Urbanisation
Urbanisation is a process in which more and more people leave the countryside to live in the
city, is one of the major causes of air pollution. This increase results in an increase in the number of
vehicles and a growth of industrial centres. This inevitably means a demand for power. The increase
in power stations to meet the demand for the increase in results in polluted air.
The rapid rate of industrialisation is also another cause of air pollution. Some industries are of
great concern because of the difficulty in controlling the emission of pollutants from them.
The emission from automobiles is also another cause for concern. The automobile emits
poisonous gases that harmful to human health. Prolonged exposure to toxic pollutants from various
sources has health effects on the elderly, infants, pregnant women and people with cardiac and
respiratory disorders. Carbon monoxide from vehicles can cause headaches, drowsiness and even
blurred vision.
Air pollution contributes to climate change and the current trend of rising temperature. If this
continues, it could lead to the melting of polar ice caps, rising sea levels and flooding in coastal areas.
Another effect of air pollution is the destruction of the ozone layer which serves as a filter for
the sun’s ultraviolet radiation entering the atmosphere. The increase in radiation can cause skin
cancer, damage to the human immune system and eye damage. Clearly, the effects of air pollution is
extensive and irreversible. It is thus our duty to do what we can to protect our Earth.
