Baca dan pahami penjelasan mengenai Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense

DEFINITION OF THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The simple past tense, sometimes called the preterite, is used to talk about a
completed action in a time before now. The simple past is the basic form of
past tense in English. The time of the action can be in the recent past or the
distant past and action duration is not important.

EXAMPLES :
John Cabot sailed to America in 1498.
My father died last year.
He lived in Fiji in 1976.
We crossed the Channel yesterday.
You always use the simple past when you say when something happened, so it is
associated with certain past time expressions

• frequency: often, sometimes, always

I sometimes walked home at lunchtime.

I often brought my lunch to school.

• a definite point in time: last week, when I was a child, yesterday, six
weeks ago

We saw a good film last week.

Yesterday, I arrived in Geneva.
She finished her work atseven o'clock
I went to the theatre last night

• an indefinite point in time: the other day, ages ago, a long time ago

People lived in caves a long time ago.

She played the piano when she was a child.

Note: the word ago is a useful way of expressing the distance into the past. It is
placed after the period of time: a week ago, three years ago, a minute ago.

Present Perfect Tense

DEFINITION OF THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

The present perfect is used to indicate a link between the present and the past.
The time of the action is before now but not specified,
specified, and we are often more
interested in the result than in the action itself.

THE PRESENT PERFECT IS USED TO DESCRIBE

An action
ction or situation that started in the past and continues in the
present. I have lived in Bristol since 1984 (= and I still do.)
An action performed during a period that has not yet finished. She has
been to the cinema twice this week (= and the week isn't over yet.)
A repeated action in an unspecified period between the past and
now. We have visited Portugal several times.
An action that was completed in the very recent past, expressed by
'just'. I have just finished my work.
An action when the time is not important. He has read 'War and
Peace'. (= the result of his reading is important)
Note: When we want to give or ask details about when, where, who, we use
the simple past. Read more about choosing between the present perfect and
the simple past tenses.

FORMING THE PRESENT PERFECT

Affirmative
Subject +to have + past Participle
She has visited

Negative
Subject + to have +not + past Participle
She has not (hasn’t) visited

Interrogative
to have + subject + past participle
Has she visited?

Interrogative negative
to have not + subject + past participle
Hasn’t she visited

PRESENT PERFECT + EVER, NEVER, ALREADY, YET

EVER
The adverbs ever and never express the idea of an unidentified
time before now (Have you ever visited Berlin?)
'Ever' and 'never' are always placed before the main verb (past
participle).
Ever is used:
IN QUESTIONS
Have you ever been to England?
Has she ever met the Prime Minister?
IN NEGATIVE QUESTIONS
Haven't they ever been to Europe?
Haven't you ever eaten Chinese food?
IN NEGATIVE STATEMENTS USING THE PATTERN NOTHING+EVER OR
NOBODY+EVER
Nobody has ever said that to me before.
Nothing like this has ever happened to us.
WITH 'THE FIRST TIME'
It's the first time that I've ever eaten snails.
This is the first time I've ever been to England.

NEVER
Never means at no time before now, and is the same as not ..... ever: (I
have never visited Berlin)

BE CAREFUL! You must not use never and not together

I haven't never been to Italy.
I have never been to Italy.

ALREADY
Already refers to an action that has happened at an unspecified time
before now. It suggests that there is no need for repetition.
EXAMPLES
I've already drunk three coffees this morning. (= and you're offering me
another one!)
Don't write to John, I've already done it.

It is also used in questions:

Have you already written to John?
Has she finished her homework already?

Already can be placed before the main verb (past participle) or at the end
of the sentence:
I have already been to Tokyo.
I have been to Tokyo already.

YET
Yet is used in negative statements and questions, to mean (not) in the
period of time between before now and now, (not) up to and including
the present. Yet is usually placed at the end of the sentence.
EXAMPLES
Have you met Judy yet?
I haven't visited the Tate Gallery yet
Has he arrived yet?
They haven't eaten yet

PRESENT PERFECT WITH FOR AND SINCE

Using the present perfect, we can define a period of time before now by
considering its duration, with for + a period of time, or by considering
its starting point, with since + a point in time. FOR and SINCE can also
both be used with the past perfect. SINCE can only be used with perfect
tenses. FOR can also be used with the simple past.

FOR + A PERIOD OF TIME

for six years, for a week, for a month, for hours, for two hours
I have worked here for five years.
SINCE + A POINT IN TIME
since this morning, since last week, since yesterday
since I was a child, since Wednesday, since 2 o'clock
I have worked here since 1990.
PRESENT PERFECT WITH FOR
She has lived here for twenty years.
We have taught at this school for a long time.
Alice has been married forthree months.
They have been at the hotel for a week.
PRESENT PERFECT WITH SINCE
She has lived here since 1980.
We have taught at this school since 1965.
Alice has been married since March 2nd.
They have been at the hotel since last Tuesday.

Note the difference between gone (to) and been (to):

 Jim is on holiday. He has gone to Italy. (=he is there now or on his way
there)
 Jane is back home now. She has been to Italy. (=she has now come back)
