Prinsip Geografi
Dalam ilmu geografi, dikenal 4 prinsip utama yang digunakan sebagai dasar
untuk menjelaskan fenomena fisik dan sosial. Prinsip-prinsip tersebut
digunakan untuk memahami karakteristik dan keterkaitan fenomena tersebut
dengan permasalahan lainnya. Keempat prinsip tersebut antara lain adalah:

DASAR GEOGRAFI
 Observasi adalah kemampuan utama dalam memahami konsep geografi. Hal-hal yang

bisa terjadi antara fenomena fisik dan fenomena sosial.

Contoh : Wilayah Indonesia mengalami kekeringan

yang terjadi akibat dampak fenomena La Nina,
fenomena banjir yang terjadi akibat penebangan hutan
pada wilayah hulu, dan tsunami di suatu wilayah
setelah ada gempa laut.

Prinsip Dekskripsi
Prinsip deskripsi adalah prinsip geografi untuk
menjelasan lebih dalam mengenai gejala-gejala
yang diselidiki atau dipelajari melalui
penggambaran bentuk keterikatan antara alam
dan manusia dalam bentuk peta, kalimat,
diagram, dan grafik.
Contoh
Contoh : Peta data kerusakan
gempa di Palu, Grafik peta
tektonik di dunia, peta penggunaan
tanah untuk menganalisis wilayah
dan kesesuaian lokasi.
 4. Prinsip Kronologi
Prinsip kronologi adalah perpaduan dari 3 prinsip sebelumnya, yaitu persebaran,
interelasi, dan interaksi , serta deskripsinya dalam ruang. Tiap gejala atau fenomena
geografi dikaji dengan memadukan prinsip persebaran, iterelasi dan deskripsi. Prinsip
kronologi menunjukkan perbedaan gejala, fenomena, dan fakta antar wilayah.

Contoh
Untuk mengetahui masalah suhu udara, perlu penelitian mengenai perbedaan suhu udara
pada perdesaandan dan perkotaan,penyebab timbulnya cuaca sejuk di pedesaan, dan
pengaruh banyaknya pepohonan di desa terhadap suhu udara di wilayah perdesaan
dibanding perkotaan.

Analisis Geografi mengemukakan 3 pendekatan geografi
yang sering digunakan, yaitu sebagai berikut:

1. Pendekatan Analisis Keuangan (Spatial Approach)

Pendekatan Analisis Keuangan adalah analisis atau cara

pandang yang menekankan ruang sebagai kajiannya. Ruang
dalam perspektif geografi dapat dilihat dari
- struktur (spatial structure)
- pola (spatial pattern),
- proses (spatial process).
Contoh analisis pendekatan keruangan adalah pada saat musim hujan, sering terjadi
banjir.

Bencana tersebut sering terjadi di wilayah Jakarta. Pertanyaan yang muncul adalah
sebaga berikut.

a. Bagaimana pola keruangan sebaran banjir di Jakarta?

b. Di mana wilayah yang selalu tergenang setiap tahun?

c. Di mana wilayah yang selalu tergenang setiap 5 tahun sekali?

2. Pendekatan Analisis

Ekologi Pendekatan kelingkungan atau ekologi adalah cara penyelidikan suatu fenomena geosfer yang berada
disuatu tempat atau wilayah tertentu denganmenerapkan konsep ekosistem.

Pendekatan ini penekanannya terdapat pada keterkaitan antara fenomena geosfer tertentu dan variabel
lingkungan yang ada. Pendekatan ini tidak hanya mengaitkan hubungan antara mahkluk hidup dan
lingkungan alam saja, tetapi juga mengaitkan fenomena yang ada didalamnya, termasuk fenomena alam
beserta tindakan dan perilaku manusia yang meliputi perkembangan nilai-nilai geografis beserta kesadaran
akan lingkungan
