kesejahteraan mental remaja.

Abstract

Background: Mental welfare problems in adolescents have become a major concern

in this modern era. Depression is one of the main problems that affects the mental
well-being of teenagers. Physical activity has been identified as a factor that may play
a role in preventing depression in the adolescent population. However, a clear link
between physical activity and depression still requires more in-depth research for a
more holistic understanding.

Method: This research used a cross-sectional approach, which was carried out in
senior high schools (SMA) in the Manado region of Indonesia in January 2023. This
research used the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to measure
physical activity levels and the Child Depression Inventory (CDI) to measure the
level of depression.

Results: A total of 471 respondents with a median (IQR) age of 16.8(16.2-17.7) were
included in the study where the proportions of mild to moderate and severe
depression categories were 136 (28.9%), 119 (25.3%) and 63 (13.4%) respectively.
The results of the chi square analysis showed that there was a significant relationship
between the level of physical activity and the incidence of depression in adolescents
with a p value of 0.018.

Conclusion: There is a relationship between physical activity and the incidence of

depression in adolescents. These findings emphasize the importance of paying
attention to the role of physical activity in preventing and reducing the risk of
depression. Therefore, the need for prevention strategies that emphasize the
importance of physical activity in adolescent health programs needs to be considered.
Further research and development of more targeted interventions are needed to better
understand and optimize the relationship between physical activity and adolescent
mental well-being.
