ABSTRACT
Historically, Islamic education in the Netherlands has been seen since
the 1980s. There are three types of Islamic education: mosque education, Islamic
religious education in public schools, and Islamic elementary schools. The
Muslim community managed to establish their first Islamic primary schools in the
late 1980s in Rotterdam and Utrecht. The schools are fully funded by the state.
The Dutch constitution, which guarantees freedom of education, makes it possible
for Muslims in this country to establish their own schools based on Islamic culture
and religion. Islam is one of the various religions in the Netherlands. There are
about one million Muslims in the Netherlands. Most of them are descendants of
immigrants. The largest Muslims there are of Turkish descent followed by
Morocco and then Tunisia, Algeria and Suriname. They are descendants of
immigrant workers in the 1960s, so most of them and their descendants are Dutch
citizens. Of course there are native Dutch people who embraced Islam but most of
them convert for reasons of marriage.
