Teknologi internet generasi kelima relatif baru untuk Indonesia mengingat jaringan termutakhir yang
digunakan saat ini masih 4G (fourth generation). Huawei, Nokia, Samsung, hingga Verizon sejak
beberapa tahun lalu sudah mulai membicarakan pengembangan 5G hal ini meski saat itu 4G baru
digunakan.

Meski belum dapat dibuktikan, teknologi 5G dipercaya memiliki banyak keunggulan, salah satunya
kecepatan transfer data 800 gigabyte per detik (Gbps). Adapun penelitian pada 4G hanya mampu
memindahkan data dengan kecepatan 100 megabyte (MB) hingga 1 gigabyte (GB) per detik.

Dengan kecepatan 5G, pengguna internet bisa mengunduh (download) 33 film dengan kualitas high
definition (HD) dalam hitungan detik. Sementara pada ponsel 4G, pengunduhan film kualitas HD bisa
memakan waktu enam menit. Meski demikian, percobaan awal yang dilakukan Ericsson masih
menghasilkan kecepatan transfer data 5 Gbps pada jaringan frekuensi 15 Gigahertz (Ghz). 

Perbedaan lainnya, teknologi 5G memungkinkan banyak peralatan canggih terkoneksi internet secara
bersamaan di satu waktu. Ini memungkinkan dunia lebih terkoneksi lagi dengan internet. Beberapa yang
dapat terakses teknologi ini adalah peralatan rumah pintar hingga kendaraan.

Tantangan Penerapan 5G di Indonesia

Indonesia belum sepenuhnya siap menerapkan teknologi 5G saat ini. Jaringan selular cepat tersebut
memiliki tantangan untuk dikembangkan di Tanah Air. Kementerian Komunikasi dan Informatika (Kominfo)
mengatakan Indonesia belum memiliki model bisnis untuk jaringan internet 5G, khususnya pada segmen
ritel.

Menteri Kominfo Rudiantara mengatakan kecepatan jaringan 5G, yang 10 kali lipat dari jaringan 4G,
berpotensi membuat pengguna internet membayar biaya tiga kali dari sekarang. Penggunaan 5G malah
cocok bagi usaha atau korporasi lantaran biaya yang dapat ditanggung lebih besar. "Kalau kita diminta
bayar tiga kali lipat dari biaya saat ini, pasti mikir,” kata dia beberapa waktu lalu.

Adapun, beberapa operator telekomunikasi yang sudah melakukan uji coba jaringan 5G di Indonesia
adalah Telkomsel, XL, Indosat, dan Tri. Sementara, Smartfren akan melakukan uji coba jaringan tersebut
pada Juni 2019 mendatang.

Indonesia is not fully ready to implement 5G technology at this time. This fast cellular network has
challenges to be developed in the country. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo)
said that Indonesia does not yet have a business model for the 5G internet network, especially in the
retail segment.

Kominfo Minister Rudiantara said the 5G network speed, which is 10 times that of the 4G network,
has the potential to make internet users pay three times what it is today. The use of 5G is even suitable
for businesses or corporations because the costs that can be borne are greater. "If we are asked to pay
three times the current cost, we will think about it," he said some time ago.
