Asking for Attention, Clarification, Appreciation, and Opinion

Learning Targets

BLINK: In this learning material, you will learn the text organization on how to ask for attention,
clarification, appreciation and opinion.

Learning Preview

There are two types of the text organization you can learn. The first type is for a formal situation. The
second type is for a casual situation.

Type 1. Formal situation

MODAL + SUBJECT + VERB 1+ POSSESIVE PROUNOUN+ NOUN?


Some conditions under formal situation:

- Talking to parents/ teachers/ lecturers/ officers/ clients/ older people

- Talking in a meeting/ formal discussion

Text and Context:

1. Situation: Someone is showing you a direction to go to the post office, but you don’t understand it.
You want more explanation from him.

Excuse me Sir; can you repeat your explanation to me please? (Asking for clarification)

Situation: You need to meet your teacher to tell him about your project.

I’m sorry Sir; may I have your attention, please? (Asking for attention)

Situation: You are showing your poem to your teacher.

Excuse me Sir; can you give your comment on this poem, please? (Asking for an opinion)

Type 2. Casual situation

[WH questions]+ DO/DOES+ SUBJECT+ VERB 1 +[NOUN]?

Some conditions under casual situation:

- Talking to classmates/ friends/ younger people

- Chatting on Facebook/ Messenger/ We Chat

Text and Context:

1. Situation: You are introducing your niece to your best friend.

What do you think about Chika?(Asking for opinion)


2. Situation: You have a new haircut.

How do I look? (Asking for appreciation)

3. Situation: You want to meet your old friend.

Do you have time tomorrow?(Asking for attention)

What do you have time? Incorrect

Explanation:

Type 1 is for a formal situation. In case you find the subject is He/She/It please remember to always use
Verb 1 without any additional s/es since we have MODAL. You will find the example in the exercise.

Type 2 is for a casual situation. In this form you may see these symbols […..] in [WH questions]and
[NOUN]. Those symbols indicate that they are optional. Optional means you may omit them from the
text. Check the detail below!

• Using no [NOUN]See the example no 2 in type 2

• Using no [WH questions]See the example no 3 in type 2

However, please pay attention to the use of DO/DOES when using this type. You use DO if the subjects
are: I, You, We, and They. DOES is used if the subjects are: He and She. Moreover, when using DOES you
don’t need to use any additional s/es with the verb because DO and DOES are the auxiliary verbs.

Note: when asking for appreciation, it is easier to use the second type.

2. Giving and Responding Attention, Clarification, Appreciation, and Opinion

clarification, appreciation and opinion.

LEARNING MATERIAL

Learning Preview
People give clarification if the point of conversation is important. People give appreciation statement if
they receive a compliment or appreciation from someone else. Giving and responding to giving opinions
are also important to learn so that you can share what you think about something in proper ways. Look
at the following explanation:

SUBJECT + VERB 1 + POSSESIVE PROUNOUN+NOUN + [ADJECTIVE]

POSSESIVE PROUNOUN: my, your, our, his, her, its

Example:

1. Giving attention

Situation: Your friend offers to help you with your homework.

Respond: I thank you for your kind offer/ help.

2. Giving opinion

Situation:Someone is giving you an idea, and you think that his suggestion makes sense.

Respond:I think your suggestion is acceptable.

3. Giving clarification

Situation:Helen told you that your report was complete.

Respond:'She thinks my report is complete.**

4. Giving appreciation

Situation: You are with your friends and you notice that one of them has a new haircut.*8

Respond:We love your haircut.**

Explanation:
In giving your respond you should not forget to use Verb- s/es if the subject is HE/SHE/IT. For more
explanation, see the illustration below!

• She thinks my report is complete. CORRECT ANSWER

• She thinkmy report is complete.WRONG ANSWER

Note: This answer is not correct because the verb must be verb –s since the subject is ‘she’.

IMPORTANT POINTS

In writing your respond, sometimes the use of adjective is optional. It means, you may find certain verbs
such LOVE and LIKE where you don’t need an adjective.

Subject Verb Possesive Noun Pronoun

Moreover, in choosing the possessive pronoun you should be careful. Pay attention to the noun and
make sure of the referring. The subject can’t always be the measurement in determining the possessive
pronoun because it is not always referring to the subject.

Situation:

Helen told you that your report is complete.

• She thinks my report is complete. CORRECT ANSWER

• She thinkher report is complete.WRONG ANSWER

Note: The report doesn’t refer to Helen; it refers to you.

(According to the example no.3)

Situation:

You are with your friends and you notice that one of them has a new haircut.

• We love your haircut. CORRECT ANSWER


• We love our haircut. WRONG ANSWER

Note: The haircut doesn’t refer to We; it refers certain friend that having a new haircut. There is only
one friend who has it.
