If clause as Suggestion:

Conditional sentence jenis ini digunakan untuk memberikan saran tentang apa yang
seharusnya dilakukan jika menginginkan sebuah kondisi tertentu. Untuk memberikan
saran tersebut, maka kalimat pengandaian diikuti kalimat yang berfungsi memberikan
saran yaitu menggunakan kata should/ought to (seharusnya) atau had better (lebih baik).

Perhatikan kalimat yang menggunakan kata ‘if’ dan dimaksudkan untuk memberikan
saran:
 …, if you want to get better soon, you should getsome medicine and take a rest
(... , jika kamu mau membaik kondisinya, kamu seharusnya minum obat dan istirahat)

Kata ‘should’ artinya seharusnya, dan itu merupakan kata untuk memberikan saran. Kata
‘should’ dapat digantikan dengan kata lain seperti ‘ought to’ ataupun ‘had better’. Adapun
maksudnya adalah sama yaitu menyarankan. Perhatikan perubahan berikut ini!

 …, if you want to get better soon, you ought to get some medicine and take a rest
(... , jika kamu mau membaik kondisinya, kamu seharusnya minum obat dan istirahat)
 …, if you want to get better soon, you had better get some medicine and take a rest
(... , jika kamu mau membaik kondisinya, kamu lebih baik minum obat dan istirahat)

Perlu dicatat, yang membedakan sebuah saran dengan peringatan adalah keharusan. Saran
bisa dilakukan atau tidak (tergantung level), sedangkan peringatan harus dilakukan karena
hal itu merupakan suatu konsekuensi. Oleh karena itu, saran (sugesstion) menggunakan
should/ought to/had better.

Perbedaan penggunaan kata tersebut nampak pada maksud si pembicara yaitu sebagai
berikut:
 should = kuat
 ought to = lebih kuat
 had better = sangat kuat

Pattren:

IF + SIMPLE PRESENT, S + SHOULD /HAD BETTER/ OUGH TO + V1

Selanjutnya, kita juga bisa mengunakan kata ‘why don’t you’ (Mengapa kamu tidak..)
mengikuti ‘if clause’ dan maksudnya juga memberikan saran.

Jadi , kalimat di atas dapat juga diganti dengan kalimat lain yang maksudnya sama ..., if
you want to get better soon, why don’t you get some medicine and take a rest?

If Clause as Imperative:

Conditional sentence pada fungsi ini digunakan untuk menyuruh seseorang melakukan
sesuatu (perintah) jika menginginkan sebuah kondisi terjadi.

Jika kita perhatikan pada dialog di atas, maka kita akan dapat menyimpulkan bahwa kata-
kata yang digunakan setelah ‘if clause’ adalah kata perintah (ditandai dengan penggunaan
Verb-1)

 If you want not to be late, take a bath soon!

If Clause as Reminder:

Conditional sentence yang satu ini digunakan untuk mengingatkan tentang sebuah
konsekuensi yang harus dilakukan atau menyatakan keharusan/peringatan jika
menginginkan sebuah kondisi terjadi.

Jika kita perhatikan pada dialog di atas, maka kita akan dapat menyimpulkan bahwa kata-
kata yang digunakan setelah ‘if clause’ menunjukan kata keharusan (ditandai dengan
penggunaan auxiliary verb: have to/must). Have to/must memiliki makna “harus”.

 If you want to be the winner, you have to practice a lot

 If we want to pass the exam, we must study harder

Penggnaan Have to/Has to/Must:

have to digunakan untuk subjek I, you, we, dan they

If Clause/ If Conditional Type 1

First conditional sentence merupakan bentuk kalimat pengandaian yang digunakan ketika
hasil atau konsekuensi memiliki kemungkinan untuk terjadi di masa depan. Hal ini bisa
terjadi karena masih ada kondisi realistik yang masuk akal untuk kemungkinan terjadi,
maka seringkali disebut present real.

Jika kita perhatikan pada dialog di atas, maka kita akan dapat menyimpulkan bahwa kata-
kata yang digunakan setelah ‘if clause’ menunjukan kalimat simple future alias kalimat
yang akan datang dengan menggunakan modal “will (akan)”.

 I will come if I get my father’s permission

If Clause/ If Conditional Type 2

Second conditional sentences merupakan tipe kalimat pengandaian yang digunakan ketika
hasil atau konsekuensi hanya memiliki harapan terwujud walaupun kemungkinannya
sangat kecil. Jadi bisa dikatakan kalau kalimat pengandaian tipe kedua ini belum tentu
terjadi namun juga bisa menjadi kenyataan, maka sering kali disebut present unreal.

Jika kita perhatikan pada dialog di atas, maka kita akan dapat menyimpulkan bahwa kata-
kata yang digunakan setelah ‘if clause’ menunjukan kalimat past future alias kalimat yang
akan dilakukan di masa lampau dengan menggunakan modal “would/could/might”.
Penggunaan would/could/might berfungsi untuk menjelaskan seberapa besar sebuah
kondisi itu akan terjadi.

 If I were you, I would buy a new phone

 If Clause/ If Conditional Type 3

Third conditional sentence merupakan sebuah kalimat pengandaian ketika sebuah kondisi
tidak mungkin terwujud sama sekali. Hal ini bisa digambarkan karena kondisi yang sangat
mustahil atau hanya sebuah mimpi atau imajinasi, maka sering kali disebut past unreal.

Jika kita perhatikan pada dialog di atas, maka kita akan dapat menyimpulkan bahwa kata-
kata yang digunakan setelah ‘if clause’ menunjukan kalimat past future perfect suatu
kalimat yang akan sudah/telah dilakukan di masa lampau dengan menggunakan auxiliary
modal “would/could/might/should + have”.

 I wouldn’t have found her if Shawn had not helped me

 If I my mother had not called me, I would have stayed longer

Pattern:

IF + PAST PERFECT TENSE, PAST FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

IF + subject + had + verb 3 + Object, Subject + would have + Verb 1 + Object

IF + subject + had been+ non-verb, Subject + would have been + non-verb

Conditional Sentence

Secara sederhana, conditional sentence merupakan kalimat majemuk yang berisikan kondisi
mengenai sebuah pengandaian, imajinasi, atau suatu kejadian yang belum terjadi.

Dalam kalimat Bahasa Inggris, kalimat pengandaian ini diawali dengan ‘if’ sebagai penanda
bahwa kondisinya memang belum terjadi.

Bentuk conditional sentence adalah “If-clause + main clause.” Jika kamu perhatikan, if-
clause merupakan bagian dari kalimat pengandaiannya.

Sedangkan main clause, biasanya berisi konsekuensi atau akibat dari kondisi pengandaian
sebelumnya.

I. Summary
1. Conditional sentences are also known as conditional clauses or if clauses. They are used
to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain
condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled.
2. Conditional clauses can also be used to talk about consequences, or to give an opinion
about situation in the following ways.
a. If clause as suggestion is used to give advice on what to do if you want a condition
to occur. Pattern: IF + SIMPLE PRESENT, S + SHOULD /HAD BETTER/ OUGHT
TO + V1 atau IF + SIMPLE PRESENT, WHY DON’T + S + V1?
b. If clause as remainder is used to remind about a consequence that must be done if
you want a condition to occur. Pattern: IF + SIMPLE PRESENT, S + HAVE
TO/HAS TO/ MUST + V1
c. If clause as imperative is used to tell someone to do something if they want a
condition to occur. Pattern: IF + SIMPLE PRESENT, V1 + O
