DEFINISI GEOLOGI SEJARAH

Ilmu yang mempelajari tentang konsep perkembangan bumi

(meliputi ruang dan waktu): proses terbentuknya, kondisi dan
perkembangan tektonik, serta kaitannya terhadap kemunculan
dan penyebaran organisme di dunia pada umumnya dan
Indonesia pada khususnya.
Satu disiplin ilmu yang menggunakan prinsip serta teknik
geologi untuk merekonstruksi dan memahami sejarah geologi
dari bumi. Ilmu ini juga fokus pada evolusi organisme selama
periode waktu yang berbeda dalam skala waktu geologi. Serta
membahas teknik radiometri untuk menentukan umur absolut
suatu batuan maupun fosil.

The ruins of an older world are visible in the present structure of our
planet, and the strata which now compose our continents have been
once beneath the sea, and were formed out of the waste of pre-existing
continents. The same forces are still destroying, by chemical
decomposition or mechanical violence, even the hardest rocks, and
transporting these materials to the sea, where they are spread out, and

periods, we acquire a more perfect knowledge of its present condition, and
more comprehensive views concerning the laws now governing its animate

matter resting upon it was fluid, and, therefore, at the time when the lower stratum was being
formed, none of the upper strata existed";

the principle of original horizontality: "Strata either perpendicular to the horizon or inclined to
the horizon were at one time parallel to the horizon";

the principle of lateral continuity: "Material forming any stratum were continuous over the
surface of the Earth unless some other solid bodies stood in the way";

the principle of cross-cutting relationships: "If a body or discontinuity cuts across a stratum, it
must have formed after that stratum."

WILLIAM STRATA SMITH

The principle of faunal succession, is based on the observation that sedimentary

rock strata contain fossilized flora and fauna, and that these fossils succeed each
other vertically in a specific, reliable order that can be identified over wide
horizontal distances.

This principle, is of great importance in determining the relative age of rocks and
strata. The fossil content of rocks together with the law of superposition helps to
determine the time sequence in which sedimentary rocks were laid down.
