Item-item dalam satu seri: Harry needed to pick a Siamese, tortoiseshell, calico, or a tabby cat.
Gabungan subjek: Sheila and Harry both enjoyed playing with all the kittens.
Gabungan verb: The kittens jumped around and played with all the people who came to greet them.
Perhatikan bahwa tidak ada koma sebelum conjunction dalam gabungan verb karena kedua kata
kerja tersebut memiliki subjek yang sama – “The kittens.” Gaya kalimat yang menggunakan
banyak coordinating conjunction disebut polysyndeton.
Sebagai contoh: “There’s a Labrador and a poodle and a German shepherd and a Chihuahua!”
PENGGUNAAN SUB-ORDINATE CLAUSES (ANAK KALIMAT)
Klausa yang tidak bisa berdiri sendiri sebagai kalimat sempurna adalah klausa dependen atau anak
kalimat. Saat kita menyambungkan klausa dependen ke sebuah kalimat, Anda akan menggunakan
subordinating conjunction, seperti berikut ini:
Dengan subordinating conjunction: It closed its eyes and purred at me when I picked up the tabby
cat.
Versi kedua dari kalimat tersebut: When I picked up the tabby cat, it closed its eyes and purred at
me.
Kita tidak bisa membuat dua klausa dalam kalimat ini menjadi dua kalimat saat ditulis. “When I
picked up the tabby cat,” akan menjadi potongan kalimat yang tidak lengkap jika dibaca sendiri. Jadi,
tergantung pada klausa utama kalimat, klausa independen, yang bisa berdiri sendiri: “It closed its
eyes and purred at me.”
Subordinating conjunction dapat diklasifikasikan ke dalam beberapa kelompok:
Casuality (sebab): because, since, as
Time (waktu): when, as soon as, before, after, while, by the time
Contrast (pertentangan): though, although, even though, while, whereas, rather than
Condition (kondisi): if, unless, even if, only if, in case, provided that, so that, whether.
Berikut ini adalah contoh subordinate conjunction:

whereas
wherever

PAIRED CONJUNCTION (kata sambung berpasangan)
Correlative conjunctions sering kali merupakan kata sambung yang mempunyai pasangan kata.
Contohnya seperti:
either…or,
neither…nor,
not only…but also,
both…and,
not…nor,
as…as.
Koma sebelum conjunction kedua tergantung pada apakah klausa itu independen atau tidak.
Bukan dua klausa independen:
Preposisi adalah salah satu bagian dasar dari Parts of Speech dan merupakan kata yang paling
sering digunakan saat menyusun kalimat. Preposisi juga anggota dari kelas kata tertutup (closed
class), artinya sangat jarang bagi preposisi baru untuk muncul dalam bahasa. Hanya ada sekitar 100
kata dalam bahasa Inggris.
Preposisi seringkali merujuk pada lokasi (“under the table“), arah (“to the south“), atau waktu
(“past midnight“). Preposisi juga dapat digunakan untuk menyampaikan hubungan lain: agensi (by),
perbandingan (like, as . . . as), kepemilikan (of), tujuan (for), atau sumber (from, out of).
SIMPLE PREPOSITION
Preposisi sederhana – preposisi yang terdiri dari hanya satu kata. Pendek dan sangat umum
seperti: as, at, by, for, dan of. Selain itu, ada juga preposisi seperti: about, between, into, like, onto, since,
than, through, with, within, dan without untuk menunjukkan hubungan antar kata.
Kadang-kadang preposition membingungkan. Misalnya, sulit untuk mengetahui kapan kita harus
menggunakan in, into, on, atau at. Karena artinya sangat mirip. Jadi, kita dituntut untuk melihat
konteks kalimatnya.
Banyak juga preposisi yang saling berkebalikan.
Misalnya, before & after, inside & outside, off & on, over & under, juga up & down.
Beberapa preposisi mengungkapkan hubungan ruang/tempat (space). Contoh-nya: aboard, across,
amid, among, around, atop, behind, beneath, beside, beyond, near, over, round, dan upon.
Preposisi juga dapat merujuk pada waktu. Di antara yang paling umum adalah after, before, during,
till, dan until.
Ada juga preposisi lain yang juga unik atau dapat digunakan dalam berbagai kepentingan. Beberapa
di antaranya termasuk about, against, along, despite, regarding, throughout, toward, dan unlike.
COMPLEX PREPOSITION
Complex preposition – preposisi kompleks – adalah preposisi yang terdiri dari lebih dari 1 kata (bisa 2,
3, bahkan 4). Dalam kategori ini, contohnya frasa seperti in addition to, such as, thanks to, atau in
between.
MENGENALI PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE
Preposisi biasanya tidak berdiri sendiri. Grup kata dengan preposisi di head diikuti oleh objek
(atau complement) disebut frasa preposisi (prepositional phrase). Objek preposisi (object of preposition)
biasanya berupa noun (kata benda) atau pronoun (kata ganti):
Ferguso put the horse before the cart.
– Ferguso menaruh kudanya di depan kereta
Frasa preposisi bisa memberi arti baru pada kata benda dan kata kerja dalam kalimat. Biasanya,
memberi tahu kita di mana, kapan, atau bagaimana.
Sebuah prepositional phrase dapat berperan sebagai kata sifat dan memodifikasi kata benda, seperti:
The student in the back row began to snore loudly.
– Murid di baris belakang mulai mendengkur dengan keras
Frasa “in the back row” menerangkan noun “The student”.
Selain itu, juga dapat berfungsi sebagai kata keterangan dan memodifikasi kata kerja:
PREPOSITION VS CONJUNCTION
Hanya karena telah melihat salah satu preposisi yang telah saya sebutkan tadi, tidak berarti bahwa
preposisi tersebut hanya digunakan sebagai preposisi. Hal ini tergantung situasi, yang merupakan
salah satu hal yang sedikit rumit dari bahasa Inggris, jadi jangan tertipu.
Beberapa preposisi tertentu (seperti: after, as, before, since, until) berfungsi sebagai conjunction ketika
mereka diikuti oleh klausa/kalimat anak:
You better get out of town before sundown.
Before disini sebagai preposisi, karena setelah before ada noun, bukan kalimat lagi.
Many people run out of ideas long before they run out of words.
Before disini adalah conjunction / kata hubung, karena setelah before ada kalimat “they run out of
words.”
Beberapa preposisi (seperti: about, across, around, before, down, in, on, out, dan up) juga bisa
menjadi adverb (kata keterangan).
Disebut prepositional adverb atau adverbial particle.
Beth walked up the driveway.
Preposisi “up” diikuti oleh objek noun – “the driveway.”
Beth looked up.
Prepositional adverb “up” menerangkan verb “looked.”
