PREFACE

English basic skills atau kemampuan dasar bahasa Inggris ( Speaking, reading, wariting
dan listening) dan mempunyai bekal konsep tentang English component atau unsur-unsur
yang ada dalam bahasa inggris (Vocabulary, Grammar/structure, dan pronounciation).
Hanya saja mungkin pengetahuan-pengetahuan tentang kaidah-kaidah Bahasa Inggris
kebutuhan, yaitu melalui penggunaan English for Specific Purpose (ESP) yaitu bahasa
Inggris untuk Teknik Informatika.

EXAMPLE

The graph below shows the number of university graduates in Canada from 1992 to 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant.

SAMPLE WRITING TASK 1

Graduate numbers rose during the 15 years and reached their highest levels in 2007, but there
were always more female than male graduates. In 1992, the difference was less marked, with just
over 70,000 males and about 100,000 females. However, by 2007 there had been more
significant growth in female numbers. That year, they rose to 147,000, compared to just 95,000
males.
Thus the gap between the number of male and female graduates had widened. A more detailed
look at the graph reveals that the overall growth in numbers was not always steady. Between
1992 and 1995, there was a slight increase. That was followed by a period of about five years,
when numbers fell, then flattened out at just over 70,000 for men and 100,000 for women. After
2000, however, graduate numbers saw their strongest growth rate, and this was well above the
increases that had been seen in the early 1990s. Clearly, there were similar trends for male and
female graduates over this period, but the number of women graduating increased at a higher rate
than the number of men.
Task 1

The bar graph shows the global sales (in billions of dollars) of different
types of digital games between 2000 and 2006. Write a report for a

information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

REPORT TEXT

Report text is a text that describes something in general. Every text has a communicative purpose.
Communicative purpose of report text is to present information about something in general.

Report text has two generic structures. The first is general classification it is usually in the first
paragraph of the text. This part usually introduces the topic of the report or tells what
phenomenon under discussion is. It can be a short description of the subject or it can be
definitions from the subject that is described. The second is, description. In this part, we usually
will describe the details of the topic or subject such as physical appearance, parts, qualities,
habits or behaviour. Every paragraph in the part of description usually gives us information
about one feature of the subject

Task 1
Modern Technology

Modern technology is changing the way we live our lives. Clever gadgets make everyday
activities easier and enable people to use their time effectively. But what impact will this change
have in the future and is it really a positive thing? People are busier than ever before.
Technological advances mean that things are often possible with the touch of a button. A
hundred years ago, however, things were very different. Everyday jobs, like doing the laundry,
would take a whole day, and the telephone was a new invention! Nowadays, almost every
household has a washing machine and a dishwasher, and there are more than 70 million mobile
phones in use in the United Kingdom alone.
Research shows that around 28% of children in the UK are overweight or obese. Some people
are concerned that this is because young people spend too much time online and not enough time
socialising with their friends and playing outside. In the past, nearly all children walked to school
because their parents didn‘t have a car. They didn‘t have all the luxuries that many children have
now, so they used their imaginations and played outdoors in the fresh air.

Years ago, when people wanted to stay in touch with their friends and family, they wrote letters.
These days, however, E-mail communication and social networking sites, such as Facebook,
allow instant, free international communication.

Online banking and shopping make essential activities possible from the comfort of our own
homes. But what effect will this have on town centres and shops? In some towns and cities,
many shops are now empty, and a lot of people think this is because more and more people
choose to use the Internet for shopping.

There are many benefits of using technology but we need to be responsible in the choices we
make. Modern equipment is often very expensive and does not last a long time. It is important to
consider how much we really need these things and the impact they have on our health, the
environment and society.

Match paragraphs a – e to the topic sentences below.

2. The impact of modern technology on everyday life over the past century.
3. How modern technology has changed communication.

5. Modern technology in relation to shopping and retail.

job interview
 CV and Application Letter
 Job Interview

WHAT is cv?

A CV (short for the Latin phrase curriculum vitae, which means ―course of life‖) is a detailed
document highlighting your professional and academic history. CVs typically include
information like work experience, achievements and awards, scholarships or grants you‘ve
earned, coursework, research projects and publications of your work.

CV vs. Resume

A CV and resume are similar in that they‘re both documents that summarize your professional
history, education, skills and achievements. They‘re also both documents you might provide an
employer for consideration for an open position.

It is important to note that in the United States and most of Europe, resumes and CVs are not
interchangeable. A resume is a shorter-form document that provides a concise overview of your
previous roles, skills and details about your education. (The French word résumé translates to
―abstract‖ or ―summary.‖) A CV, on the other hand, is typically a longer, more detailed
document focused largely on academic coursework and research.

How to write a CV

While your CV should be specific to your background and tailor to the job for which you're
applying, there are several steps you can take to ensure you write an effective CV. Most CVs
include the following information:

 Contact information
 Academic history
 Professional experience
 Qualifications and skills
 Awards and honors
 Publications
 Professional associations
 Grants and fellowships
 Licenses and certificates
 Volunteer work
 Personal information (optional)
 Hobbies and interests (optional)
What is a job application letter?

An application letter is a standalone document you submit to a potential employer to express

your interest in an open position. The job application letter explains who you are as a
professional and an individual. The letter should highlight your achievements and skills, helping
to get the attention of the hiring manager or recruiter responsible for reviewing applications.

A job application letter can impress a potential employer and set you apart from other applicants.
In your letter, you may also want to show your familiarity with the company to which you‘re
applying. You can talk about how your professional goals and aspirations align with the
company‘s goals. It‘s important to use your job application letter to showcase aspects of your
personality.

How to write an application letter

When writing an application letter for a job, follow these steps to make sure you include
information about yourself and your professional experience that will appeal to a hiring manager:

1. Review information about the company and position

2. Use a professional format
3. Create the heading
4. Address the letter to the hiring manager
5. Open the letter by describing your interest
6. Outline your experience and qualifications
7. Include aspects of your personality
8. Express appreciation
9. Close the letter

English Proficiency Test

 Pretest

 Post test

what are the differences between toefl

test and toeic test?

The TOEIC® tests measure proficiency in English relevant to the global workplace whereas the
TOEFL® tests measure the academic communication skills in English. Both tests aim to measure
the level of English proficiency for non-native English speakers.

TOEFL ITP ("ITP" stands for "Institutional Testing Program") tests are paper-based and use
academic content to evaluate the English-language proficiency of non-native English speakers.
The tests use new and previously administered TOEFL test questions and are used for placement,
progress, evaluation, exit testing and other situations. The test scores, format and content of the
test matches the "TOEFL PBT", with the exception of not including the TWE (Test of Written
Expression).

Unlike the TOEFL iBT and PBT tests, TOEFL ITP tests are administered by the institution and
for internal use. It should not replace the need for the TOEFL iBT test, which is administered
securely and includes Speaking and Writing components.

Answer all questions about the information in a passage on the basis of what is stated or implied
in that passage.

Look at the following examples before going on to the practice passage and questions.

Examples 1–2
The railroad was not the first institution to impose

regularity on society, or to draw attention to the

importance of precise timekeeping. For as long as

merchants have set out their wares at daybreak and

communal festivities have been celebrated, people have

been in rough agreement with their neighbors as to the

time of day. The value of this tradition is today more

apparent than ever. Were it not for public acceptance of

a single yardstick of time, social life would be unbearably

chaotic: the massive daily transfers of goods, services,

and information would proceed in fits and starts; the

very fabric of modern society would begin to unravel.

1. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. In modern society we must make more time for our neighbors.
B. The traditions of society are timeless.
C. An accepted way of measuring time is essential for the smooth functioning of society.
D. Society judges people by the times at which they conduct certain activities.

The main idea of the passage is that societies need to agree about how time is measured in order
to function smoothly. Therefore, you should choose answer C.

2. In line 7, the phrase "this tradition" refers to

A. the practice of starting the business day at dawn
B. friendly relations between neighbors
C. the railroad's reliance on time schedules
D. people's agreement on the measurement of time

The phrase "this tradition" refers to the preceding clause, "people have been in rough agreement
with their neighbors as to the time of day." Therefore, you should choose answer D.

Practice Questions 1–10

The Alaska pipeline starts at the frozen edge of the Arctic Ocean. It stretches southward
across the largest and northernmost state in the United States, ending at a remote ice-free
seaport village nearly 800 miles from where it begins. It is massive in size and extremely
complicated to operate. The steel pipe crosses windswept plains and endless miles of delicate
tundra that tops the frozen ground. It weaves through crooked canyons, climbs sheer
mountains, plunges over rocky crags, makes its way through thick forests, and passes over or
under hundreds of rivers and streams. The pipe is 4 feet in diameter, and up to 2 million
barrels (or 84 million gallons) of crude oil can be pumped through it daily.

Resting on H-shaped steel racks called "bents," long sections of the pipeline follow a zigzag
course high above the frozen earth. Other long sections drop out of sight beneath spongy or
rocky ground and return to the surface later on. The pattern of the pipeline's up-and- down
route is determined by the often harsh demands of the arctic and subarctic climate, the
tortuous lay of the land, and the varied compositions of soil, rock, or permafrost
(permanently frozen ground). A little more than half of the pipeline is elevated above the
ground. The remainder is buried anywhere from 3 to 12 feet, depending largely upon the type
of terrain and the properties of the soil.

One of the largest in the world, the pipeline cost approximately $8 billion and is by far the
biggest and most expensive construction project ever undertaken by private industry. In fact,
no single business could raise that much money, so eight major oil companies formed a
consortium in order to share the costs. Each company controlled oil rights to particular shares
of land in the oil fields and paid into the pipeline-construction fund according to the size of
its holdings. Today, despite enormous problems of climate, supply shortages, equipment
breakdowns, labor disagreements, treacherous terrain, a certain amount of mismanagement,
and even theft, the Alaska pipeline has been completed and is operating.
