SPLN 107:1993
Definition
The definition applies to this color standard are as the following:
3.1
Pipe is a long tube where fluid flows or where cables are laid, including gutter.
3.2
3.3
Fluid is a substance that consists of particles which move freely among them and can be flown
through the pipe.
3.4
Color Identification is a color on pipe or on storage tank that shows / symbolizes the pipe content or
storage lank content.
3.5
Basic identification color is an identification color that shows generally the kind of material that is
contained in the pipe or contained in the storage tank, such as steam, water, oil, etc.
3.6
Color Code is the color that shows function, condition, or specific usage of a specific fluid that is
contained in the pipe or contained storage tank.
3.7
Identification code is a sign or written identification or non color code that shows the condition of
fluid in the pipe or storage tank.
3.8
Decoration code is a code on the pipe or tank which is not identification color or code.
General Rules
4.1
The color application is based on the kind, condition and the use of pipe content or storage tank
content and depends on the dimension of pipe or storage tank.
4.2
Identifying the content of the pipe or the content of the storage tank can be conducted in three
ways, as follows:
-2-
SPLN 107:1993
a. Basic identification color only.
b. Basic identification color and color code.
c. a or b with identification code.
4.3
Identification color can be painted along the pipe or on the whole pipe or the whole storage
tank or on particular places. The paint application of basic identification color on the whole of
pipe surface or on the whole storage tank surface is mainly applied on the pipe or storage tank
located inside of the building.
4.4
On the parts that are not painted with identification color, those parts are allowed to be painted
with decorative color. Decorative colors are not allowed to be the same colors as identification
colors.
4.5
Coloring of identification color on the pipe must be applied on branch " T " or " Y" , on the
both sides of the valve, on the pump and other equipment, on the both sides of the wall or
partition where the pipe goes through that wall, and on places where they are considered
necessary.
The example is shown on attachment D.
4.6
5.
The valve in the fire fighting pipe must be painted with red color.

properties.

Color code
Color code which are used to show condition and or the function of the content of the pipe or tank,

Identification Code
Besides the color, sometimes it is necessary to add sign or another remark on the pipe or the storage
tank to give additional information about the content of the pipe or the content of the storage tank,
such as:
a.
b.
c.
d.
Pressure
e.
Temperature
f.
g.
h.
etc
8.
Application Method
8.1
(a) Painted along the pipe or on the whole of the pipe surface or on the whole of the storage tank
surface.
(b) Painted on the pipe or on the storage tank as a ribbon around the pipe or storage tank. The ribbon
S P L N 107:1993
width depends on the dimension of the pipe or the tank.
(c) Basic identification color ribbon is applied. This kind of ribbon usually has glue or clip so that it
is easy to be attached. The width of the ribbon depends on the dimension of pipe or the storage
tank.
The example of the use of each of (a), (b) and (c) is shown in attachment A.
8.2
8.3
(1) If basic identification color is painted along the whole pipe surface or on the whole storage tank
surface, identification code is applied on basic identification color.
(2) If basic identification color and color code is colored ribbon, identification code can be
applied on or beside basic identification color.
(b) Identification code in the form of name, number or chemical symbols must be in white or black
color so that they are contrast enough with basic identification color or decoration color on the
tank or pipe surface.
(c) Besides direct application on pipe or tank, identification code can be stated on the plate or cards
which are placed near identification color.

(d) If color code consists of three parts, the width of each part is made equal.
