GENERIC STRUCTURE DISCUSSION TEXT

Sebuah teks discussion, biasanya memiliki satu pola struktur teks yang umum sebagai berikut:

1. Issue

Paragraph pertama dari sebuah discussion text berisi pemaparan tentang isu yang akan dibahas atau
didiskusikan dalam teks tersebut.

2. Argument For or Against

Setelah menyajikan isu, penulis menjelaskan beberapa pandangan positif atau negatif terhadap isu yang
sedang dibahas. Penulis dapat terlebih dahulu memaparkan pendapat yang pro (argument for) lalu
kemudian disusul dengan pendapat yang kontra (argument against) pada paragraf berikutnya.

3. Elaboration

Penulis harus memberikan elaborasi tentang beberapa pendapat yang telah dipaparkan. Elaborasi adalah
kalimat-kalimat penjelas tentang sebuah pendapat yang disajikan. Elaborasi ini bisa saja dituliskan pada
paragraph tersendiri atau langsung dituliskan setelah pendapat pro atau kontra yang disajikan.

4. Conclusion atau Recomendation

Bagian akhir dari teks discussion biasanya berisi kesimpulan atau rekomendasi penulis terhadap isu yang
sedang didiskusikan sehingga pembaca dapat mengikuti dan setuju dengan pendapat penulis.

1. Fokus pada hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan manusia dan non-manusia.
2. Menggunakan kata-kata hubung yang bermakna berlawanan misalnya, but, however, in other

kontra.

- Menggunakan simple present tense.
- Banyak menggunakan kata opini (pendapat).
- Banyak melakukan perbandingan.
- Banyak mengungkapkan fakta akan suatu hal.
- Menggunakan modal, seperti must, should, would, may, can, etc.
- Fokus pada peserta manusia dan non-manusia generik.
- Menggunakan bahasa diskusi : according, opinion.
- Menggunakan thinking verb, seperti feel, hope, believe, think, etc.
- Menggunakan additive, contrastive, dan casual connection (menggunkan kata-kata yang
membandingkan : kata sambung yang berlawanan), seperti similiary, however, furthermore, on the
othe hand, moreover, in addition, but, nevertheless, in other side dan konsekuensinya (sebab
akibat), misalnya : so, then, etc.

3. Tujuan Discussion Text

Tujuan komunikatif discussion text adalah untuk menyajikan sebuah isu atau informasi dengan
memaparkan beberapa pendapat para pakar yang dibidangnya dan biasanya pendapat yang dipaparkan
tersebut bertentangan (pro dan kontra).

 Issue terletak di paragraf pertama yang berisi penempatan masalah atau isu yang didiskusikan atau
pemaparan tentang isu yang akan dibahas atau didiskusikan dalam tulisan tersebut.

2. Suppporting Points (Argument For or Against)

Pada bagian ini, penulis menghadirkan pendapat yang mendukung isu. Di setiap paragraf Supporting
Point terdiri dari dua komponen diantaranya adalah ide pokok paragraf dan elaborasi atau uraian dari ide
pokok paragraf tersebut. Penulis menjelaskan beberapa pandangan terhadap isu yang sedang dibahas
atau didiskusikan dengan mengambil pendapat para ahli atau juga tanpa menyebutkan siapa yang
berpendapat tetapi pendapat itu memang sudah umum diketahui. Penulis biasanya akan memaparkan
pendapat yang pro (argument for) baru disusul dengan pendapat yang kontra (argument againts) pada
paragraf berikutnya.

3. Contrasting Points (Elaboration)

Pada bagian ini, Penuis menghadirkan pendapat yang menentang isu atau permasalahan. Seperti
paragraf supporting points, Contrasing Points juga menghadirkan dua komponen pembentuk yaitu ide
pokok paragraf dan elaborasi atau uraian dari ide pokok paragraf tersebut. Sebelum mengambil sikap
dengan menentukan pendapat mana yang lebih dipilih oleh penulis, atau bahkan memiliki pendapat
sendiri, penulis harus terlebih dulu memberikan elaborasi tentang beberapa pendapat yang telah
dipaparkan.

Pada bagian ini berisi kesimpulan atau rekomendasi penulis terhadap isu yang sedang didiskusikan

Do you agree with abortion ? when some asks this to the people, there may be many "yes" and equal
number of "no", voicing their opinion over this. Abortion has always been a debatable subject amongst the
masses as people have their own arguments regarding it.

For those who are for, they think that sometimes life can be really harsh on us. In some cases, medical
emergencies make a women resort to this action because there is a possibility to be at risk, if she delivers
the child. In some other cases, some of the rape victims can be minors. They won't be mentally or
physically prepared to have the newborn baby. Giving life to such an unwanted child may cause troubles
for both mother and the child.

After all, abortions implies denying someone a well-deserved life. Just because the odds are not in our
favor, can we deprive someone the chance to live ? besides, having an abortion done also carries the risk
of not being able to become pregnant ever again in life. Abortion can also lead to serious health
complications or even a death.
