Namun terkadang bloated stage dan active decay
digabungkan menjadi satu menjadi early decay
stage.
 Kecepatan dekomposisi mungkin berbeda bahkan di
dalam wilayah yang sama akibat perbedaan iklim secara
mikro, perbedaan topografi dan geografis
Fresh stage
Dimulai tepat pada saat kematian. Proses autolisis terjadi pada tahap ini
dan menyebabkan perubahan post mortem tahap awal, termasuk algor
mortis, rigor mortis dan livor mortis .

Pada fresh stage tidak ditemukan bau yang kuat sampai mayat telah
mencapai bloated stage. Namun segera setelah kematian, aktivitas
arthropoda dimulai dengan kedatangan lalat. Penelitian sebelumnya
menunjukkan bahwa Dipteran adalah arthropoda paling awal yang sampai

lainnya, termasuk bagian genital dan wajah termasuk mata dan lidah

✘Akumulasi produk hasil dekomposisi akan berlanjut sampai batas
dimana mayat akan collapse diikuti dengan pelepasan gas, cairan dan
garam ke sekitarnya dari semua lubang yang ada pada mayat

✘Bloating sering terjadi bersamaan dengan marbling, yaitu saat arteri

dan vena terlihat pada kulit akibat pembentukan sulf-hemoglobin akibat
reaksi bakteri di pembuluh darah. Perubahan tersebut secara bertahap
dapat berubah menjadi perubahan warna kulit yang lebih besar dengan
berbagai perubahan warna yang bervariasi seperti warna hijau, coklat
dan abu-abu sampai hitam.

 terjadi bila tulang banyak yang terlihat dari luar namun kerusakan
tulang yang ekstrem belum terjadi

Pada tahap ini, hanya sedikit jumlah kulit, tendon

dan tulang rawan yang tertinggal
Kelembapantulang yang didapat dari lingkungan sekitarnya minimal,
bau dekomposisi biasanya hilang

Beberapa spesies serangga masih ada pada tahap ini

namun kebanyakan berasal dari Coleoptera dan Acari
(tungau)
Pada keadaan normal, kepala, wajah dan
anggota gerak akan terurai lebih cepat dari
badan mayat
tapi urutan tergantung pada beberapa
variasi seperti posisi mayat dan lingkungan
 skeletal stage
Ketika jenazah mencapai skeletal stage, dekomposisi melambat
secara drastis dan prosesnya terjadi dalam rentang waktu bertahun-
tahun atau dekade

Tulang tulang tersebut akan diserang oleh mikroba pada kolagen;

pelapukan, pemutihan, eksfoliasi, retaknya tulang kortikal (diikuti oleh
terbukanya tulang trebacular), hilangnya kandungan mineral anorganik
dan invasi akar vegetasi

PMI pada tahap ini sulit untuk ditentukan walaupun ada metode untuk
menentukan PMI dengan memeriksa sisa kerangka berdasarkan
kelengkapan, fragmentasi dan artikulasi atau efek pelapukan
 Ross dan Cunningham (2011) memperkirakan bahwa dekomposisi tulang
secara sempurna memerlukan waktu antara enam sampai tiga puluh
tahun di lingkungan tropis.

Menurut (Braig & Perotti 2009; Matuszewski et al 2008)
