 PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE

A) Pengertian / Understanding

Prepositional phrase merupakan sekelompok kata yang terdiri dari preposisi dan modifiers.
Prepositional phrase juga bekerja sebagai adverb, kata deskriptif, dan kata benda sehingga bisa menjadi
adverbial phrase, noun phrase or adjective phrase.prepositional phrase terdiri dari kata depan
(preposition), kata benda (noun), kata ganti (pronoun) dan bentuk kata benda dalam bentuk gerund
(ing).Adapun contoh-contoh preposisi yang paling umum adalah yaitu to, of, about, at, before, after, by,
behind, while, for, from, in, over, under, dan wi.

Prepositional phrase is a group of words consisting of prepositions and modifiers. Prepositional

phrases also work as adverbs, descriptive words, and nouns so that they can become adverbial phrases,
noun phrases or adjective phrases. Prepositional phrases consist of prepositions, nouns, pronouns and
noun forms in the gerund form (ing). The most common examples of prepositions are to, of, about, at,
before, after, by, behind, while, for, from, in, over, under, and wi

B) Fungsi / Function

• Prepositional Phrase sebagai Adverb (Prepositional Phrase as Adverb)

Fungsi prepositional phrase yaitu menerangkan kata kerja (verb) yang ada dalam kalimat. Dalam hal
ini, prepositional phrase berbentuk sebagai kata keterangan (adverb), kata keterangan tempat (adverb
of place), keterangan waktu (adverb of time), atau keterangan dari suatu Tindakan (manner). Misalnya
Time: Android was first invented in the 21st century.

• Prepositional Phrase sebagai Adjective (Prepositional Phrase as Adjective)

Fungsi prepositional phrase sebagai (adjective) atau kata sifat. Kata sifat sendiri berfungsi
menerangkan kata benda yang posisinya dapat berupa subject atau object dalam suatu kalimat. Untuk
itu, adjective ini biasanya akan beriringan dalam kata benda dalam suatu kalimat.

Contohnya: Adjective menerangkan subject: The woman in a red scarf steals my shoes.

• Prepositional Phrase dalam Kalimat Passive (Prepositional Phrase in Passive Sentence)

Prepositional phrase juga umumnya berkaitan dengan kalimat pasif. Biasanya dapat digunakannya
preposition (by) untuk menerangkan subject dalam melakukan tindakannya.

Contohnya: The cover letter was written by the job seeker.

• Prepositional Phrase sebagai pelengkap dua object dalam kalimat (Prepositional Phrase as a
complement to two objects in a sentence)

Dalam membuat sebuah kalimat, seringkali kita membutuhkan informasi sejelas-jelasnya hingga kita
perlu menggunakan keterangan kata preposisi lebih dari satu. Tujuannya ialah untuk memberikan
informasi secara lebih terperinci.

Misalnya: Before going back to office after lunch, I need to go to the bank across the street.
 C) Bentuk Prepositional Phrase

• Preposition Single

Preposition terdiri dari satu (1) kata (Prepositions consist of one (1) word)

Since,After,To ,Without,Between,With,In,Through,By,Unlike,For

• Preposition Complex

Preposition terdiri dari lebih dari satu (1) kata (Prepositions consist of more than one (1) word)

Next to,In front of,As for,In case for,On behalf of,According to,Because of,Far from,Along with,As well
as,Due to

 ADJECTIVE CLAUSE

A) Pengertian / Understanding
Adjective clause adalah clause (serangkaian kata) yang memiliki peran seperti adjective (kata sifat).
Peran adjective clause adalah untuk memberikan "informasi baru" yang "berkaitan" dengan benda yang
jadi subjek kalimat.

An adjective clause is a clause (a series of words) that has a role like an adjective. The role of an
adjective clause is to provide “new information” relating to the object that is the subject of the
sentence

C) Ciri-ciri / Characteristic
Berikut ini ciri - ciri adjective clause :

• Sama seperti clause lainnya , adjective clause memiliki subject dan verb lengkap

• Adjective ( relative ) clause selalu didahului dengan relative pronoun ( who , whom , whose , that ,
which ) atau relative adverb ( when , where , why )

• Adjective clause memberikan informasi baru tentang noun ( subject dari sebuah kalimat )

Example:

• My friend whose both parents passed away last week now lives with her grandparents . ( Teman saya
yang kedua orangtuanya meninggal minggu lalu sekarang tinggal bersama kakek dan neneknya )

D) Rumus / Formula

Relative pronoun +/- S + V relative pronoun (which, who,that)

Berfungsi menjadi subject jika tidak ada subject lain.

Relative adverb + S + V Relative adverb (when, where,why)

Berfungsi untuk menerangkan atau menjelaskan noun sebagai keterangan tempat,waktu dan juga
alasan.
 FINITE DAN NON FINITE

• Finite Verb
Finite verb, atau kata kerja finite, merupakan kata kerja utama dalam suatu kalimat yang biasanya
tanpa auxiliary verb atau verb present participle (verb-ing). Kata kerja ini biasanya hanya ada dalam
present tense atau past tense, sehingga penggunaanya cukup mudah.

A finite verb, or finite verb, is the main verb in a sentence that is usually without an auxiliary verb or a
present participle (verb-ing). These verbs usually only exist in the present tense or past tense, so their
use is quite easy.

Contoh / Example:

I go to school. (Saya pergi ke sekolah)

• Non-Finite Verb
Kebalikan dari finite verb, non-finite verb merupakan kata kerja yang dalam fungsinya dapat
berubah, bukan lagi menjadi kata kerja, melainkan menjadi kata sifat, kata benda, atau kata
keterangan. Karena fungsinya yang bisa berubah, maka non-finite verb dibedakan menjadi tiga bentuk:

The opposite of finite verbs, non-finite verbs are verbs whose function can change, no longer being
a verb, but into an adjective, noun, or adverb. Because of its changeable function, non-finite verbs are
divided into three forms.

Contoh:

She asked me to do this job. (Dia memintaku melakukan pekerjaan ini)
