikut ini salah satu contohnya
Normally, students are studying in class. However, they are studying in online classes now due to
the pandemic of COVID-19. 
Jenis kalimat lain yang ada di sebuah hortatory exposition adalah direct dan indirect speech.
Berikut ini salah satu contohnya:
Direct: The researcher said, “ Air pollution can cause global warming
Indirect: The researcher said that air pollution could cause global warming. 
Dalam Hortatory Exposition juga terdapat NOUN PHRASE yang digunakan dalam kalimatnya.
Noun phrase adalah suatu klausa dependen yang terdiri dari kata benda (noun) dan kata
pengganti (pronoun) atau nomina. Berikut ini salah satu contoh penggunaan noun phrase:
The certificate of graduation is important to apply for a job. 

Sebuah hortatory exposition juga seringkali dibentuk dari kalimat adjective clause. Secara
umum, rumus dari adjective clause adalah sebagai berikut:
The man who I liked is my friend’s cousin
