GUIDANCE FOR CORROSION MANAGEMENT IN
31 OIL AND GAS PROCESSING AND PRODUCTION
SCOPE OF APPLICATION

• 1. Management system scope

• Corrosion management is defined as the part of the overall management system that develops,
implements, reviews and maintains the corrosion management policy and strategy. The
corrosion policy provides a structured framework for identification of risks associated
with corrosion, and the development and operation of suitable risk control
measures.
• 2. Production facilities scope
• The document is intended to apply to the following facilities:
• — offshore installations (including process plant, utilities and supporting structures);
• — pipelines and subsea gathering, manifolds and processing systems, and
• — onshore plant for reception, separation and stabilisation.

CORROSION MANAGEMENT by BW/AS

CONT’D

• 3. Deterioration processes scope

• Corrosion management covers the management of threats to technical integrity arising from
mechanisms of material deterioration and failure, including but not limited to:
• — corrosion processes – general, localised and galvanic;
• — environmental cracking – stress corrosion, hydrogen induced, sulphide stress cracking,
corrosion fatigue, etc.;
• — erosion, erosion corrosion, cavitation assisted corrosion and other flow related
degradation mechanisms, and
• — mechanical damage – vibration induced fatigue, brittle fracture.

Corrosion costs in infrastructure

CORROSION MANAGEMENT by BW/AS

45 SUMMARY
• The infrastructure of the nation is essential to the quality of life, industrial
productivity, international competitiveness, and security
• Each component of the national infrastructure, such as highways, airports,
water supply, waste treatment, energy supply, and power generation,
represents a complex system and large investments.
• Corrosion is damage that results from the interaction of structures and
materials with their environment, corrosion can result in catastrophic
failures, with loss of life and disruption of essential services
• The principal challenges in realizing the significant savings that result from
improved corrosion control include an unfortunate lack of awareness of
corrosion costs by the public and policymakers and a widely held
misconception that nothing can be done about corrosion.
CORROSION MANAGEMENT by BW/AS 18/09/2011

46 CONT’D
 This invisible infrastructure includes items such as water mains, gas and oil
pipelines, power plants, and telecommunications systems
 The preservation and the extension of the useful life of an existing infrastructure is
a great challenge because of the long service lives that are desired. The operating
life of critical components of the infrastructure is often extended well beyond the
original design service life.
 While the focus may recently have shifted from building a new infrastructure to
the preservation and extended use of the existing infrastructure, the necessary
changes in public attitudes, adjustments to the allocation of resources, changes to
the industrial, government, and academic institutions, and revisions to policies,
practices, and procedures.
CORROSION MANAGEMENT by BW/AS 18/09/2011

47
CORROSION PREVENTION STRATEGIES

• Increase awareness of significant corrosion costs and potential cost savings

• Change the misconception that nothing can be done about corrosion
• Change policies, regulations, standards, and management practices to increase corrosion cost
savings through sound corrosion management
• Improve education and training of staff in the recognition of corrosion control
• Implement advanced design practices for better corrosion management
• Develop advanced life prediction and performance assessment methods
• Improve corrosion technology through research, development, and implementation
