When designing an infrastructure project it is important to look at the economic factors to determine whether
or not the project is sustainable.
The most common way to do this is a Life Cycle Assessment which looks at the costs and benefits of a project
over the course of its life span. How is a sustainable infrastructure project beneficial economically? While some
sustainable projects may cost more up front, the true economic benefits can be seen over the course of their
lifespan.
Example
The Miravalles Geothermal Plant is the largest geothermal plant in Costa Rica. The plant was built in 1994 and it
creates 163 MW of power. The cost to build the plant was $400 million. There is very little environmental harm
and the maintenance costs are also low. Some of the maintenance costs currently involve updating the
electronics and computers from analog to digital. The geothermal plant employs about 80 people. The remote
location of the geothermal plant has brought new opportunities for people who lived in rural areas within Costa
Rica. New communities have been created because of the power plant. Local economies have grown due to the
power plant. They now plan to build additional plants which will begin running in 2019. They plan to have a total
of 400 MW being produced by 2020.

Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method used to
measure the energy use and waste associated with
the production of a product.

A LCA is a method used to measure the
energy and waste required over the entire
lifespan of a product or service.
This assessment can be especially beneficial to
businesses that wish to decrease their carbon
footprint.
To conduct a LCA one must follow the four
phases of a LCA:
1) determine the scopes and boundaries of
the assessment
2) collect inventory of all the inputs and
outputs associated with the product being
assessed
3) determine the environmental impacts
based on the inventory collected
4) Interpret results and offer suggestions for
reducing harmful impacts.

Sound metrics and data are critical for turning the SDGs into practical tools for
problem-solving by (i) mobilizing governments, academia, civil society, and business;
(ii) providing a report card to track progress and ensure accountability; and (iii)
serving as a management tool for the transformations needed to achieve the SDGs
by 2030.
