HOPE for a Troubled World

Harapan bagi sebuah dunia yang sukar
There is never a challenge we find ourselves in when there is no hope in Christ.
Death will not have the last word; Jesus will!
Tidak pernah ada sebuah tantangan yang kita temui di dunia ini dimana tidak
terdapat harapan di dalam Kristus. Kematian bukanlah kata terakhir; Yesuslah
pengharapan!
One thing lifts the human spirit and keeps us going in spite of the challenges we
face: Its called hope. Hope is that intangible quality that looks beyond lifes
challenges to a better tomorrow. It leads us to live purposeful lives today
because we know a new day is coming. It anticipates the best in life even when
we are facing the worst in life. It looks beyond what is to what will be. It keeps
believing, trusting, anticipating, and expecting that out of todays darkness,
tomorrows light will shine more brightly.
Satu hal yang mengangkat semangat manusia dan yang membuat kita tetap
hidup, walaupun di tengah-tengah tantangan yang kita hadapi: Itulah harapan.

Samuel Smiles puts it this way: Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey
toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us. The Roman statesman
Pliny once said, Hope is the pillar that holds up the world. He was right.
Without hope this world is on a collision course to disaster. Without hope the
foundations of society collapse. Without hope we live our lives in silent despair.
Samuel Smiles menulisnya seperti ini: Harapan itu bagaikan matahari, yaitu,
sementara kita melakukan perjalanan meraihnya, bayang-bayang beban
terbuang dibelakang kita. Seorang negarawan bangsa Roma bernama Pliny

It seems that hope is in short supply today. The world is hope-starved, and its
getting worse each year. According to national polling data in the United States
in 1999, 85 percent of the Americans surveyed were hopeful about the future.
Ten years later, by December 2009, the number who were hopeful about their
personal future had dropped to 69 percent, and only 51 percent were hopeful
about the worlds future. By 2013 only 40 percent of those polled were optimistic

about the future of our planet. Although these surveys were taken in the United
States, similar results could be discovered throughout much of our world.
Kelihatannya hanya tersisa sedikit harapan saat ini. Dunia sedang menghadapi
bala kelaparan akan harapan, dan itu bertambah buruk setiap tahunnya.
Berdasarkan data poling nasional di Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1995, terdapat

When Hope Vanishes
It is not difficult to understand why there has been this loss of hope in our
society. Between 2003 and 2012 there have been an average of 338 catastrophic
natural disasters each year. They have left millions homeless and tens of
thousands dead. These tornadoes, cyclones, earthquakes, hurricanes, and
tsunamis have dramatically affected the world economy and cost a whopping
US$156.7 billion. Wars raging in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria have cost countless
more lives and sent millions of refugees fleeing war zones. These displaced
persons are desperately attempting to reach Europe. Tragically, too many men,
women, and children die before reaching their cherished destination.
Ketika Harapan Lenyap
Tidaklah sulit untuk memahami mengapa terjadi kehilangan harapan di tengahtengah masyarakat kita. Di antara tahun 2003 dan 2012, terjadi rata-rata 338
bencana alam setiap tahunnya. Itu menyebabkan jutaan orang kehilangan
tempat tinggal mereka, dan puluhan ribu orang meninggal dunia. Tornado, angin

Senseless terrorist attacks have struck fear into the hearts of people across our
world. Attacks in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States
have created feelings of anxiety and insecurity in the face of unimaginable
brutality. And to make things even more uncertain, the worlds economy hangs
on a slender thread. Many economists predict impending economic doom.
Russian philosopher and novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky was certainly right when he
said, To live without hope is to cease to live. What Dostoyevsky meant was
simply this: When an individual loses hope, lifes joy disappears like the setting
sun.
Para teroris yang tidak berprikemanusiaan menghujani ketakutan di dalam hati
orang-orang di seluruh dunia. Serangan di Timur Tengah, Afrika, Eropa, Asia, dan

Amerika Serikat telah menciptakan perasaan gelisah dan tidak aman oleh karena

Rediscovering Hope
In a world that seems out of control, how can we rediscover hope? In a world that
seems so uncertain, how can we hope again? Is there something certain on
which we can base our hope? Millions have found hope, assurance, and peace in
a personal knowledge of and relationship with God through studying His Word.
They have discovered a God who loves them more than they imagined; who
strengthens them to face the challenges of today and the trials of tomorrow with
incredible courage. He is the God of hope.
Menemukan Kembali Harapan
Dalam dunia yang kelihatannya diluar kendali, bagaimanakah kita dapat
menemukan kembali harapan itu? Dalam dunia yang kelihatannya penuh
ketidakpastian, bagaimana kita dapat menemukan kembali harapan itu? Adakah
sesuatu yang penuh kepastian dimana kita dapat mendasari harapan kita?
Jutaan orang telah menemukan harapan, jaminan, dan damai oleh pengenalan
dan hubungan secara pribadi dengan Allah melalui mempelajari firmanNya.

In a time of desperation the psalmist David cried out, For you are my hope, O
Lord God (Ps. 71:5). Hope began for David where it begins for all of us. It began
with the belief that there was a God in heaven who was bigger than his
problems, greater than his difficulties, and larger than any challenge he might
face. Without a knowledge of a God who cares for us, who understands our pain
and heals our hurts, and who will one day defeat all the powers of hell and usher
in a new world, we are left without hope to face lifes challenges alone.
Dalam masa keputusasaan, mazmur Daud berseru, Sebab Engkaulah
harapanku, Ya Tuhan (Mazmur 71:5). Harapan diberikan bagi Daud sebagaimana
diberikan juga kepada kita semua. Itu dimulai dengan kepercayaan bahwa ada
Allah di Surga yang lebih besar dari semua masalah-masalah kita, lebih hebat
dari semua kesulitan-kesulitan kita, dan lebih kuat dari setiap tantangan hidup

George Bernard Shaw was extremely skeptical about all religious belief. For most
of his life he considered Christianity a useless crutch. He is perhaps most

remembered as a freethinker and liberal philosopher. In one of his last

statements, he wrote, The science to which I pinned my faith is bankrupt. Its
counsels, which should have established the millennium, led, instead, directly to
the suicide of Europe. I believed them once. In their name I helped to destroy the
faith of millions of worshippers in the temples of a thousand creeds. And now
they look at me and witness the great tragedy of an atheist who has lost his
faith. Tragically, George Bernard Shaw lost not only his faith but also his hope.
He lost the sense that God was there, the sense that he was not a speck of
cosmic dust in the universe but a human being created in the image of God,
loved by God, and sustained moment by moment by God. It is this sense of
Gods presence, His unconditional love, and constant care that fills our hearts
with hope.
George Bernard Shaw dulunya sangat skeptis terhadap seluruh jenis
kepercayaan agama. Hampir seluruh hidupnya, ia berpikir bahwa Kekristenan
hanyalah sebuah penopang yang tidak berguna. Ia mungkin merupakan seorang

The Bible: Book of Hope
The Bible is a book filled with hope. Its stories tell of people like you and me.
Sometimes they were strong and conquered mightily for God. At other times
they were weak and failed miserably. But in each of these instances God was
there to give them hope to face tomorrow.
Alkitab: Buku Pengharapan
Alkitab merupakan sebuah buku yang berisikan harapan. Kisah-kisah yang
tertulis di dalamnya menceritakan orang-orang yang sama dengan anda dan
saya. Kadangkala mereka kuat dan mampu menjadi pemenang bagi Allah. Pada
beberapa waktu yang lain mereka lemah dan gagal. Namun, dalam berbagai
keadaan ini, Allah ada disana untuk memberikan mereka harapan menghadapi
hari esok.
The word hope is used more than 125 times in the Bible. The apostle Paul, who
faced so many challenging situations, used it more than 40 times. He was
beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and imprisoned yet was filled with hope. Writing to
his friends living in Rome, he declared, Now may the God of hope fill you with all
joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the

Holy Spirit (Rom. 15:13). As we place our hope in a God who is bigger than any
problem well ever face, our hearts are filled with joy and peace in believing.
The confidence that there is a God that loves us beyond what we can ever
understand fills us with hope. There is never a circumstance that we face in life
that God is not prepared to handle.
Kata harapan muncul 125 kali di dalam Alkitab. Rasul Paulus, yang
menghadapi banyak situasi penuh tantangan, menggunakan kata itu lebih dari

An Interesting Experiment
A number of years ago researchers conducted a fascinating experiment to see
the effect hope has on those undergoing hardship. Two sets of laboratory rats
were placed in separate tubs of water. The researchers left one set in the water
and found that within an hour they had all drowned. The other rats were placed
in a similar tub of water, but there was one difference. Periodically they were
lifted out of the water and returned to the same tub of water. What happened
was remarkable. The second set of rats kept swimming, and every so often were
lifted out of the water and then placed in again. They swam this way for more
than 24 hours. Why? Not because they were given a rest, but because they
suddenly had hope! Those animals somehow hoped that if they could stay afloat
just a little longer, someone would reach down and rescue them.
Eksperimen Menarik
Beberapa tahun yang lalu, para ilmuwan mengadakan sebuah eksperimen yang

If hope holds such power for unthinking rodents, how much greater should its
effect be on our lives?* We do not have to frantically try to stay afloat in an
ocean of hopelessness. When we are about ready to sink, Jesus is there. The

apostle Peter discovered a Jesus who could literally deliver him from the raging
waters.
Jika harapan memiliki kuasa yang sedemikian besarnya pada hewan-hewan yang
tidak berlogika, bagaimana besar seharusnya efek positifnya bagi hidup kita?
Kita tidak harus dengan penuh ketakutan mencoba tetap terapung di tengahtengah samudera keputusasaan. Ketika kita akan tenggelam, Yesus ada disana.

As the disciples guided their small craft across the Sea of Galilee on a stormy
night, they were surprised to see Jesus walking on the water. The apostle Peter
was even more surprised when Jesus invited him to step out of the boat and
come to Him. For a few brief moments everything went well. Then an enormous
wave obscured Peters view of Jesus. He immediately began to sink beneath the
raging waters and frantically cried out, Lord, save me (Matt. 14:30). Without
hesitationJesus reached out His strong hand and lifted His disciple out of this
hopeless situation.
Ketika para murid tengah mengemudikan perahu kecil mereka melintasi Laut
Galilea pada malam badai itu, mereka terkejut melihat Yesus berjalan di atas air.
Rasul Petrus bahkan lebih terkejut lagi ketika Yesus memintanya untuk keluar

In Christ there is hope. There is never a challenge we find ourselves in when
there is no hope in Christ. An old hymn says, Just when I need Him, Jesus is
near. . . . Just when I need Him most.
Di dalam Kristus, selalu ada harapan. Tidak pernah ada satupun tantangan hidup
yang kita hadapi tanpa harapan di dalam Kristus. Lirik dari sebuah lagu lama
berkata, Bila ku perlu, Yesus dekat... Bila ku perlu Dia.

Twice His
This Christ, who has created us and cares for us, has redeemed us. We are twice
His. When the beings He perfectly created rebelled against His will in Edens
garden, love provided a way. There was hope for Adams race. Jesus is the Lamb
slain from the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8). Heavens plan of salvation
echoed throughout the universe. Gods own Son, Jesus Christ, left heaven and
came to this rebel planet to reveal Gods love to the entire universe and satisfy
the demands of justice.
MilikNya Untuk Kedua Kalinya
Kristus yang telah menciptakan kita dan memedulikan kita, adalah Kristus yang
menebus kita. Untuk kedua kalinya, kita menjadi milikNya. Ketika manusia yang
Ia ciptakan dengan sempurna memberontak melawan kehendakNya di taman

Eden, kasih menyediakan jalan. Ada harapan bagi semua keturunan Adam. Yesus

Where Adam failed, Jesus succeeded. In His life and death He revealed the
Fathers love. He met the demands of the law and resisted Satans most vicious
temptations. He lived the perfect life we should have lived and died the death we
should have died. Although the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal
life in Jesus Christ, our Lord (Rom. 6:23). His grace, forgiveness, and mercy flow
from His heart of infinite love. Billy Graham put it well when he said, Gods
mercy and grace give me hopefor myself, and for our world. As the song says:
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness.
Ketika Adam kalah, Yesus menang. Melalui kehidupan dan kematianNya, Ia
menyatakan kasih Bapa. Ia memenuhi tuntutan hukum dan mengalahkan
kejamnya pencobaan-pencobaan setan. Ia menghidupkan kehidupan sempurna
yang seharusnya kita hidupkan dan mati dengan cara yang seharusnya kita
rasakan. Walaupun upah dosa iala maut, tetapi karunia Allah ialah hidup yang
kekal di dalam Yesus Kristus Tuhan kita (Roma 6:23). Kasih karuniaNya,
pengampunan, dan rahmat mengalir hatiNya dengan kasih yang tak

There is hope in Christ: hope that our sins are not too great to be forgiven; hope
that our temptations are not too great to be overcome; hope that our challenges
are not too great to be conquered; and hope that our tomorrows will be much
better than today. Franklin D. Roosevelt, one of the United States most popular
presidents, summed up his philosophy of life in these words: We have always
held to the hope, the belief, the conviction, that there is a better life, a better
world, beyond the horizon.
Ada harapan di dalam Kristus: harapan bahwa dosa-dosa kita tidaklah sangat
besar sehingga tidak dapat diampuni; harapan bahwa pencobaan-pencobaan
hidup tidaklah terlalu besar untuk dikalahkan; harapan bahwa tantangan hidup
kita tidaklah terlalu hebat untuk ditaklukkan; dan harapan bahwa hari esok akan
lebih baik dari hari ini. Franklin D. Roosevelt, salah satu presiden terkenal di

Hope Beyond Tomorrow
The Bible constantly points us to a better tomorrow. It holds out the promise that
one day Jesus Christ will return. Evil will be destroyed. Righteousness will reign
forever. Sin, sickness, and suffering will be no more. Disease, disaster, and death
will be vanquished. Wickedness, war, and worry will vanish away. The apostle
Paul calls this glorious event the blessed hope (Titus 2:13). He describes it this

way: For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice
of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise
first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in
the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Andthus we shall always be with the Lord
(1 Thess. 4:16, 17).
Harapan Melebihi Hari Esok
Alkitab terus menerus menunjukkan kepada kita hari esok yang lebih baik. Itu
menyatakan sebuah janji bahwa suatu hari nanti Yesus Kristus akan datang.
Kejahatan akan dibinaskan. Kebenaran akan bertakhta selama-lamanya. Dosa,
sakit, dan penderitaan tidak akan ada lagi. Penyakit, bencana, dan kematian

What a hope! Jesus Christ will
return. Death will not have the last
word; Jesus will! One day soon our
loved ones who died believing in and
living for Christ will be resurrected
from their graves to see Him face to
face. One day soon the hopes of all the
ages will be realized. Jesus Christ will
return, and we who are alive to experience
this spectacular, glorious event
will be caught up to meet Him in the
air. We will travel with Him on the
most amazing space journey ever to
the most amazing place in the universe
and live with Him throughout
all eternity.

This hope is not some fascinating

fable. It is not an idle dream. It is
based on Gods unchangeable Word
and Christs everlasting promise. Jesus
shared this eternal truth with His anxious
disciples. Let not your heart be
troubled, you believe in God, believe

also in Me. In My Fathers house are

many mansions. If it were not so, I
would have told you. I go to prepare a
place for you. And if I go and prepare
a place for you, I will come again and
receive you to Myself; that where I am,
there you may be also (John 14:1-3).

We need not worry about the

future. We do not have to let fear grip
our hearts and strangle our joy. Christ
has created us. Christ has redeemed
us. Christ cares for us. Christ sustains
us, and Christ is coming again to take
us home. That is something to be
hopeful about.
